Wash your Coach in Washing Machine?

I have one bag I might consider putting in the washing machine, but only after I try hand washing ... it's an old canvas book tote with leather trim that I absolutely love but used as a diaper bag for years so the white canvas is pretty nasty even though I was as careful as I could manage with the kids in tow ... I don't use it anymore because it's too dirty so it might be worth some risk. At first the washing machine idea horrified me, but I do have a front loader so it's much less likely to get damaged than in a top loading machine ... I'm still trying the hand washing first.

In the past I have put my Kate Spade microfiber messager bag through the washing machine. I have also washed my Vera Bradley coated fabric insulated lunch tote. I always put them in a net lingerie bag, wash them on delicate with warm water and mild detergent and then hang them up to air dry.

My KS messenger bag is too large to fit inside a regular lingerie bag but I have a net, drawstring laundry bag so I use that. Both bags have always come out clean and undamaged from their washing machine experience.

Putting a coach through the washer is a scary idea but if I wasn't carrying a bag because it was dirty (and I had tried hand-washing or spot-cleaning and it didn't work) then I would probably give the washer a try. What have you got to lose if you aren't wearing the bag due to stains and dirty spots?

Good luck!

Most I have done is to pull the lining out and hand wash that, but I don't think I could ever stomach washing one of my purses in the washing machine, maybe by hand if it was a last ditch effort.

It really depends on the bag. If it was a dark leather bag with a light lining, I'd be afraid that the dark color would bleed and stain the lining and turn it all dingy if I tried to send it through the washng machine.

But if the bag was so darn dirty that I couldn't even dream about carrying it, then I might be willing to live with a dingy lining (and possibly some fading of the bag's original color) just to be sure that it is clean.

I've given a lot of vintage bags baths in the sink (not the washer) without problems - but they are thick leather and unlined. Many of them are so dirty when I get them that I don't want to even think about putting my stuff inside them or carrying them. I just like know that they are clean after I give them a rigorous bath! And I usually haven't paid much for them or have any emotional investment in them so I don't worry much about the risk.

But a more modern, expensive, lined bag seems much more risky to me. Again, a lot depends on the bag and its condition but if youv'e tried everything else and it's too dirty to wear - I'd probably give the washer a try!

Ive washed this bag in the washer and it came out great. But its mostly canvas. The blue leather on the handle concerned me the most. I thought that it might bleed, but it didn't.

you can submerge and wash the solid leathers, the older vintage bags etc. I'm not sure how the lined purses will do. Gentle cycle, with lid open so no wringing at all. Even just rinse by hand. There are other threads on washing purses on here that are really helpful.

I wish I had the good luck with my Hampton you've had. Thankfully, I only invested $15 for her at a thrift shop. It was white and the only reason I even took a shot at it is because so many others on here have had such success, but mine is a white Hampton with lavender creed and trim, but with dark brown leather top trim similar to yours. (I also have a light blue w/dark blue accent smaller Hampton with the same brown leather trim that did much better) but this particular white bag did NOT do well because the dye in the brown trim is just AWFUL. I don't know why it was so much more runny/bleeding than the others have been. It makes me crazy, because I've washed and rehabbed at least 4 other vintage Coach bags, and even my red leather Station bag didn't bleed like this thing did!! So, I'll post a photo to show others my results. And I am HOPING to fix it and make it useable again, and I'll post "after" shots if it actually does improve. I'm glad yours looks great!!

What about a white leather Legacy Mandy courier? I bought it last year on Bonz and got color transfer on it from a black dress almost immediately. I tried Magic Eraser and it really didn't help, and I haven't carried her since, because it bothers me so bad.

Should I take the risk?

I know that this is an older post but recently Jessi posted the link below for a product that is supposed to remove color transfer, but nobody seems to have tried it yet so I don't know if it works. And it is only for certain types of leather so it may not be okay for your bag. I have a blond "natural leather" Kooba bag with color transfer and I don't think this would be the right stuff for it.

I would not put a vachetta leather legacy bag with striped lining into the washer unless I had absolutely tried everything else - and even then I still might not do it!
