Selling Chanel for Hermes

If you have to ask you’re not ready to sell. I’ve made multiple selling mistakes over the years.
Me tooo!!! I've sold a 224 grey anniversary reissue back in 2012 ( for 2000 euro!) and still thinking about this bad decision!

Years ago I sold my Chanels and my LV original graffiti collection (had all the bags). I regret selling ALL of them. I should have kept one graffiti speedy, my PNY flaps, my original grey reissue, and my single flap jumbo in caviar. I think if a bag is limited edition, you should think long and hard. If it can be replaced (albeit at a price increase), it would be easier to sell/replace if you change your mind.

For the most part, I haven't looked back. I love my H bags. If I had all the money in the world, it would be a different issue as I liked the bags I sold.

How are you doing financially? Can you save up for the bag? You are on tpf because you love bags. If you are a minimalist you can take a photo of the bag and remember it that way. But you also have an emotional attachment to bags, or else you wouldn't have an account here.

Whenever you get rid of your belongings, you will always get a feeling of satisfaction. That is how our brains work. How good are you in getting over those? If you loose something or think back to what you once had, can you shrug it off or does that bother you? If you sell the bag, you will get money back. If you regret letting the bag go, it will be quite hard to find it again and it will never be the same bag.

Reasons for selling will always be there but we often don't know what we have until it's gone.

I did this already. Last year I sold maybe like 40 Chanel and bought about 30 Hermes including exotics and all that. B/K/C too. I have then sold a bunch of those, kept maybe 15(?) and re-purchased some Chanel (about 10). Hermes is its own thing, for sure, but the 2 just don't compare. Hermes are BAGS/ PURSES, things you schlep around for a decade & wear every day for months on end. Hermes isn't fashion. It's function, quality, luxury, timeless, blending in. Chanel is more fashion, statement bags, stand out, part of your outfit when going to work/ out/ travel, etc. I have equal moods for both (and then the other brands like Dior, Valentino, etc) and thus I really need both in my wardrobe to have a spectrum that encompasses what I'd like when reaching for something. For me, going "all in" doesn't work. I wish it did b/c things would be easier, less overwhelming, less confusing even. But I need variety, personally.

I’m an Hermes girl but wanted a Caviar jumbo with ghw because I wanted a Chanel classic to leave to my daughter along with my Hermes bags. If I were in your shoes I’d sell the current bag and replace with Caviar leather, ghw and the strap drop you truly desire.
The new bag would still serve as a memento of your honeymoon, just a slightly upgraded one (similar to the way a woman might upgrade her diamond) that you’re more inclined to use over time.

This is asked a lot in here... I’m not an Hermes fan at all, so I’d keep the Chanel! Sweet sentimental history to it as well!!

My thoughts exactly. I also find Hermes to be a very casual looking brand. None of their bags look dressy or edgy or anything to me. They might be high quality but I find their designs boring. Chanel has designs which are dressy, edgy, original...

Another vote for keeping the bag !
You might like this bag in future and it is not a style that will ever go out of trend,

plus because it os lambskin you might not end up getting a lot of money back (as compared to caviar) whn you resell.

You seem not to love it, even not to like it. So I would sell it. The memorys regarding your Honeymoon are in your heart, not in your purse. Did you consider to sell it for a caviar m/l with gold hw? It sound like you would like it much more. You would still have a classic in your collection, but it sounds you would like it way more than your curent bag.

I understand this is the Chanel forum so might get biased answers but wanted to see what other chanel enthusiasts would do in my position. Recently got bit by the Hermes bug and am contemplating selling several bags in my current collection to free up space as well as funds for Hermes. One bag that I am having a difficult time deciding on whether to sell is my Chanel lambskin medium flap in silver hardware. I purchased this bag in Capri (at the pop-up boutique) two years ago during my honeymoon so there is sentimental value attached to in, however I NEVER wear it. I have worn it once since purchasing...

Reasons why I don’t wear it
-Silver hardware. I gravitate towards gold. They didn’t have gold hardware available at the time
-Never really liked the strap drop on me
-Prefer the look of caviar with classic flaps

Reasons why I’m hesitating on selling
-Sentimental reasons as above
-Chanel price increases and the possibility one day my tastes will change and I will wear/want this bag again

What would you do? Sell or keep?!
I would sell, I actually did this with some of my chanel bags that I was not using to use the funds to purchase some Hermes bags. I don’t regret it at all. I sold my first chanel bag that I ever purchased and it was the GST in caviar in a beautiful Grey color. Even though that was my first chanel purchase I didn’t use this bag a lot because of the strap length and I never felt comfortable wearing it. Now I still have all my classics and even though I don’t use them as much as I use my other bags. I love them so much that I could not think about selling them. Once you sell some bags and start building your Hermes collection you will feel so much better and not even remember the bags you sold. Good luck on your decision.
