I thought again about that technique matte blanc overlay. At a time, H used this quite frequently, I think, as you said to add dimension to whites, but also to give a 3 dimensional effect on certain patterns. I have 2 cw of Cent Plis and one has this overlay whereas the other has not. I show here the pink/black one. On La femme, this technique is also applied, but very sparsely, e.g. on the hat of the guide and on the shawl of madame as well as on the ox. @lellado you know if H uses this technique still? I can't remember having seen this in recent designs.

Many thanks to @bunnycat for hosting T-Z week. No doubt we are all busy doing something associated with the upcoming holidays, or more likely, MANY things. A scarf that always makes its appearance during the holidays is the lovely Joies d’Hiver by Joachim Metz, brimming with gorgeous details.

This jacquard treasure depicts a wintry scene of Victorian skaters in their fashionable finery. There are not one but two jacquard skater motifs designs and it has the added beauty of matte blanc overlay, a technique that adds paint, often white, for special effects. In this design, the technique is employed for ice and snow (thank you @Ashanti_Rose for providing a definition of matte blanc on another thread in January 2023).

Another gorgeous seasonal scarf is Plumes et Grelots by Julie Abadie. It, too, is a jacquard fabric featuring a holly and berries design - so very pretty. This is my favorite colorway. I don’t own this design and I would love to see some mod shots of those who do own this lovely silk.

Sparkling Apple Punch (from Sur la Table)

For a 1½ gallon beverage jar
Pour the cans of apple juice and the bottle of ginger ale into the beverage jar. Add ice and stir. Add slices of apple on top for decoration.
- 2 (12-ounce) cans of frozen apple juice concentrate, thawed
- 2 liters of ginger ale
- Ice to fill
- 2 sliced apples for decoration

That is indeed amazing, but also sad because it suggests reduction in habitat for these creatures. And not a little dangerous to humans. Wow!
Today is a busy day for me and I am having lunch with my mother’s cousins, two sisters, one 70 and the other 90, so it will be hyggelig. I’m so excited to see them! I know what I am wearing, scarf-wise, but will save for later. I will leave you with this very important decision to ponder. Which wintry or holiday scarf would you pair with this seasonal drink? @HermesEchidna has already shown us one of her choices!
Mulled white wine
Yield:
About 6 cups (6 to 8 servings)
2 teaspoons whole coriander seed
1 teaspoon whole black peppercorns
½ teaspoon fennel seeds
6 whole allspice berries
2 (750-milliliter) bottles dry white wine
1 cup/8 ounces blanc vermouth
¼ cup/2 ounces honey, preferably acacia or a lighter honey
2bay leaves
¼ cup/2 ounces elderflower liqueur
2 tablespoons/1 ounce fresh lime juice
Step 1
In a large Dutch oven or heavy-bottomed pot set over medium-high heat, add the coriander seeds, peppercorns, fennel seeds and allspice. Toast, stirring frequently, until the spices are fragrant, 2 to 3 minutes
Step 2
Add the wine, vermouth, honey, and bay leaves to the pan. Stir, bring to a simmer, then adjust the heat to low and continue to very gently simmer for 30 minutes. Strain the mulled wine through a fine-mesh sieve, discarding the solids and return to the pan. Stir in the elderflower liqueur and lime juice, and serve warm.
(This recipe from Rebekah Peppler was in the New York Times just a couple of days ago and promises to be a “lighter and brighter” version of the traditional drink, given the substitution of red wine for white.)
