Prada Bags: Now Made in China for Italian Made Prices."

I hate this! Why should manufacturers use imported to describe Made in China products. It is so pathetic that we have developed the Made in Italy or France culture and willing to pay anything to get this stamped on our bags. Lets give the countries a chance and let designers drop their ridiculous prices. Its a rip off, all these high prices for cheap labor.

I wouldn't exactly say cheap labour. I've met people with who supplied designers, not like Prada, but I think they did Kate Spade, the quality requirements and the hoops they have to jump through to get products out can be ridiculous sometimes. BUT, it is indeed cheaper than having them made in Europe.

I don't mind buying things that says "made in china" or made in wherever, as long as the quality is maintained. Of course, it's a bonus for us when they pass the savings onto the loyal customers. Burberry does a great job in differentiating their pricing according to where things are made. My "made in china" Burberry down puffer jacket was 499CAD retail compared to my made in england trench for 950USD at the outlet.

In the end, businesses are out there to make money. they just need to learn not to be so greedy in order to maintain consumer loyalty.

All said, I just checked my Prada purse and it says made in italy.

I don't want to get “yelled” at by anyone, but I did read through this entire thread, all 23 pages of it. This is my general impression of what I read and please correct me if I am mistaken; many of the bags at the Prada outlets are made in China and the tags are deceptively hidden in the lining to create the impression that you are purchasing a product that is made in Italy for a fairly reduced price. Additionally, some of the bags sold in the boutiques or department stores are not made in Italy, but this is primarily the nylon bags and some seasonal bags.

This is my question: Is the bag I did a special order for (BN1844) in the Prada boutique going to be made in Italy? The manager told me that it would take 12 weeks or more to get the bag because of the holiday and the fact that many of the workers in Italy would be off for the month. I also ordered a bag from the Prada website, is this going to be made in Italy?

I also read the book Deluxe, How Luxury Lost its Luster. I am aware that companies, Prada possibly included, may be deceptive in regards to making a bag in China, sewing the handles or some other component in Italy and then skirting past the laws of what is required for a "Made In" label by finishing the product in Italy.

I agree that this procedure is really deceptive and manipulative. It is also wrong to charge inflated prices for products that are not made in places where labor is more expensive and the craftsmanship inferior. This makes me question my future purchases with Prada.

I would also like to point out the following: manipulation of customers of luxury brands takes many forms. For example, I have bought several Chanel bags, all made in Italy, over the last three years. I love Chanel, but the insane price increases over the last few years and the decline in quality is a form of manipulation. Regarding Hermes, they can't be matched in terms of quality, materials, and craftsmanship, but their prices are exorbitant and they pretend their bags are scarce, ala Rolex. I have considered buying a Birkin, but these two things really turn me off, as do their constant price increases. Again, this is another form of manipulation.

I don’t mean to offend any lovers of Hermes or Chanel, because I love these brands too and own many products from these companies. I just want to point out these issues because I feel that they are relevant to issues brought up by this thread. I feel like I am somewhat of a hypocrite because I buy them, but disagree with some of the things they represent.

Wow, this is a really long post. Sorry!

No yelling from me. You've very nicely captured the tone and reasoning for this thread in your post.

I quit Chanel several years ago when they made that press release stating they going to begin pricing their merchandise to a target customer with a minimum 8 figure gross income. That's right 10 million and higher. Sorry Chanel but I refuse to contribute to that elitist bottom line. Sold all my Chanel and haven't looked back.

As for Hermès, they've always been the crown jewel of the luxury goods market so as much as I dislike the price points they offer, as a whole I still consider the majority of their products worth the price. Unfortunately my shrinking income prohibits my frequenting the boutiques any longer. :shrugs:

If I'm going to buy a bag made in China, then by gosh, I'd better be paying China prices for it. This whole thing has turned me off to the brand....
ITA....I haven't and will not buy Prada again....I have switched brands, which is too bad because I LOVED Prada....I moved on to Chloe and I will always love my LV;)

Well, I got turned off but I have to be honest and say I ordered a couple of lux totes from Neiman Marcus and luckily they were made in Italy. I ordered a bag from Prada.com (a second time) and the bag came with the tag cut, just like the first one. I refused to keep it, sent it back and told them why. I'll keep the ones from NM because I truly love them, but if they'd shown up the same way the one from Prada did, I wouldn't have hesitated for a minute to return them as quickly as possible.

I just purchased the Saffiano metal 1M1132 wallet in fuoco a few days ago. I didn't come across this thread till today, and to my disappointment when I checked my wallet, it wrote 'made in china'. Sighh.... This could possibly be my first and last prada purchase.

Just saw this thread and read it through. Very disappointing. I have never been an exclusively Prada buyer but I do like my Prada bags to be made in Italy. While the hidden tags are very sneaky it's more of the insult to us buyers that bother me. Kinda like Prada is pulling a gradeschool "I know something you don't know", Neener neener neener.

Just bought a Vitello Daino Pocket Tote at NM online in October. Haven't used it yet so I just went ruffling through it. Hidden in the depths of the inner pocket is the white code tag and the black tag saying Made in Italy. So it's not concrete that they are hiding just the Made in China tags. They hide the Italy ones also.

I'm not sure it was ever said or implied that only the Made in China tags were the ones being carefully hidden. While this thread has gotten really long, I think I even mentioned early on that I had a new messenger with these small "made in" type tags and it was a Made in Italy that was equally well hidden.

my gosh. did Chanel really say this?!?! I have bought 2 Chanel bags in the past 16 months and I sure don't make anywhere close to that lol

Ugh. Chanel's prices are ridiculously expensive while the quality has declined, it almost makes Prada look like a bargain.

I'm not happy about the declining quality of handbags in general
