If you scroll up, you can see the bag I bought. I wasn't going to dunk it, just give it a quick clean with maybe a damp cloth or something but this bag is SO musty that I had to dunk it. Unfortunately, the dunking didn't help and it still smells musty. Instead of dish soap, I just used dial hand soap...vanilla and honey or something like that.

I have been VERY vigilant with conditioning the leather at this point. I conditioned it before I dunked it even. I seriously don't want it to crack. There has been a spot here and there where the leather did crack around the top trim. No biggie I guess, I'll look into later to see if there is maybe something I could use to touch it up. Unfortunately, I didn't pre condition the drawstring so I'm not sure if it's going to survive. Again, that's no big deal, I think I'll just go to the craft store and see if I can find some kind of matching leather. I don't like the way these look with ribbons or scarves.

The bag has held up REALLY well for being almost 30 years old. Right now it's drying and I think I'm just going to let it alone all night and see how it is in the morning. I don't want to "stress" it.

I did mix some vinegar and water and wiped down the whole thing to see if it would get rid of the musty smell, but now it just smells like musty vinegar. I did a google search and it appears that several people have had this issue and everything said to dump in straight baking soda. I did do that (I just dumped some on a towel and laid it in the bottom) but I'm going to wait until it dries and see how it is.

Oh and the stain on the bottom of the bag looks like it came from the inside. After I got the bag wet and the stain "came out" and I could see where it looks like something was spilled inside and actually soaked through to the vachetta. This is my first LV and I'm super excited to use it. Even if it has imperfections, I don't care as long as it doesn't smell musty...LOL

LV will replace the drawstring. Mine broke before Christmas, I called LV client services and they said to bring into the store. I wanted to avoid the Christmas crowds at the Mall, so I hope to get in there in the next few weeks.

I do agree that dunked in won't remove the scent. No matter your detergent is scented or in scented.

I even add in the Dettol antibacterial, it does make the interial smell like it, but the ciggy smell come back after like 3-4 days.
Still have no way to remove it.
😅😅

It keep floating up.....

So I changed it to this and I filled the bag inside with water..
:)

I read to just dump in baking soda. In your case though, I don't know if it'll work.

I heard to remove cig smell (not necessarily for bags...I knew someone who used to work with books and she did this...) wrap the bag in newspaper and then put it in a bucket full of kitty litter for at least a week. I'm not sure if that'll work for your bag. If it were ME, I would probably wrap it in maybe a pillowcase before the newspaper because you don't want the ink rubbing off on your bag.
I had a stinky cig bag and honestly, it just took time. Eventually it aired out and was totally gone. I don't know about LVs though because it seems like they hold in the smell.

I'm really hoping I can get the smell out. Honestly I think it'll eventually go away, but I DO want to carry the bag and I don't want the smell to transfer to my items. I'm just going to keep working at it and I'll let you know if I can find anything that works.

yeah I think most of the solutions are either vinegar, baking soda, coffee grounds or dryer sheets.

Do keep us updated on what works for you :)

I did have an LV with the musty smell which I talked about in the last few post.
I try wiped down with alcohol, and put in the coffee ground (for 1 week) and tie up the plastic bag, dryer sheet ( for 1 week), charcoal ( another 1 week) , Meguier odour removal spray, and finally i gave up and let it air and sun beside the window ( for more than 1 month)

Honestly, not to make you down though, none of it work. The sun and air, just made it that bit better. I have now sent in to the professional clean, hopefully they can get rid of it.

And thank you for your good will :)))

Let me know if getting it professionally cleaned works.

Did you try the newspaper in kitty litter at all?

I just flipped my bag over, forgetting it was full of baking soda......:roflmfao:

Nope,
I sent in the bag last week already. I always wanted to use it, but the smell stop me from doing so.
I tried once with the bag out, but the smell, oh, i really can smell it when i was in the bus.
so i gave up.

can't wait to see your result :)

I cleaned out the baking soda as best as I could (well, I didn't try too hard either). Right now it's sitting outside since it's only 25*. I really don't have room to stuff it in my freezer. It's not in a bag or anything, just sitting on my bench.
I just went out to smell it and it kind of smells worse but I think it's just from the cold air. I'm going to bring it in in a little while and let it warm up.
I have a cat so I have kitty litter. I think I'm going to put some in a sock and tie the bag shut with the straps inside to see if it'll absorb some of the smell. The strap still smells like vinegar.

I'm assuming this bag is just dirty. No matter what I wipe with it still comes out brown on the towel. Maybe if I clean it up some more it'll not smell as bad. I'm not dunking it again though.
I also have to pick up some more leather CPR.

Mini update. I brought this in and it still smells musty (I figured as much).
I wiped the hell out of it with baby wipes. They all came out dirty so I pretty much wiped until they came clean. Since I'm low on leather conditioner, and because the leather side strips are slightly cracking, I conditioned with coconut oil. It actually worked really well and didn't make the vachetta any darker once it soaked in.
It smells a lot less musty. Enough to where I think I might be able to carry it.
I think the musty smell is coming from the leather mostly. The inside smells like baking soda now. I'm going to put some essential oil on a towel and put it in a bag for now. I really don't know what else to do. I guess it just needs time at this point.

Oh eek...didn't realize I had 2 names going on. On the app, I use missy_g and I use pinkie1205 on my laptop....At one point, I had to make a new user name because no matter what I did, I couldn't get my username logged in...that's why I have 2. Anyway, I'll fix that in a sec.

I got a brilliant idea (maybe)...I took a sock and filled it with baking soda, then covered the sock/baking soda with lavender and frankincense oil. Since they both are kind of natural deordorizers, I really hope it works. I have it wrapped in a garbage bag with the satchet and sitting outside again.

Here is my rescue and I could use some advice on what to clean the fabric off white canvas trim. There aren't actual stains, just overall dingyness from dirt.ImageUploadedByPurseForum1453322876.027750.jpgImageUploadedByPurseForum1453322885.346190.jpg
