Alert**Long post!
Well I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by an experience I’ve had recently in a retail Coach store. I don’t go to the factory or retail stores often. I just didn’t have the interest to look at the current selection. I’ve been to a factory store twice in the last year, and I did pop in a small retail store over the summer.
Recently I was intrigued by the rainbow link strap that I have heard people talk about on tPF and seen on the bags they post. I did go to the website to look at them. Also somebody posted a beautiful double swagger that also sent me to the website LOL. Not that I was going to buy it but I was just really curious. So I do need to go to a local mall to pick up a Sephora gift card about two weeks ago for the office Pollyanna. I decide to just check out the Coach store to see if they have the link strap. I happened to be carrying one of the two Coach “bling” bags that I own, a Hamptons business tote in beautiful black Vachetta. So I’m looking around the store and of course a sales associate asks me who I’m buying a bag for and I’m very upfront, I just say I’m looking.
Another older sales associate I would say my age approaches me, and then she looks at my bag and says, is that… And I said yes it is a Coach and we start to chat, and I tell her I have mostly vintage and we had a really nice chat. We talk about the purse forum, she’s familiar with it. And she asks me how do I know I’m not buying a fake bag online secondhand so I tell her that I’ve done as much as I can to educate myself and that there are women on the purse forum who are experts and will do free authentications. I am interested in the Custom hang tags and she suggested that I come back after the holidays when it’s less busy and she can show me the different fonts etc.
So I end up going back to the store the day after Christmas to look at the “ornaments” and I end up bringing my classic compartment tote. It’s pretty busy and these two sales associates were busy trying to move this rack of stuff /bags and as I was getting out of the way they smile and thanked me and one of them, a young man glanced at my bag and is reaching for the hang tag, and stops himself and said , is that… And I laughed and said yes and these two young sales associates were so eager and interested to look at my bag it was a lot of fun and of course I go into the whole thing about collecting vintage bags and the purse forum etc. etc. So the young guy wanted to look at the creed inside so of course I start emptying my bag . He is just really into learning more about vintage. It was surprising and refreshing to someone so young really interested. So now I have a new SA friend, lol.
Edited to add, A wonderful and Happy New Year to all!
Good story and I have a soft spot for Compartment Totes.

Wow, it sold for $29…really wishing I nabbed this! I think the Copley is the perfect size for me. Not sure if I’ll find one for as good a deal as that listing! I better start following this thread!!

Don't you hate it when that happens? Whenever that happens to me I remind myself that if I bid it may have cost me much more because the winning bidder may have bid much higher than that. That helps me feel better ;)

Right now I'm having a massive bag purge and trying not to buy any more. Not really succeeding since I bought one yesterday ;) But I I do have some listed for sale and I gave away 5 to my sister, 5 to Goodwill and a couple to my daughter. Plus I'm keeping track of what I buy all year to try and assess. But I still haven't actually convinced myself to count what I have.

LOL I do check my weight every morning. Not always happy with what I see ;) I really should force myself to count the bags to check myself.

I really do mostly just love collecting vintage Coach but not necessarily to use, some to just hang on the wall because they are amazing styles to look at and rehab. It is among my resolutions to use them all!

I don't weigh myself, haven't in years, except at the doctor. It's been going up lately, and I really don't want to deal with it.

I have kept a spreadsheet since 2011 of every purse or SLG I've bought. I have one where I list every purchase, and when I sell, I record the sale date, and the net amount I earned or lost. I have another master list that has everything I currently own, divided into categories, with a count and a total dollar amount per category. I know exactly how many purses and SLGs I own and how much money I have tied up in them.

I have some that are just to look at, but a few years ago, I made a resolution to mostly only buy those that were a size and shape that I would actually use. Even the really old ones that I want to preserve, I carry a few times a year. I have a few vintage SLGs and many keychains that are just to collect and admire. One of my vintage SLGs is a cosmetic case still in the original box so I think it would be a crime to use it.
yes, i've been cycling through every one of mine [except the swag] to see really which are keepers and which i should part company with. no point keeping them if i never use them. i love collecting vintage, but it's getting a bit out of hand!
I cycled through most of mine recently and quit when there were still a few left. I realized I didn't really want to carry those, so I should consider getting rid of them. Mostly, it is because they are too small.

so amazing. i never did keep a spreadsheet, in part because i never anticipated buying/selling/ so many vintage bags. had i known when started what a 'deep hole' i was falling into, i would have for sure. now its too late. but often i sell for less than i paid originaly, so in a way i don't want official records of that, ha ha. i think i'm down to the core 'keepers', but even that is too many, so i have to cull one more time. it is fun, but hard work.

Knowing that I'm losing money on the sales acts as a deterrent to buying, at least I hope it does.

doesnt work for me. i only buy bags i'm convinced i'm going to love, use and keep. so i never have resale in mind; i don't do the buy cheap/recondition/sell, just havent done much of that. occasionally i've made a lot on sales that i've decided not to keep [like when i have 5 pony express; or 8 musettes in my closet -- really???!!!], but often not. so unfortunately that's not a deterrent.
but trying to enter the new year with an unofficial ban on vintage purchases. we'll see how long that lasts!

I've never bought a pony express or a musette. Musette has never interested me. I'd love to have a pony express but I can't get myself to pay those prices for one, especially since I don't know if I'll actually love it. I'm still waiting to find one at a thrift store. I have a mental limit on what I'll spend on an ebay purchase. Sometimes I fall out of love with a bag that I used to think was perfect.

I don't look as much as I used to. I'm not enjoying the rehabs as much either. I have a couple that I can't get the energy up to finish.

Sorry I forgot to reply. As you have it now, you have your answer, no, unfortunatey. Funny, I bought mine off Goodwill online and they did not get the width right either.
I dunked mine and conditioned as it dried. Love the feel of the leather. It has been sitting for a few weeks while I have been busy. I think I may apply some dye/colorant to the bottom edges today, more so to experiment with this color I have. I will continue with this info on Rehab.
Hope to see a pic !

Hey Lake Effect! I am way late to the party with my reply. I did get the bag, It doesn't need any rehab (maybe a dunk to reshape it), and I love the style. Folders will sort of fit in it. They'll go in the side pocket, but they stick out the top a bit. I'll try to get some photos, but my craft room is buried in a quilt project at the moment. Getting to anything in the room deeper than my sewing machine is a challenge. :)
