If you scroll up, you can see the bag I bought. I wasn't going to dunk it, just give it a quick clean with maybe a damp cloth or something but this bag is SO musty that I had to dunk it. Unfortunately, the dunking didn't help and it still smells musty. Instead of dish soap, I just used dial hand soap...vanilla and honey or something like that.
I have been VERY vigilant with conditioning the leather at this point. I conditioned it before I dunked it even. I seriously don't want it to crack. There has been a spot here and there where the leather did crack around the top trim. No biggie I guess, I'll look into later to see if there is maybe something I could use to touch it up. Unfortunately, I didn't pre condition the drawstring so I'm not sure if it's going to survive. Again, that's no big deal, I think I'll just go to the craft store and see if I can find some kind of matching leather. I don't like the way these look with ribbons or scarves.
The bag has held up REALLY well for being almost 30 years old. Right now it's drying and I think I'm just going to let it alone all night and see how it is in the morning. I don't want to "stress" it.
I did mix some vinegar and water and wiped down the whole thing to see if it would get rid of the musty smell, but now it just smells like musty vinegar. I did a google search and it appears that several people have had this issue and everything said to dump in straight baking soda. I did do that (I just dumped some on a towel and laid it in the bottom) but I'm going to wait until it dries and see how it is.
Oh and the stain on the bottom of the bag looks like it came from the inside. After I got the bag wet and the stain "came out" and I could see where it looks like something was spilled inside and actually soaked through to the vachetta. This is my first LV and I'm super excited to use it. Even if it has imperfections, I don't care as long as it doesn't smell musty...LOL
Oh nice! I wonder how much it'll cost? I don't even know where the closest LV is....

I read to just dump in baking soda. In your case though, I don't know if it'll work.
I heard to remove cig smell (not necessarily for bags...I knew someone who used to work with books and she did this...) wrap the bag in newspaper and then put it in a bucket full of kitty litter for at least a week. I'm not sure if that'll work for your bag. If it were ME, I would probably wrap it in maybe a pillowcase before the newspaper because you don't want the ink rubbing off on your bag.
I had a stinky cig bag and honestly, it just took time. Eventually it aired out and was totally gone. I don't know about LVs though because it seems like they hold in the smell.
I'm really hoping I can get the smell out. Honestly I think it'll eventually go away, but I DO want to carry the bag and I don't want the smell to transfer to my items. I'm just going to keep working at it and I'll let you know if I can find anything that works.
Let me know if getting it professionally cleaned works.
Did you try the newspaper in kitty litter at all?
I just flipped my bag over, forgetting it was full of baking soda......![]()
