Small diamonds (1ct and under)

oh I wouldn't turn it down, long as it was ideal cut and eye clean!

I do know that in the US the average is under 1/2 ct. And in most parts of the world IF they have a diamond it's DEFINITELY well under 1/2. Diamonds are relatively "cheap" in the states versus other parts of the world.

I am loving all of these pretty rings, and they look gorgeous on many of you. I have small fingers so larger stones look really odd on me. I have a friend with a 4.2 ct solitaire and about 2 cts surrounding, and when I put on her huge ring it looks like it came from a Cracker Jack box.

This is true, and not only because diamonds are more expensive in some parts of the world. In some cultures marriage is considered a sacred sacrament and it is thought to be gauche to associate a large "blingy" diamond with a religious event. Not that they don't wear diamonds on their wedding rings, but they are definitely smaller, of a pave or channel set style.

I'm from such a culture and my grandmothers would have been very disapproving if I had a diamond on my wedding band.

Now, for the right hand or rings on other fingers, the sky's the limit. But for the wedding ring, less less less -- at least in my culture.

Thanks for responding Whoops and Ame!

I totally agree with you Whoops! I'd rather have a better quality diamond. :D I don't think a 1ct is small by any means. I think for most people it is considered to be a "big" size, but any diamond is nice! It's the thought and love that counts from your spouse when they pick the ring out for their special someone!

Yup yup! Just looking through the rings on this thread versus the larger thread i definitely notice the color range is slightly higher here. Lots of DFE colorless range and VV quality. Or maybe just me? People always have thief preferences and the most important is the person that gave it to me. Even if he told me I could upgrade in the future I would refuse it. The sentiment is the most valuable part.

Ame- I agree that with the media you can potentially get caught up with their awesomely huge bling but who wouldn't really want a big rock if a guy proposed to them with one?? lol :graucho:

Not only that, but it's easy to get caught up in forum hype!

Thinking about it, I don't think I'd be too comfortable wearing a 4ct diamond, but on the other hand, it depends on the circumstances & how it was presented to me.

Would I upgrade to 4 cts? I don't think so

Oh boy do we get caught up... It never ends. Ring then studs then rolex ten Cartier love bracelet then... It doesn't stop!

I was actually thinking of practicality the other day too. My coworker has a very wealthy husband and when they got married 40 years ago he presented her a 3 or 4 carat diamond. (i saw the wedding pictures and wow! It was stunning!) She was 18, wore it a few times and never again. She hated the attention and it didn't suit her. Her husband was upset she wouldn't wear it and got her a 1 carat on platinum to wear everyday and the original has been in the safe deposit since. I asked her why she doesn't wear it and she said it just wasn't practical for job searching, raising their child and all the everyday things. She said she felt limited by wesring it because she didn't want to be on the bus or out by herself. Everytime she wore it she would have to worry about it. I thought that's actually really true and I never thought of it that way. I want a ring I can wear everyday and not have to worry as much about it. It's easy to always want bigger but it may not always be the best for your lifestyle.

that's really interesting to hear but definitely makes a lot of sense. I wouldn't want to have to worry about it too, especially wearing it out alone! Thanks for sharing that story :D

Everyone makes valid points! I think it's hilarious how different (most of the time) the difference between the POV of men vs. women. Women can get caught up in all the hype of huge diamonds but I've known men where they think a diamond a lot less under 1ct is a total rock and think those sizes are massive! It's just interesting to see the difference in opinion between genders

and doreenjoy, that's super interesting! I never knew some religions and cultures thought that diamonds were a no-no for a ring! Thanks for sharing, it's nice to learn something new everyday!

I have about a 3 carat center stone ering and I've never felt uncomfortable wearing it. Well in shady areas or the subway I might turn it around, but I did the same with my 1.7 carat princess. And the diamond is set pretty high and it doesn't get banged around, so it really depends. I do find it amusing that I get more comments on it from men rather than women.

Your ring must be beautiful and what an upgrade from the princess! I think worrying about it is a personal thing and I didn't mean that it's bad to have a 3 carat+ ring so I hope you didn't take it that way or anyone does. It just put things into perspective for me a little, with all the gorgeous rings on here it is so easy to get caught up and desire something larger but maybe not practical for your own personal lifestyle. Ive already smacked my hand enough as it is! Haha

My coworker said that she used to get weird comments from guys too mostly. She is petite and people would mostly ask if it's real and she would say "Real CZ!" haha

Whoops it's not an upgrade in diamond, it's an upgrade in man, lol. (2nd marriage). And I took no offense whatsoever!

The 2 ct. RB I used to wear on my other hand was my mother's engagement ring. She is deceased and she left it to me. I would love to start wearing it again but it's a really unusual custom setting (the RB is set in the middle of a love knot) and it's in 18k yellow gold and I don't really want to dip it. My current e ring is in white gold.

Oh wow! both rings sound lovely though. I can understand why you wouldn't want to redip it. I hope you didn't take offense to anything I said either! I think a 3+ carat ring is simply GORGEOUS but that I can also see why some people could worry about wearing it 24/7. ;)

Well in that case! It's even better! Haha

There is definitely that sentiment with inherited rings. When my grandmother passed away we didn't even want to size it!

My e-ring is 0.47 ct total. I love that it's a bit different, and that I have never seen anyone else wearing it around here.
My fiance and I were in Geneva, and I saw it displayed in a shop window. We went in to have a look at it - and my fiance bought it right there and then. He proposed to me just by the lake, right behind the LV shop.
