You shouldn’t get a bag because it holds its value, but because you love it. Bags aren’t good investment pieces. Although Chanel bags especially classic pieces like the Boy Flap increase in price, so does inflation. Buy whatever bag speaks to you unless you simply want to resell it

Hello all,
New here in the forum...
I registered because i want to have your opinion on this...
I am making as a birthday gift to my girl her first CHANEL BOY!
So i visited the official distributor in the country.
There was one 28cm (new grande size) black in caviar leather with gunmetal grey matte chain and logo.
And another one 28cm black in lambskin leather with gold matte hardware.
Which of the two shall i get her?
I am reading about the durability of the caviar VS the smooth looks of the lambskin....
Also i have one question... The lambskin that they showed me, seemed a bit "tired" in terms of the leather texture....
Not used, but like ot was there for some time....
How can i know the manufactury date?

Here are some photos i took.

Regards,
Mike

Hi Mike-

Are you sure this is lambskin? This looks like smooth calfskin to me. Lambskin is usually puffier. I have the exact one in black with ruthenium hardware (which is the gunmetal matte grey u mention above). I specifically chose this type of leather because it gives me the smoothness of the lambskin with the durability of the caviar (the caviar is grained calfskin). I absolutely love it and use it a lot. Don’t have to baby it like the lambskin which is known to scratch easier. Below are photos of it as well as of the one with the gold hardware like yours. My SA had both when I bought it but at that time I preferred the ruthenium because I have another black bag with gold hardware.

Also to give you perspective here are examples of the similarity in the looks of both the lambskin and the smooth calfskin. The first bag is lambskin and the second is smooth calfskin.

Here’s a good article to show you how to interpret and extract info from Chanel handbag tags. You’ll find multiple posts on this topic if you search here on the forum as well.

Here’s my bag from Chanel website with the highlighted code for the type of leather and hw:

Hope that helps. Good luck!

Thank you so much for your reply
For some reason i cannot see the attachments (something with my access rights as a new user)
Could you re-attach them please as new photos in this post?
Thanks again!
So i saw another one n store that the leather is more shiny (i guess that is the lambskin)
Is there a way to tell form the code? The manufactury date?

Oops, I don’t know what went wrong or how to fix it but I’ll give it another try. Hope it works this time. If not maybe some of the experts here can guide us.

Here’s the smooth calfskin bags in both ruthenium hw and aged gold hw

Here’s an example of lambskin

And same pattern (but different color) in smooth calfskin

To identify the type of leather and hardware from the code look at the Y number (see below circled). In case of my smooth calfskin bag the code is Y09953

I love lambskin, but not for certain bags, one of those being the boy bag. The corners in particular seem to be more sensitive to wear on this style in the lamb. I would go with the smooth calf or caviar in this style, it will be way more worry free and not as susceptible to corner wear. Also, in the pic of bags you show, it looks like they are the new medium size- unless she needs that size of bag, the size one size smaller (old medium size as referred to here) is a more popular size and works way better if she plans to wear crossbody. As for the hardware, that is a personal preference, maybe inquire and see what she likes better in regards to gold vs silver or ruthenium hardware. To answer your question about the manufacture date, the serial sticker inside the bag or the authenticity card will provide a serial number that you can then use to get a manufacture date. You can probably do a quick google or internet search to find out once you get that number. However, current season bags are in the 27 million range for serial numbers.

I’m sorry, it’s very hard to tell for sure just by looking at the photos. The second one seems to look like smooth calfskin to me. It looks very similar to mine. The first one looks more shiny but I can’t tell if it’s just the flash/lighting. I think the tags will definitely give you a definitive answer. The SA in the store should also be able to tell you, too. They have all the details on the bags they have.
