What do you think are the basic essential pieces every woman should have?

pearl strand in 18 inches
diamond studs in whatever size you're comfortable for everyday
silver bracelet for everyday (judith ripka, tiffanys)
gold necklace with pendant (18 inches)
pearl studs
gorgeous dangly earrings for formal dress
right hand ring
wedding band/solitaire (if married)

A pearl neclace for sure is a must have
A wedding ring if married.

The rest is so subjective -

I don't have an engagement ring - never wanted one, I love the simple look of a plain band.

I can't stand wearing a watch so I don't, but I love having lots of bracelets and neclaces.

I think this is as subjective as the wardrobe basics people say everyone should own. A person's taste and lifestyle have, or should have, a bigger influence on their choices than tradition. Why should a woman who hates stud earrings own both diamond and pearl stud earrings? Some people choose flamboyant pieces or ethnic pieces to express their individuality, and I LOVE people like that. I remember them and their jewelry far more than the "classics".

So if a person is comfortable playing it safe and being completely classic, then the suggestions so far are perfect. But it isn't the women who wear the pearl necklaces and diamond solitaires who I remember. I'd much rather see someone in unique and memorable pieces that express who they are instead of who they think they are supposed to be.

Your right - I take back what I said about the pearl necklace! But I will stand by needing a wedding ring if married - unless the hubby doesn't mind you going around w/o one ;)

I agree with what you're saying, but didn't the OP ask what OUR opinion was of what we considered to be the BASIC jewelry pieces? so yes, it's subjective, but the OP asked for our subjective opinions.

The world is a much more interesting place with people who step outside of the norm. I don't think anyone was suggesting that we all dress like clones and buy pearl studs even if we hate them. :smile1: I think it's generally understood that "basic wardrobe" threads like this -- whether it's clothes or jewelry or bags -- contain subjective and personal responses. Maybe 9 times out of 10, the responses seem pretty basic and conventional, but that's probably because 9 out of 10 people are pretty basic in their style! You have a good point though - I'm sure that people here would *love* to hear from a less traditional dresser about their jewelry wardrobe basics! I know I would!

Like you said, everything is subjective and personal to every person! :smile1:

I looked at the thread as asking about basic items that we think are good to have. For me, my list was what I would want in MY own basic jewelry box if I could only have a few things or would recommend to someone starting out buying items. I think unique or different things are great to have though.

Watch - I'd always go for a mans one myself...:p
Bracelet - something plain/simple
Pendant/Necklace - one that can be worn everyday
Stud earrings - I'm rather partial to gold knot twists, but wouldn't be averse to diamonds.:D
