Please show creed pics and serial number date codes when asking about color names, Coach usually changed colors according to the SEASON, not necessarily the calendar year.

The Chester WAS available in Sapphire, but it would have been made in early 1993. Sapphire had been dropped by late 1993, it doesn't appear in any other color list I can find. "BLU" in a 1997 bag stands for BLUE.
Of course. My apologies. It's quite dark and after several shots (with a flashlight) as well as a hint of highlighting make up - here is the creed.

It's from June 1997 so if in Real Life it's lighter than Navy it could have been Blue and considered as one of the Fall bags. Or maybe it was Navy, it's sitting right on the Seasons border. Blues are a beetch to photograph and I've seen as many as three different shades of blue in a set of 10 or 12 photos for the same bag. I know that Sapphire sounds a lot more exciting than Blue but that's Coach's naming decision, not mine. Coach's vintage "Blue" is like their vintage "Red", it covers a lot of different shades.

As for purple-ish blues, there was a very dark purple with blue tones (or vice-versa) called Ink and available in the Tribeca line but that didn't come out until some time in 1998 and the Tribeca Ink color wasn't shared with other lines from what I've seen.

Purple shades and even colors with purple overtones have always been scarce with Coach until about the last 15 years. Believe me, I've looked at, and often bought, anything from Coach that even showed a hint of being Purple and have almost always been disappointed. Even with purples becoming more available since the Great Escape (aka the move to China) I still have more purple Kiplings than Coaches. And I LOOOOOOVE purple handbags!

Thanks! Yes, Sapphire sounds far more exciting. Maybe dying in those blues and purples was more difficult than we know of. Clearly, there are many others who love those blues and purples and it's too bad that Coach didn't do more bags in those colors. So many Reds not enough blues.

... On the tag, I had questioned the U vs. V. I would like to see new old stock with tag attached on another navy blue bag with this hardware color. I’ve got so many Willis I may have one. Need to look when I have some time.

Yep, it might just be the way their price tag printers had to print a "U". It's actually curved like a U on the sides near the bottom but then comes to a bit of a point right in the center.

Kind of like Bulgari using BVLGARI as their trademark, because it makes the name look like something from Roman times that you'd see carved on a temple or statue. It gives it that cachet of antiquity. According to my HS Latin teacher, the ancient Romans carved their Us as Vs to make it easier to carve into stone with a hammer and chisel, although they still managed to get the curves in their Os and usually their Ss and Bs. But my Latin teacher should know, she was old enough to have been there.

I love the look of the hasp bag but I've seen several where it looks like the metal is discolored and can't be polished back to looking nice. That scares me about getting one.
I've worked a lot with antique brass and it can be polished nicely as well as adding a clear coat to protect it. Tarnishing will always happen but there are ways to polish it.

Example of brass cleaning.. This is an art deco walnut nightstand with 100 year old Bakelite (that's the plastic dome part) with solid antique brass handles that I made for my sister. The brass was a mess. I removed all the lacquer, polished and applied a clear coat. They turned out amazing!

I know art deco style is not appealing to many but this was for my sister and her specifications. I wanted to show that brass is easier to work with than most anticipate.

That's beautiful!

I'm not afraid of brass. My worry with the hasp is that it isn't solid brass and polishing will expose the base metal.
