You refer to the light weight silk twills ? Called a summer twill 140cm ? Which I assume is about the same - maybe not - as the silk marketed today as twill plume on the web site

My experience with other brand light weight silks is as follows. I would not have dared wash an Hermes lightweight silk as much. Even after extensive washing, they never lose all the shine. They may get softer because the sizing has washed but by then they wrinkle a lot. Steaming has no effect other than to get rid of the wrinkles if you do not like them (some do). Steaming will not reduce the shine

A acid bath - vinegar - also helps to soften the scarves, it also supposedly fixes (stabilizes) the colors. It is just a DIY variant on a color catcher.

I do have an Hermes twill lave 140cm - which is no longer marketed , I think? It feels just like 90cm twill. I have no idea what lave was supposed to mean - it may have been acid washed since lave means washed in French

I have an Hermes dip dye 140cm which is yet another type of silk, at least as heavy as 90cm twill, maybe a bit heavier ? and certainly quite soft out of the box, as are the dip dyes in general

There was a 4th type of twill used in 140cms , I think. Some large size carres are marketed as carre geants, without saying anything about the fabric on the laminated tag . The caretag , of course, says 100% silk for ALL of the above scarves, any information about the fabric type is only on the laminated storetg.

Thank you so much for your reply, marietouchet. Very informative! Glad to know that washing wouldn't get rid of the shine. Just have to decide whether or not I want to keep such a shiny shawl.

Thanks Marietouchet and Bostonjetset,

LOL, I didn't mean "goldfish" (although that works); I meant "gold-ish"! Anyway, I get the idea. It is not quite as neutral as yours, Marietouchet, and not as gold as the first pic from you, Bostonjetset. BTW, thanks for the grey sweater; that is just exactly with what I plan to wear it. Now if I can just find one...

Here are the "pantone" "Pepperidge Farm goldfish":

HAHA. I love this pic!
And you are welcome for the sweater pic. Despite the slight differences in the colors depending on the lighting source, this is a very neutral scarf. I wear a lot of navy, greys, olives and browns so this was the Aube colorway that spoke to me the most as the others are all very colorful.

I'm sure you will find one if you keep the look out; this is not really a "grail" design for most people and whilst I think it is fabulous, it does not usually grab a premium when found on the Bay. The neutral colorway does not pop up quite as much as the very colorful ones, but it can be found. Happy hunting!

You outed me , I photoshop my pix usually just brighten them , no messing with color balance , I went a bit too far on this one , a little too ghostly
One of me pet peeves is photos that are too dark , done in the-darkest-corner-of my-closet Pantone palette lol

Regarding sizes of modern scarves, it is easiest to answer by example

Consider a standard silk twill scarf:
the US site says it is 36 in sq
The French site says 90 cm
Well, 90cm is 35.4 in NOT 36 in, actually closer to 35 in than 36 in

What size is it if measured ? That is much tougher than it seems , a scarf does not lie flat , it has folds and you will distort the measurement if you tug on the fabric to smooth out the folds , so, I would believe any answer between about 35 - 36 in or say 89 - 91 cm and you will maybe get a different answer on the 4 sides

Hermes is not good about pesky quantitative stuff like that , they market the scarf as a work of art, not built to drawings with a toleranced size eg 90 cm +/- 1 cm

PS the scarf also does not weight EXACTLY 63 or 65 grams ( cannot remember exact number) - Hermes used that number in its 1980s advertising number is about 40 years old - obsolete - and they have changed sizing many times since then and different sizing will change the weight by 1 gram, and washed scarves - sans sizing - weigh different too

Bottom line - none of the measurement rules (65 gr, , 90cm) work very well

Thanks a lot for the info. I am still learning to use this website. Sorry, if I posted at wrong place.
