Weights of different leathers

Let me add a grain of salt here. Or two.

Hermesmonkey just kindly posted a couple of pictures of 2 authentic 25 cm Birkins in another thread (attached). There are material, obvious differences between H bags.

Size = amount of leather = weight.

Differences between 35s could be even more significant. One person measuring a bag in a leather is going to inevitably get different results from someone else measuring the "same" bag (size, leather), created by a different craftsperson.

And of course, the accuracy of scales varies from household to household, manufacturer to manufacturer.

When we're talking in grams, these things make a difference.

ITA, these are good points, am glad you brought this up. This is why I posted the range of weights I got with different clemence bags. I used a tabletop, digital scale, that is accurate enough for post office mailings but beyond that I don't know how "accurate" it is. I weighed each bag at least twice, checked all the inner pockets first and left out the lock/clochette as previously mentioned.

Despite the discrepancy with the sizes and weighing instruments, some numbers are still better than nothing. While the weights posted are not the standard, i.e. a 35 cm Birkin in Clemence should weigh like the numbers posted above, they would give the readers an idea of how heavy it is.

So, let's keep weighing those 35 Birkins, especially the ones which data are still lacking. If, for instance, your bag's weight is different from the one listed above, please post it too so that we can come up with a range.

Thanks.

I agree that scales can vary? I don't care how different a particular scale may be, my Evergraine Birkin always weighs 3.5 pounds!

I first weigh myself. I next weigh myself holding my Birkin. Even if I weigh 123 pounds on one scale, and 128 pounds on another;my Birkin ALWAYS weighs 3.5 pounds!

duchess, I totally agree! And in the end we need an estimate of the weight of each bag and just to see which leather is lighter.

I would like to ask how'd you measure your bag? with keys?

...if anyone is so inclined to weigh their 35 cm Birkins, please do so and let's update this thread so that it goes to the Reference Section. I know that a lot of people complain about heavy bags and this is a great way to help them in their choices.

Allan here is some info of weights with no clochette, key, etc.... completely "naked".

35 Chevre Birkin ... 2002
995-1000 gr or 2 lb. 3.0-2 lb. 3.2 ounces
The reason for the range is that the digital scale's numbers sort of went back and forth between these two weights!

But here is something odd. I had weighed my Box Birkin 35 (2002) on this same scale earlier in this thread and it was 2 lb. 3.7 ounces - 1010 gr.

Tonight it was 2 lb. 3.0 ounces, 995 gr. I'm wondering if I weighed it before with the clochette and lock, etc.

Well, anyway, I hope these weights help!!

Did it really come from the same store? I have 2 Birkins that are 35cm in clemence and i have never seen such a difference.

Hi, am not sure I understand your question but yes, all of my clemence Birkins came from the same H store. The heavier ones are the ones from the more recent years.

Yay! 4 more to go.

I just weighed my evergrain with and without lock clochette on a new kitchen scale. I also weighed just the lock/clochette of my box kelly (they strap is slightly shorter on the Kelly clochette and here's the info):

Naked Evergrain Birkin: 2 lb 11 oz.
EG lock and clochette: 1.40 oz
boxcalf lock and clochette: 1.38 oz.

So I'm going to update the chart with my new info in red:
