Tips for Caring for your Burberry PVC

I have a beautiful Burberry Exploded check tote w/ the canvas that is real canvas and NOT coated..I love it but I am afraid to use it as it absorbs everything and looks so dinghy....dye transfer, dirt, you name it and I am Very Careful! I clean it w/ soap and water and even scotch-guard it but it's right back to picking up dirt again! My cleaning is starting to wear on the corners..any one have any ideas...anything better than scotch-guard? thanks!!!!!!!!!!

Honestly, once its dirty it is dirty. My best advice is to clean it at the end of everyday. I just use regular hand soap or bar of soap rubbed in a damp face cloth and scrub scrub away! It definitely helps get rid of "grime" that makes your bag darker and will get rid of dye transfer from jeans if done the same day, it has even worked a week after dye transfer for me. However, pen marks are practicially impossible to remove since the material of the pvc isnt actually cloth..thus, hairspray will do shizz all for you... I have two purses that are pvc and have already gotten rid of one because of the ridiculous maintenance involved in keeping that bright nova check design

have you guys tried Apple Leather Cleaner & Conditioner? I have a PVC Novacheck Print Satchel and i religiously clean my bag with this on a weekly basis. I've had the bag for almost 2 years and it is still in mint condition.

I carry baby wipes (I just had a baby in November) and have found time and time again that those get anything clean! If I find spots on mine I just use that to clean and so far I haven't had any problems with stains staying!

^ i've just taken out my new burberry out for 1 night and i found 3 black marks on them - i've tried to rub them off but i think they're not permanent stains!

i don't even know how it happened!!!! ????

I have a canvas tote and I made a clear plastic cover for it that attaches with black ribbons to the handles. It keeps my bag pretty and safe.

(the cat is there for size comparison and cause she was curious)

Isn't that how they used to cover furniture(in plastic) so it wouldn't get dirty?

Margaret's Cleaners is pleased to be able to share this useful information with our friends and customers. Chuck Horst had the pleasure of being quoted in the March 2009 InStyle Magazine in a short article on denim. We also happened to have had the opportunity to take before and after photos of a purse we cleaned recently which had been damaged by dye transfer, the subject of the "question."

Question: How do I remove blue dye stains from my shoes and bags?

Answer: The trade-off to supersaturated indigo jeans is that the dye process for such a dark finish doesn’t always set well, according to Chuck Horst, one of the owners of Margaret's Cleaners in La Jolla, California. Before wearing them with light accessories, make sure they've been washed at least eight times to prevent color transference. If smudging does occur, you'll need to take the damaged item to a cleaning specialist, who will use chemicals to lift the dye without altering the original hue of your purse or pumps. Expect to pay at least $40. Both leather and suede can be saved, but it will take a fairy godmother to restore PVC-coated canvas items to stain-free status.

More about denim & dye transfer...

* When dye transfers from one fabric or material to another, it is termed "crocking." The indigo dye used in denim is difficult and time-consuming to apply during the manufacturing process. Even when done properly, "fugitive" dye often results and subsequently causes crocking, as illustrated in the before photograph above.

* This fugitive dye problem occurs regardless of the culprit garment's cost or brand name. Usual dye fixation remedies are not useful with indigo dye due to its non-ionic nature. The only method of rendering denim "safe" is to remove the excess dye with multiple washings. To determine if fugitive dye is still an issue in your garment, perform a crocking test by rubbing the denim with a bright white piece of fabric.

* At Margaret's we have had great success removing dye transfer from leather, cloth and suede handbags. However, our success with PVC (vinyl over canvas) and patent leather has been very limited. Once dye penetrates the clear coating, it cannot be removed or repaired. So be very careful with PVC or patent accessories when you’re wearing a new blue denim garment.

Oh I'm so depressed after reading this post. I have my first Burberry Degrade Tote PVC bag being delivered tomorrow and was sooo excited but after reading this I will be too paranoid to use it. I thought this would be a durable bag? So sad!

I'm two years late, but I just recently acquired a Nova Check Bowling Bag and my dark denims made a stain on one of the sides  I was so devastated and tried my best to clean it with soap and water and white cloth. It worked but the color on the beige parts will never be the same.

I think I have posted in some of the threads that the best thing to use is the Burberry PVC cleaning foam, however, from what I was told here it may only be available in Europe. I have worn my Nova tote quite a few times since last September since I got it and mine just does not get stained but then after reading up on the issue here I have learnt that you really do not want to use it with new items of clothing which may rub off, otherwise I have found it to be a very durable bag much more so than my leather bags and light colored leather will also get almost unremovable stains if worn with new dark clothing. Babywipes may work as some have suggested and from experience I would say that Novas should be inspected after each time of wear for stains and cleaned at least after every second time of wear since stains will be much easier to remove if fresh. Just my suggestions but there are threads on this issue on this forum.
