Prada Bags: Now Made in China for Italian Made Prices."

I just wanted to shed some light to some of the points on here, and also share my knowledge with you. I have an MBA in luxury branding marketing from GCU london and I just wanted to offer some findings from my final thesis which touched on the subject of fair trading. You will be surprised to know that Italy hasn't established a minimum wage yet similar to that of china, and some workers are paid by factories for less than 0.70 euros a day. So if you have a problem with Prada making a huge amount of profit, I would think twice. I really don't see the problem as you are generally paying for the branding in the first place. Advertising costs, market research, trend forecasting are all huge expenses that go into the company to make the products, what all of you desire. I personally own a mixture of Made in China Prada handbags and Made in Italy handbags and honestly in my professional opinion the quality difference is barely noticeable if not any. Some of you bring up the point that Hermes is still made in France, which is true but the price point of their purses are again higher than Prada, around the high 4 figures to 6 figure range, where as Prada is generally the low 4. Which I also own, and can tell the quality difference again between the two brands.. Anyway these are my thoughts and opinions, any other questions I would be glad to answer

I must confess though, I was relieved and pleased to see my Saffiano tote is Made in Italy
As you say, we are paying for branding and the Prada name to a certain extent (although that isn't the be all and end all for me)........so I expect a Prada bag to be made in Italy as Prada is an Italian brand

What a good thread! Thanks to all of your input. It did put me in a panic as I purchased my Saffiano lux less than 2 weeks ago. Thankfully I found the Made In Italy tag. *phew*

I completely agree that there is very little difference in quality from an Italian made bag & a China made bag these days.i have seen it up close & personal.I don't have a problem with where the bag is manufactured, as long as its quality. I do have a problem with the hypocrisy of an Italian company promoting their Italian brand, hyping the exclusivity of quality in Italian made, price points based on such craftsmanship THEN unbeknown to the consumer outsourcing to China.
Its my understanding that A lot of these companies are still getting around having to tag their items with the made in China tag by having the majority of the item made/assembled in China, and adding handles, hardware, soles in Italy therefore not breaking the law when the made in Italy tag is used. Please note this is what I've been able to gather from articles & books read on the subject. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.
There really is not much luxury, or exclusivity left in designer handbag anymore
just overly expensive ones that have been marketed as such. I guess Hermes still gets a pass it seems, as for the others I can no longer see the point in paying thousands for a mass produced machine assembled bag. Granted better than average materials in some cases, but still the same inexpensive process.I'm still more than willing to pay a few hundred bucks for a quality leather bag regardless of origin but I refuse to pay the added thousands just for the "luxury" name.

I just bought a Prada Nylon Messenger Bag at Neimans (before seeing this thread). I love the bag but out of curiosity went hunting for the tag. Turns out it was made in Italy but I would have loved it either way.
Where did you buy the bag? Word's out that a lot of Prada boutiques are actually cutting out the "made in China" tags. Talk about fraud....
That is terrible. PRADA shouldn't be cutting out the "Made in China" tags at its boutiques. I found the following on Wikipedia.
The requirements for Country of Origin markings are complex and depend both domestic rules permitting the designation 'Made in X', 'Product of X' etc.; and the import country requirements for disclosure.
While many products made within the European Union carry the country of origin label or marking "Made in EU" or "Made in EC", some disreputable manufacturers in European countries that are not part of the EU may use "Made in Europe". A similar marking, "Made for Europe", is used by some manufacturers outside Europe. These vague and sometimes deliberately confusing labels can lead to consumer deception, whereby buyers not proficient in English may come to believe from looking at the label that the non-European product they are interested in is made in Europe. Similar labels are 'Made in/for North America', 'German Designed' - but manufactured and assembled elsewhere, and the infamous 'Made in PRC' label briefly used to disguise the Chinese origin of said product.
It was purchased from a re-seller... before I got to know about this whole fiasco about Prada bags being made in China. In any case, I've scrutinized the interior pocket carefully and there aren't any traces of cut labels like frayed tags etc, if you know what I mean. What is more probable is that there wasnt even a made-in label attached in the first place... until someone can tell me where it is!
You might want to put it on the Authenticate This (Prada) thread above and have it checked out to be certain it's authentic. From there, it's easier to tell you where the tags should be.
