I love gardenia too, and own a few different ones. Have you tried Soliflore Gardenia by Dame Perfumery? I have a sample somewhere, and it's definitely a soliflore. It would help to know which gardenia fragrances you have already tried. I'm sure @880 will have some excellent suggestions, and am looking forward to her input.
Hi! The Gardenia I liked the most was Private Collection Tuberose Gardenia. I bought it many years ago, and I really loved it. I then switched to Carnal Flower, so I stopped buying Tuberose Gardenia.

However, I purchased a bottle about one year ago, and it smelled very harsh and synthetic to me. I'm not sure if they changed the formula, or if I remembered the original scent incorrectly.

The other gardenias I tried that were nice, but still a bit too complex were Chanel Gardenia and Gucci Flora.
In my searches for a single note fragrance, I also found one calle Kai, a pure gardenia oil. I found it a bit sharp though.

I have not tried Soliflore Gardenia by Dame Perfumery. I just went to the website, and it sounds wonderful. It's sold out, so that's a good sign!

I will try and find it elsewhere to try. Thank you!

Agree about Chanel Gardenia. It's very nice, as is Estee Lauder's Tuberose Gardenia. VC&A's Gardenia Petale is also lovely, but more of a mixed bouquet than a pure gardenia to my nose. I own and enjoy all three, but the one soliflore gardenia perfume that was very true to the flower was Yves Rocher's Pur desir de Gardenia, which is long discontinued. I haven't tried Piguet's version.

I probably won't pursue sampling Rose de Nuit since I have scaled back on sampling and am trying to focus on the many bottles in my collection, not to mention samples. Tomorrow, I will likely wear my sample of T'aif by Ormonde Jayne, a rose fragrance I recall enjoying when I last sampled it.
Wow... you certainly have a lot of perfume experience!

You and @880 both like Chanel Gardenia. I think I need to try it again.
How would you compare Chanel Gardenia, Tuberose Gardenia, and Dame Soliflore?

Since you have a great nose and also like gardenia, one scent I totally love is this!
I was reading about Jennifer Garner, and the article mentioned she totally loves this oil for the glow to her skin as well as the scent which is what prompted me to try it.

The fragrance is beautiful! I sometimes use this body oil in the summer, and I get asked often what I am wearing or people tell me I smell great. I even emailed Neutrogena and asked the what their fragrance is. Of course they said they do not publish their formulas. If this were made into a perfume, I would buy it!

Chanel gardenia isn’t straight gardenia at all. It’s jasmine, orange blossom, and a host of warm white florals with a base of vanilla, musk, sandalwood. Chanel fragrances IMO are very structured and composed in a very French way. It comes together, but not like a soliflore. However, carnal flower is also a structured green homage to tuberose with multi faceted parts. . . Dominique Ropion apparently says there is eucalyptus and melon in Carnal Flower, but I don’t know if they are listed in the notes, or if my nose is refined enough to distinguish them. . . I have a feeling that if you want a true soliflore or something straightforward, perhaps an Italian approach might yield some results. I don’t know if Santa Maria Novella or Etro have a gardenia.

i just ordered neutragena oil and bath wash. I haven’t used either for many many years lol. Thanks for the reminder
@BigAkoya , my fios speed isn’t cooperating, but if you google neutrogena rainbath nose, you come up with a few interesting but basic threads. One being fragrantica on scents it resembles https://www.fragrantica.com/board/viewtopic.php?id=269485
another being Katie puckric smells. . . Which I cannot open right now.
basically all the big companies give briefs to perfumers to come up with various scents, and if you dig enough, you should be able to find the notes on most beauty products. Will try to run another search when my Fios connection cooperates.

Thanks for the details. I remember now, it's the vanilla I do not like. Vanilla is for ice cream and cookies, not to rub on the skin!:heart:
At least this is good to know and one to cross off... pass on Chanel Gardenia!

@BigAkoya ,

while vanilla is one of the most recognizable notes, it’s sometimes blended to act as a kind of animatic or leather undertone. Or to give body. . . Most famously, the artificial vanilla in either jicky or Shalimar, I forget which
see, this link : https://kafkaesqueblog.com/2020/12/23/guerlain-jicky-modern-parfum-history-old-legend/

at any rate, it’s not always the candy sweet vanilla of modern gourmand fragrances

I personally am not fond of gourmand vanilla, but occasionally I will wear something with a bit of tonka
(which probably makes me a hypocrite lol)

ETA: with the changes in IFRA Regulations (banning the use of many perfume components due to allergens), all modern commercial fragrances (over 80% of the worlds fragrances) have had to be reformulated. Guerlain and other large houses developed synthetics (most importantly for oak moss) but the fragrances themselves were altered, some beyond recognition.

SMN has both Gardenia, and Rosa Gardenia. I haven’t tried them, but they might be good. Their mughetto (lily of the valley) and tuberosa are both gorgeous.

@Purses & Perfumes
I’ve tried MFK A La Rose-whilst I Do prefer a soliflore, I didn’t find it “full” enough..maybe I need to try the rose perfume (was it “Une Rose”) which @880 compared to a rich burgundy instead..

I’m aware other perfume houses have bespoke scents-although I’m planning to move back to London(where I was born and grew up), I’m outside Central London for family reasons atm, and go every few months for shopping trips, so it’s not that easy to coordinate.

I’m considering a carafe of Roses on Ice next.

Has anybody tried Mille et Une Roses?
I can’t remember who it’s by-Harrods sell it..

Lancome???

As a rose-y fragrance collector, I have a significant amount of rose-y scents. But niche perfumery is my interest.
Yes I think you’re right..

I literally am so niche I’ve stuck to the same scents my whole life, and today started Whats probably my last bottle of YSL Paris, so looking for a lush rose fragrance to replace it in my repertoire..

I’m going to Harrods just after Christmas , so may wait and go to the 6th floor there..although the store will be manic in January.(Usually the 6th floor is a little more civilised).

Last time I sampled MFK A La Rose, but was disappointed..but don’t want to spend £50,000 having my own MFK rose fragrance , although I’m sure it would be wonderful!

I’ll read everybody else’s (including yours, as you’re a rose aficionado ) recommendations , and go with a list, and hopefully come home with a new rose scent..thank you for all of your help so far!

I prefer Bulgarian rose over Turkish-I still have the tiny sample of Bulgarian rose Otto gifted to me by the U.K. Chanel “nose” years ago-but that’s a note, you can’t just wear that exclusively..

When I have time I’ll research the perfumes in your very kind extensive list and see which are the ones most likely to be of interest-or just try as many as possible.

Henry Jacques perfumes look lovely and I definitely wouldn’t be averse to trying their rose perfume..
