Albums de Colportage
(Albums of catalogue merchandising)

Colportage in French means catalogue merchandising. A sales tool used at a time before photography existed, such catalogues were illustrated with ink drawings sketched and colored by hand. The first Hermés albums introduced the customer to the store’s collection of equipment and accessories for the horse and the rider: bonnets, cockades, saddles, girths, boots, stirrups, bridle bits, travel bags, saddle blankets, whips, horse blankets et al. The products were drawn flat, very simply, but very accurately. Presenting objects of daily use, this was the poetic, artistic equivalent of our catalogues today. These albums were intended for Hermés stores in the French provinces and abroad in order to present its collection to customers who traveled infrequently at the time; they were intended to arouse interest in new objects and to suggest new models. Inspired by documents from the Hermés Museum, the Albums de Colportage scarf revives the beauty of these objects specifically designed for the horse and travel. The unsaddled horse is shown in the center, surrounded by indispensable riding accessories of all kinds. The stylized drawings and their color tints lend modern graphic expression to the scarf while respecting the essence of tradition.

I think the most interesting point here is that the art was inspired by documents from the Hermés Museum.

Fopduck, I'm not aware of a "L'air de Ginza", but please bear in mind that I'm a newbie at this. I do know of a special edition for Hermes Ginza on 27 October 2006 titled "De passage a Ginza". There will be a "De Passage a Tokyo" for Spring/Summer '07 which is similar in design to the "De passage a Ginza".

^^^ You are right! The price tag says "De Passage a Ginza" but the tag on the scarf (actually a twilly) says "L'air de Ginza".

I am still kicking myself for not picking up a full size scarf...:cursing:

^ok, I only buy the 55"/140cm and the 35.5"/90cm (got to stop somewhere :p ), but I have seen the Ginza in the twilly as well. Anyway, you'll be able to buy it in a couple of weeks. It's the same design.

^"De Passage a Tokyo" is for the Spring/Summer '07 collection and will be available worldwide. It's new, wait a couple of weeks, everything should start coming in around end Jan/beg Feb. If you have difficulty obtaining one by middle Feb, just drop me a note and I'll help you get one.

^^I'm puzzled over the title of the scarf. I've seen either 'Caleche' or 'Attelage' but not both on the same line :confused1:

If you post a URL where you've found this title or a picture, would be great help.

Hello, fantastic scarves

^^^Its from a bracelet I bought. The seller said she believed this was the name of the bracelet, and she thought there was a scarf, but she was not sure.... I have not been able to find this image on a scarf, but I have no books, only online to check.

The other part of this is, I understand an "attelage" to be a two horse carriage, and this one is clearly four. so maybe this bracelet has another name????

I really appreciate all your help. Of course if ther is a scarf, I must quest for it!!!
