Hello ladies, I see you have all been busy ordering samples. :smile: Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on them.
Regarding Calligraphy Rose, I had a decant a while back, and really enjoyed the scent -- rich and layered. The notes do not list oud, but I thought it had a bit of oud in there. I debated on buying a bottle but since I already had a bottle of Aramis Calligraphy Saffron, I decided to pass. Seems like it's discontinued?

Regarding Serge Lutens roses, there's also Sa Majeste la Rose, which is more on the soliflore side of things with rose, some greenness, and a touch of honey in the base. I am very curious to try Rose de Nuit.

Also, for the rose lovers here, I was wondering if anyone has tried Lancome Mille et Une Rose? I was idly watching an auction where that one started low, but got bid up quite a bit (the older version) much to my surprise.

I used this site as well. I ordered 30 samples from 3 sites. A lot of homework to do!!!

30! Nice! One scent every day for a month! I imagine it will be so much fun trying them on. And with that variety you're almost sure to find a few you love.

Thanks for the info on Calligraphy Rose. Scent Split has decants of Calligraphy Saffron...

I haven't tried Mille et Une Rose.

I love both Lutens roses, but Rose de Nuit is definitely my favorite of the two. Majeste is brighter, greener, fresher, really goes white floral and a little powdery on my skin. I would describe Rose de Nuit as a deep, dark rose. It is more musky, less white floral on me. It has more of a true rose scent my skin than the floral mix of Majeste. Nuit has the best musky/sweet dry down. The rose never dissipates on my skin, it just softens a bit. Sometimes rose scents tend to smell...old fashioned, or grandma...sorry to any grandmas lol I don't mean to offend, my oldest son is 24 so I'm old enough to be a grandma! Rose de Nuit is definitely not a grandma's rose. It's dark and sexy, but sweet at the same time. Man, I love it so much I can smell it right now and I don't have any more. Its the best rose I have smelled to date. Whatever that's worth. :crybaby:

Sometimes, for special date nights without kids, I would layer a bit of Muscs Kublai Khan with a bit of Nuit. So fabulous. If I had to chose a scent to wear all the time, it would have to be those two layered. Dang y'all, now I have to go order some decants.

I did find a 5ml decant of Guerlain Cruel Gardenia I had only used once, thought I hated it, forgot about it. Yesterday I wore it and I can't figure out what I hated about it before. I haven't used it since soon after it came out, so it's been a while. I actually can't believe it isn't icky by now. I wore it again today!

:angel:

Did you try the Cruel Gardinia in a different season before? Some scents just seem to do better in certain seasons. ex. Hypnotic Poison seems a bit heavy on a hot summer day, and just right from mid-fall to early spring. And Orange Sanguine just doesn't seem to hold up in the winter months, but is so delightful in warmer weather. Other perfumes seem :biggrin: year round; or :sick: year round.

It's been so long since I used the CG that I have no idea the season. Before I put it on yesterday I was thinking that before I thought it was too powdery on me. Sometimes a little powdery is ok for me, but for the most part heavily powdery scents suffocate me.

I know exactly what you mean about Perfumes and seasons, though. SL A La Nuit is one I love that doesn't work on hot days. Honestly, unless I only use a tiny bit, it is overpowering on a cool day. I feel like it's in everyone's face from 10 feet away when I wear it, but sometimes I just have to accept that, and everyone around me will just have to suffer :yucky:

Ohh, just found this lovely thread.

As a 50+ Old World, red-hat "gal", I have a few really archaic classics and a few more modern fave scents in my wardrobe, which is quite small:

- "Vol de Nuit" EdP 30 ml, Guerlain (yup, the classic little propeller-and-stopper bottle), for very special nights, job interviews, book presentations, and "I mean business" events;
- "Byzance", original from 1980s, Rochas, also a tiny flask. For wild nightclub parties in smokey establishments;
- "Escale à Parati" and "Escale aux Marquises", both Dior, both 2015; light, spicy, likely unisex carefree scents, for travel and summer;
- "Après l'Ondée", Dyptique, a tad heavier than the Diors above, green, vetiver-ish, but not as strongly so as the Guerlain;
- "Soleil", Fragonard (the big bottle with the radiating golden sun as a stopper): very fruity, groumand, warm and sexy. Perfect summer-on-an-island indulgence - but just a drop at a time!
- "Eau de Charlotte", Annick Goutal, green-gourmand (blackcurrant, cocoa and mimosa), for autumn outdoor days;
- "Valentino Uomo" (the black bottle men´s fragrance by V), actually a warm skinscent, coffee + gianduja + leather mix that I love both on myself and on my BF;
- "Cuir de Nuit", by Yves Rocher; I still mourn "Venice" was discontinued decades ago. I´m usually not into cheap fragrances, but this combo of leather, cocoa, coffee and pepper is so soothing, snuggle-worthy, I often reach for it and combine it with other scents, like several ones from La Maison de La Vanille (esp. Vanille Noir du Mexique and Vanille Sauvage de Madagascar).

Trying to get my hot little paws on a sample of Guerlain´s very limited Shalimar Millésime Vanilla Planifolia now.

LOL, yes, talking about perfumes somehow usually leads to a few new sampling possibilities! I might end up ordering samples of Rose de Nuit at some point, but right now, I have a rule that I will finish 5 samples before ordering a new one. I do have quite a back-log of samples and decants to get through.

Most fragrances hold up quite well for many years, so I am not surprised your Cruel Gardenia is still good. However, you are lucky it didn't evaporate. I lost several decants to evaporation including Fille en Aiguilles and vintage Chanel No. 22 to name a few. These days I don't order decants unless I think I will finish them quickly.

@Pimpernel, Vol de Nuit in that propeller bottle is one of my favorites! And I recall smelling Byzance in that round, blue bottle long ago and thinking it was beautiful, but don't really remember how it smells since it has been a while since I smelled it.

I am constantly being late. I find out some interesting scents for me and they seem to be discontinued, unfortunately. Another side of my collecting is my wish to have something special. I know many Luten's rose-y scents and Malle's as well but I prefer Shiseido for the Japanese market.

I really skipped some scents, a pity of course, but I found their dupes.

Guerlain Rose Nacree du Desert (dis) vs Boadicea Rose Saphire, the second is more intensive but 90% similar
Aramis Calligraphy (dis?) vs Boadicea Blue Saphire --- I have read but I haven't compared yet, that's why I bought a sample of each

Gucci Rouge vs Clive Christian X

I am very open to new scents and perfumers. I have some favourite of mine as Luca Maffei and Christophe Laudamiel, the last name is not for new comers in perfumery, as his scents are rather complicated.
I wouldn't have loved Fueguia 10 years ago, as my taste was rather simple. Nowadays the brand is one of my favourite.

I´ll try take a pic of my tiny collection with VdN at the front - it came in a very funny zebra box.

Here´s the Fragrantica page about Byzance, with several reviews from users, and this description (mind I don´t have the new 2019 version but the 1980s, so I agree with the oriental-floral, I get no citrus or pear, but I get rose, heliotrope, mild vanilla and strong aldehydes and spice, which the new 2019 lacks, apparently): "Byzance is an oriental-floral composition that begins with a luminous accord of pear and citrus. The intoxicating floral bouquet at the heart of the composition includes notes of rose, freesia, and heliotrope, placed in a warm base of vanilla and musk."

The samples I ordered arrived. Unfortunately Byredo didn’t work for me, just like Jo Malone too fresh/clean/herb-y.

I really liked Kilian Angel’s share but in the way you like a sweet smell coming out of your kitchen, I wouldn’t probably wear it.

I ended up purchasing a full bottle of Montale’s Intense Cafe as that was a very interesting scent that wasn’t similar to anything I own or have smelled before.

I also ordered Kayali Vanilla 28, I think it would work as a layering scent as I’m all for vanilla and gourmand scents.

I’ll spend the next couple of weeks testing all my new perfumes before trying anything new!

I have left a few bottles accessible like Dzing, Mitsouko, and my favorite SL & Chanel decants, just for the rare times I was able to wear, like special occasions/dates and nights out, but kept most of my full bottles and samples in my closet. A few of my samples in the 1ml vials did evaporate, but it was ones I didn't care for.

My boxed vintage Jicky and Chanels made it though, thank goodness! did think my Gardenia had more left. I'm not sure if it evaporated or if maybe I finished it up and just don't remember.
