What do you think are the basic essential pieces every woman should have?

A ring (if not married) with or without stones.
A bracelet/bangle
Studs (diamonds or pearls)
Watch

I always have these pieces on each day. They match everything but are not overbearing pieces.

If I were suggesting some pieces of jewelry to a woman who didn't have any jewelry, but was interested in building a jewelry wardrobe, I would encourage her to invest in:
a pair of hoop earrings in her favorite metal
a right-hand ring
a visually interesting bracelet
a necklace (chain and pendant)
and a good quality watch

At the risk of quoting Women of a Certain Age (the list my Mother/GM/Cotillion Organizer gave me)

Diamond cocktail ring
Diamond studs
Diamond solitare necklace

Gold hoops
Gold chain necklace

Pearl Necklace
Pearl studs

Elegant watch
Fun watch

And then I would add:
A fun pair of earrings
An unusual or fun necklace (can be pendant or statement piece)

I think this stands the test of time! I'd have said the exact same thing -- maybe adding some sterling or white gold pieces and a couple of cute bracelets -- maybe troll bead, tiffany, or david yurman.

But that's exactly how I started collecting my more expensive/classic pieces...start with diamonds, pearls, a nice watch, and gold...I've been wearing them consistently for years!

1. A nice everyday watch and a nice evening watch
2. Diamond stud earrings
3. A strand of pearls
4. A pendant necklace that has history and sentimental meaning behind it
5. A pearl ring
6. A diamond ring that has been handed down through the generations
7. A blinged out bracelet from a lover!

Have to say that I agree that sentimental meaning makes a big difference. I have a diamond bracelet given during a lovely holiday, bought together with OH and I love it. I also have a diamond eternity ring which was given to me in shall we say, a less happy situation, and it always reminds me of that situation when I wear it. Jewellery is not always about how much something costs or whether it is a "classic" but the meaning and love behind it. I have diamond studs, diamond solitaire and eternity rings and a diamond tiffanys bracelet as my "everyday" wear but own very little other jewellery as I am happy with the meaning behind what I have. A "collection" can happen by chance as well as a determination to own certain key pieces, and it often means more when pieces are bought to tie in with certain times such as birth of a child etc. Just my opinion....

These are great points. The pieces of jewelry I currently own that mean the most to me and that I love the most are the ones with sentimental value and a meaning behind them.

White pearl studs, black pearl studs, diamond studs, hoops, classic white pearl necklace, diamond pendant necklace, pearl solitaire necklace, classic watch. Add a cross or religious symbol necklace for those who would like one!

For me they would have to be:

- diamond stud earrings
- pearl stud earrings
- small gold hoop earrings
- white gold or platinum all around diamond ring (like an eternity band)
- a pearl necklace
- 2 watches - one with a golden tone and one with a silver tone

Oh, I love lists! I love reading everyone's thoughts.

For myself, I can't list things I think every woman should have, jewellery for me is too much a matter of personal taste and lifestyle. I am also discovering that some things cannot be forced no matter how stylish it seems - I've been looking for a pendant for years (yes, years) and have had no success. I am simply not a necklace or pendant person. I am instead wearing Hermes twillys with the Medor slides as a neck-adornment. It's working so far.

I can say that I consider jewellery to be a long-term series of acquisitions to celebrate achievements or stages in life. Therefore, I have some pieces already that I love very much, but there are also pieces that I don't own yet, but plan to someday and these are very much thought out and defined. As such, these pieces are my essentials.

That I own already:

1. Pearl stud earrings: 10mm South Seas. When I want to feel crisp and organised (*usually on mornings when I'm anything but)
2. Diamond earrings: baguette huggies/hoop clips in white gold - my 23rd birthday present from my mother and absolutely cherished.
3. Diamond studs: Canturi cubism studs in white gold - I looked at classic solitaire studs and just didn't feel them when I tried them on. The cubism studs are absolutely gorgeous and a testament to the design skills of Stefano Canturi. I almost feel patriotic when I wear them!
4. Gold earrings: Cartier baby trinity earrings, little knots of yellow, white and rose gold with a small diamond. The knot design is really beautiful and very understated so good for everyday. And for my first trip to Paris, what better souvenir than something from Cartier?
5. Drop earrings: I have two pairs that I adore, one art deco diamond design with a pink sapphire drop and a classic onyx long drop with little diamonds to add some sparkle - nothing works for me like drop earrings at night.
6. Cocktail ring: a large really deep blue topaz left to me by my grandmother, reset in white gold. No diamonds, it's simple and elegant and I'm honestly too young to have a giant blinged out ring on my finger - I'll get there eventually!
7. Bracelet: white gold design by Fope purchased in Florence. All the girls in my family have a variation of this bracelet design and I wear mine every day.
8. Watch: Cartier tank f. ladies size, two tone. Complements the rest of my jewellery perfectly, not to mention a classic piece in its own right.
9. Ring: white gold channel set baguette diamonds, sits on the middle finger of my left hand. My gift to myself on admission to the Supreme Court roll.

Essentials to be acquired:

1. Rolex watch: I need something that can take quite a beating and be handed down to the next generation - I am not looking at the white gold and diamond pearlmaster rolexes here. Something like the AirKing, stainless steel, waterproof and up for a challenge.
2. Pearl necklace: I will beat the necklace demon and wear one eventually - a two strand white south sea 8-10mm necklace. I would get it made at Canturi - when I'm in my forties, I like to think.
3. Diamond clip earrings: Again, something for my forties - again by Canturi, the domed cubism earrings have to be seen to be believed. Simply stunning.
4. White gold earrings: something classic and simple, like the Cartier panthere link earrings. For when I'm channeling Jackie O.
