I never knew this. Is it true of all fancy cuts, no higher cut grading than very good? I have been a little bit sad that my pear is not triple ex lol.
Yes, fancies only go up to a "very good". Fancies are not graded the same way as Rounds or Princesses. Those are two shapes that cut quality grading has been developed for as they are completely "symmetrical" shapes. When you get out of entirely symmetrical shapes, that changes things a great deal, and a pear would qualify. Those you are more worried about bowties and the like. It has to be appealing to your eye because in fancies it becomes even more subjective.

I just have a question. My boyfriend and I wanted to get a ring that was higher than a carat. If we went somewhere other than tiffanys we were looking 1.7-2.0 carats. But now that we are looking at a ring with a double halo, let alone one halo, we are looking into much smaller center stones. We tried on the .82 that I really liked and are doing a search for a .90+
Does anyone think that that size is a little small? I know that isn't what matters at all, but I'm having a hard time letting go of having a carat to going under a carat.

I don't think that size is small at all but it will face up on it's own smaller than a Round. I would see if the SA can pull some rings in the .9-1.10 ct range. That double halo will make up for finger coverage more than I think you realize.

We had actually compared a .85 solitaire to the .82 soleste and loved it. I even had a hard time telling the difference in size between the .8 and 1.07. So I think a .9 would be amazing. I hate that I think this, but when I think " we were going to get a 2 carat solitaire" the idea of going under a carat makes me nervous. I don't want to upgrade and although we are young I want it to last forever. I loved the .82, but I find I lean towards the larger stone. It's like this itch I get or something I can't explain it and I actually hate it! I'm hoping something really high in colour and clarity comes back, that would make me feel really good I think.... I know someone reading this will probably think I'm an awful person... I know it's not about size. But I've dreamt about this my entire life and I'm so lucky to have James and he wants to do this for us, I just sometimes wish it could be a little larger. But that just isn't realistic right now because the ring is very popular... But I know I'll be happy no matter what as long as I have him.

If you aren't set on Tiffany's you can have a similar ring made elsewhere which would almost certainly allow for a larger stone.

But I don't think you're awful. If you had something in your head, it's hard to "settle" for something else, esp on something that's USUALLY a one-time purchase.

Don't feel badly about wanting a "larger" stone! Everybody has different taste in jewelry, and stats can be very appealing too. You're simply honest about what you prefer. Of course the size/style of the ring is in no way a reflection of your relationship with your fiance. It's a piece of jewelry that you will wear for the rest of your life and it should be beautiful in every way in your eyes. Just because you prefer the larger size does not mean that you are greedy or ungrateful or anything like that! It means you find a larger stone more attractive. Get the ring you love the most within your price range and don't worry about anyone's opinion but your fiance's.

We're definitely set on tiffanys. The problem is in the summer we did a search with 1.3 etc in our price range and now there isn't much. We can always have one made which will take 6 months ish with Tiffany's. It's also really hard because if we're lucky, we'll have the ring in my Christmas. If we're lucky :( so I have to now forget being engaged by Christmas like I had hoped. It's all a bit much right now... :(

Thank you, that makes me feel a bit better actually :)

Thank you so much for the explanation! I was so in love with the sparkle that I didn't pay any mind to the certs. Our jeweler did explain about the bowtie, luckily there isn't really much of one.

I'm a little bit confused. Does that mean it won't sparkle as much? I'm not sure exactly what those 3 do!!

Ame was explaining the different grading for fancy cut diamonds versus princess/round brilliant. But to my understanding, yes the higher the cut the more the stone will sparkle.

Correct. If a stone is not well cut, it will not sparkle as much as a well cut stone. Color plays a minimal role, as does clarity until you get into the I1-I3 clarity range, because at that rate you might have some serious inclusions inhibiting the facets. Some I1s could be ok, if it's a prongable inclusion, but most are not.

The better the cut, the better the sparkle. But what's most important is that the stone speaks to you. You're the one that has to love it.

Actually I am debating about that...but I am going for higher colour and clarity (also the cut, symmetry, polish as excellent, with no flourescence) than the carat size. The sparkle and colour mean more to me and I think being 0.9+ doesn't make it imperfect. But that's just me! :p
Actually about how many % different in the price in US vs Canada (before tax)?
Don't worry about making xmas as deadline! There is always Valentine's day around the corner! :graucho: Most importantly is that you find the perfect stone that you like! I am still patiently hunting for mine! Won't settle for anything less than perfect in my own mind!

For the soleste, the designs are handcrafted. So no two rings will look the same. If you go below a 1ct, the ring tends to be squarish. Whereas anything bigger than 1ct, the dimond tends to be rectangularish.

I don't think you want to go really big with a soleste in terms of ct because of the double halo. There are some threads that discuss large soleste rings here (they are mostly about the yellow diamond though):

In terms of sparkle, the round is the most "sparkly" from a distance. Cushion cuts have the "crushed ice" look. They don't have as much fire from a far as a round diamond. But it is pretty to look directly at. Can you ask the sales person if you could walk outside with the diamond rings you selected? They usually will let you but you will be assisted by their security guards in case you run. Diamonds tend to look different under natural sunlight and the "flaws" become more visible. Flaws such as color, inclusions, poor light reflection, etc.

Personally, I would select fire or sparkle over the size of the diamond. It reminds me of high school when this girl wore a small diamond stud, but that thing was "flirting" with the light like crazy. (CZ can't do that.) You could see this small diamond on her ear sparkling 50 feet away. I think those diamonds are worth buying and what Ame is trying to help you select. ;) The size of the diamond doesn't matter. It's really the quality or that "fire" people talk about of a diamond that matters (the diamond that "catches" the eye)... and, unfortunately, it's usually best seen in person rather than on paper or even pictures.

Hopes this helps! Congrats on your pending engagement.

I just wanted to add a "+1" to the above. For me, the fire and sparkle is what catches my eye. A large but dull stone won't catch my eye. Given the choice, I'd give up size for brilliance.:smile1:

So the store in the states came back with these:
.86 F VS2 $13,200
.92 G IF $16,400
.93 F VVS1 $17,000

I'm including the prices this time for realistic opinions. I think I would like th second one at this point. However we are going to stay in Canada to get it because after tax, duty and the exchange rate it'll end up being more.
