Tiffany engagement ring with SI1?

So the store in the states came back with these:
.86 F VS2 $13,200
.92 G IF $16,400
.93 F VVS1 $17,000

I'm including the prices this time for realistic opinions. I think I would like th second one at this point. However we are going to stay in Canada to get it because after tax, duty and the exchange rate it'll end up being more.

Are they able to bring these in for you to look at? Are these all Soleste style? When I was ring shopping, I looked at a few Soleste rings at Tiffany and with the double halo, I found just under 1 carat had great finger coverage. Those last two sound very promising. I personally have a G diamond and it shows very "white" in its setting.

They are all soleste styles. James and I were hoping to get the ring here in Toronto, and we are supposed to hear from that SA tomorrow. I really like the idea of having an IF but I'm still not sold since its in the states and will probably cost much more.

The IF and VVS is so beyond overkill on the clarity. But if it's important to you to have high specs to "make up for" the size, then do what makes you comfortable. It won't make a difference with the sparkle factor. Sparkle is ALL CUT.

Oh! So those prices are in US, not CDN. They seemed low - esp after the quotes I got at Tiffany in Vancouver.

I have read on the boards here of people in Canada negotiating lower prices due to our high dollar now. Once the rings are in Toronto you could try and negotiate, or tell them that you will have send it back to buy in the US since it is so much better priced. Worth a shot to negotiate if you have your heart set on one of them.

Just my $.02--I'd prefer an H SI1 (excellent cut) that was a full carat over an IF or VVS F that's less than a carat any day. I'd even take the H SI1 under a carat to save the money. Maybe one out of 100 people would be able to tell on the color without a side-by-side comparison and NO ONE would be able to tell on clarity.

Hi OP! I have a soleste (and a Classic Setting)! I would recommend you check all the rings in the dim light or natural sunlight when the small diamonds don't sparkle much. Under the direct sunlight or strong store light, the ring sparkles like crazy ane you cannot see the structure. Especially, check the small diamonds at the four corners in the inside halo. They tend to less sparkle, depending on the shape of the ring.:smile1:

It sounds like you have some exciting choices. I didn't read through all of the responses, but I probably would not get a SI1 from Tiffany. It would not be "mind clean" for me and I'd probably be kicking myself that I paid the huge Tiffany premium for an SI1 stone.

I got engaged with a 1.15 G VS2 Tiffany solitaire, and upgraded to an 1.9 I VS1 at 4 years (for size, which mattered to me alot more than I originally thought). Both stones were Triple EX; the I stone has medium blue fluorescence. I love the stone- it faces up very white.

Your rings are absolutely gorgeous! I would really like to get close to a 1.2, so we'll see what happens!

 on both

I just wanted to add a "+1" to the above. For me, the fire and sparkle is what catches my eye. A large but dull stone won't catch my eye. Given the choice, I'd give up size for brilliance.:smile1:

:DI agree with you. You have to see all the rings in real life and decide which one "sparkles" at you the most!!! I hate seeing big diamonds without sparkle in them...SO DULL.

Isn't US pricing around 20% cheaper than Canada most of the time? But I guess if you wanna bring the ring back LEGALLY then you gotta pay taxes on both ends then that will be the same in the end. Most of my friends only paid taxes in the states and just sneaked back the engagement ring here...

Seriously? My boyfriend wants to do that but technically that's jail time! lol not sure if that's worth it. I'm going to look into it.
We feel like we're settling with a smaller diamond that originally intended.

You will get fined BIG TIME if you get caught so it's all up to if you want to risk it or not. However, you still need to pay US taxes if you buys in the states.

I don't know how they will calculate the price in CAD since the diamonds you listed are all from the US pricing.

All I did was, I compared the diamonds with same specs (I know not all of them will be priced the SAME even all specs are the same) and I figured it it was 20% more expensive in canada than US 2y ago. I don't know what is it like now since CAD is much higher than 2y ago...about 15 cents higher now.

I think in the end were still saving tax at least after both tax and duty. I think they only charge you a smaller percent, not all 13... I'll have to call and find out.

Our SA in the states says she has a ring coming in with an H or I, and between 1-1.25 in our price range! That would be really nice!
