This is happening to mine as well.....and it gets me SOOOOO MAD...to pay 1300.00 for a bag..for something to chip! When I saw this I was like I don't think i'll buy andymore Balenciage with handles... I think it's ridiculous!:wtf:

I don't think moisturizing will help this issue. The materials used to do leather edges are acrylic or resin. I know almost nothing about them but I have seen some lovely designer bags with cracked edges. I think a manufacturer needs to do a really good job of matching the flexibility of the edge material to the flex of the leather--if they don't move well together, the edge stuff cracks.

There are leather supply sites that sell edge finish products for leather crafters and repairers. I've never tried any. This is just me speaking, but If my bag were cracking and I knew that Balenciaga might have my bag for months, I'd be tempted to try one of these products. Just a teeny bit to see how it works.

This site has an extensive array of colors for the edge material:

This site has some clear products that I'd consider using to "glue" down and protect my flaking edge:

And I've seen this brand show up a lot on leather crafting/designer forums. They have Edge Enamel and Edge Kote in neutral:

Again, I haven't used any of these products. Just thought this might give some ideas!

Has anyone ever sent a bag bought from Neiman's in for warranty repair? Given how clueless Neiman's SA's usually are (no offense to XoChrissie who is one of the exceptions), how can I expect them to know where to send it or even that there is a way to send it in for repair? I really need to do this for my Blue India Part Time (which has the cracking on the handles as well as damaged whipstitching on one of the handles).

you can see that front small leather piece with the two studs is really shinny like there is a varnish coat on it. shading in second pic, leather texture difference in first pic. i realize that leather textures are never uniformed. but this one is not quite the same somehow.

what bothers me most is the shading and colour difference. the other bits are OK.

any opinion? thanks!

ermm...i'm not sure abt mine as i jus bought like a mth ago...since u have highlighted it, i guess i have to protect the leather with my leather moisturiser recommended by the designer service shop..:)

i spread the bag as wide as i can in the last pic. the colour variation is the clearest here as you can see the leather from the bottom part of the bag as well as the top and the strap piece thingy.

Your pics show what you are describing very well! I had a magenta city that was very well used, and ALL of the leather on it was the way the parts are that you don't like (i.e., the smooth, dull maroon-ish shade). That's exactly why I ended up selling it. I think it is just a combination of usage and UV exposure. I would not hold out much hope that LMB or anyone can restore those parts of the leather to the original magenta shade & shine, unfortunately. Having said that, I think that is a beautiful bag and in much better shape than my bag was.

Hmm. Let me preface this by saying that I'm so not a leather or B-bag expert, but... it almost looks like that part on the top front of the bag has been treated w/ something, maybe a leather moisturizer or something? Although it's not unheard of that the leather on one B-bag can vary from area to area, but the difference here is really dramatic...

Edited to add: I still do love your bag bagpunk! Magenta is one of my faves :)

I am so sorry your are not completely happy with your Magenta Box. I had a used one too that had different shades of leather and darkened handles. I came across a City in brand new condition on ebay, and although I prefer the Box to the City, I bought the City. When it arrived I was STUNNED! The Magenta color and leather when new is absolutely breathtaking. I suggest if LMB can't help the bag, consider letting the Box go and find one to buy in better shape. If you do send it to LMB please keep us posted! Good luck!
