Selling Chanel for Hermes

You seem not to love it, even not to like it. So I would sell it. The memorys regarding your Honeymoon are in your heart, not in your purse. Did you consider to sell it for a caviar m/l with gold hw? It sound like you would like it much more. You would still have a classic in your collection, but it sounds you would like it way more than your curent bag.
True. Well said.

I would sell if you can get what you paid for it or at least close (I would think so being a classic in new condition, maybe you can even get more than you paid). You don't care for the hardware color, the strap drop, or the type of leather and you don't wear this bag. I'm not that sentimental when it comes to material things though. If you do come back around to loving Chanel in the future, get the bag you really want. I think it's just a good lesson to not settle and always wait for what you really want.
I agree, purse is just a purse, only a material thing in the end.

I'm in the sell camp. I'm also not really sentimental.

You have the memories and I'm sure a lovely marriage, the bag doesn't represent it - the love you share is evidence enough.
+1

I agree with those ladies' best advice and wise comments.

ended up selling! and honestly don't regret it!
OP @keekee Congrats on your decision of selling ( and getting new bag you'd love ) I went through exact similar dilemma and experienced once and I promise you, It will surely bring you a joy when you get the new one you really love and no regret at all when actually start to use the new one

Hi all,

I would really like to get my first (and probably only) Hermes bag. I love how Hermes is so classic and would see this purchase as a forever bag. I realise it’s a difficult process, and will take time and is not guaranteed. Due to a change in my circumstances, I sold a lot of my Chanel bags and now only have three - a black classic flap, a small 19 and a Trendy CC. All bags are black. I was going to let one go and get a white classic flap (as I don’t have any summery bags) but I was too worried about the leather going yellow over time, so I’ve abandoned that idea, and at some point I will get a cheaper designer bag to fulfil that need for a white bag.

At the moment, I have my heart set on getting a Hermes Kelly 28 in black, but I need to get rid of one or two of my Chanel bags first to either fully fund or part-fund it, as I’ve promised myself I’m not buying any more bags until I let one go.

Out of the bags I’ve mentioned, which do you think I should let go?

My 19 is my most used bag and I think it’s great for casual outings, but I’m also mindful that it’s beginning to date and that it’s better to sell now rather than later. Would I get more money for it as it is goat’s leather, or does that not make any difference?

The other option is to sell the Trendy or even both of the bags! Then I would only have one Chanel bag (my classic flap), and due to the price increases, I cannot see myself buying any more in future. But would it be worth it for a Hermes?!

Any help, opinions or advice would be appreciated.

I would not sell the CF for sure it is likely to increase in price while new quality is worse than older ones. If you’re not using the trendy a lot I’d suggest sell that one, it is the most similar to a Kelly imo. The 19 if most used I’d not worry about looking dated if you still love it!

Whether it's worth it is up to you!

The fact that you are asking this question here and still thinking about it, tells me you're not quite ready to make that move yet. Which is totally fine, always good to think about it and make sure you're ready part ways, sell, and move on.

If I had multiple Chanel bags, I'd probably do it. My aesthetic has changed over the years and I'm not as into Chanel as I was before. I prefer the more quiet luxury and craftsmanship of Hermes. Alas I only have one CF and even though I rarely bring her out, she'll probably stay. :P

the Chanel and Hermes bags occupy a very different niche in one’s wardrobe. In 2008, when I started with one BBK, I thought I would never go back. While most of my bags are Hermes, one brand doesnt serve all purposes. I would hesitate to sell any bags that you use a lot or classics that you love bc sellers remorse is real. The chanel bags will also be very expensive to buy back. Having said that, if you come to the opposite conclusion, trust your gut instincts. Anyone responding to you here will not know what is best for you more than you do. :)

ETA: It turned out that a BBK, GHW, was not the bag for me. And the two chanel bags I use are not any that I would have thought years ago: an so black mini chevron reissue and a micro stingray boy.

As @880 mentioned, H and C have very different aesthetics that make them difficult to compare. I would have suggested letting go of 19 but since it’s your most used bag, it would be a bit silly to let go.

My suggestion would be to find an Hermes store with display Kelly bags that will let you try them on. After all, as strong as the allure of the BKC might be, they aren’t for everyone in a practical sense.

Trendy CC, not casual as 19, not dressy (and causal vasitle ) as CF
19 as well if get rid of 2 bags, its too risky to keep 19 for long term unless you really like it.

That is my thought exactly. I get a lot of use out of the 19 but it’s more for practical reasons and not really because I love the look of it. I like that it’s edgy but I feel like the 19 and 22 are just trend bags that will not look good years from now. I’m very fickle, and my likes and dislikes for particular bags can change very quickly, so I’m sure in five years from now I won’t love the 22. I often find he chunky chain annoying .

That’s my worry. I would have to replace it with a less expensive casual bag if I ended up selling it.

Agree that the classic should stay even though I often find it boring and a bit too mature because of the gold hardware. The Trendy is my favourite bag. I absolutely love it but it gets very little use. I’m too scared to use it much as it’s quite delicate so it feels silly to keep it.

Being too scared to use a bag to its delicateness defeats IMO the purpose of a bag.
All the bags being discussed are black, so more or less they serve the same purpose or the same fit
(casual to dressy)
I would not buy a bag because the value/quality will increase down the road, I would buy a bag that
is most functional in my lifestyle & wardrobe & makes my heart sing. But that's me
While I do think the Chanel CF is timeless & elegant, if you don't enjoy it for the reasons shared
I'd consider parting with that one. If you can keep the Chanel & fund the Kelly, you are ahead
of the game having 2 pretty serviceable bags.
Frankly, once you have an H bag, especially the Kelly, there is nothing that really compares to it.
It's the very top in luxury, JMO
No one knows you better than you.. we are just sharing our views perhaps based on our own
personal choices.

“Due to a change in my circumstances, I sold a lot of my Chanel bags and now only have three” - also about this just a word of caution, unless you get extremely lucky, live in a place in the world with low Hermes prespend (threads here are very helpful) or have a talent in dealing with people and can easily make an SA favor you, the prespend nowadays required to get a black Kelly 28 is going to be much much higher than any one or even 2 of these bags selling prices combined. Also consider preloved or a Kelly 32 which is not that much bigger than 28 imo. Would hate to see anyone in the position of having sold most or all their beloved bags and no where near being offered a bag in an Hermes store.

Actually just saw you’re likely in the UK. Forget what I said, from my reading I think there is a shot at low to no prespend there. Good luck!
