Hello, and welcome! I enjoyed reading through your post, and look forward to hearing more of your impressions as you rediscover old perfume favorites and explore new ones. I have a few Serge Lutens scents, and my favorites this year have been Un Lys and Borneo 1834. As for patchouli, it did not rank as my preferred note for a while, but I have come to love a few scents with patchouli -- Chanel Coromandel, Borneo 1834 and also Portrait of a Lady.

Leather is a note I have explored off and on, and I actually found that I enjoy vintage leather compositions like Miss Balmain and Gres Cabochard. There was a great discussion on leather a few pages back in this thread. Chanel Cuir de Russie is on my wish list. Maybe I will get it next year.

Ooh I forgot about Coromandel! I haven't tried Miss Balmain or Gres Cabochard, will add those to my list!

love some of your picks! Wanted to suggest Feminite de Bois (the original one by Sheseido) probably available now by decant.

Hi @Kimbashop, if you want a well blended, balanced rose Perfume, FM Une Rose. I think of Une Rose as the white burgundy of rose fragrances, and I swear I can almost taste a wine accord in there. For a darker rose, I love POAL, but also wear Amouage Lyric Man; the original (now vintage) Voleurs des Roses, and vintage (perhaps available by decant) larte di gucci EDP

apologies for my spelling which has gotten even worse since covid.

I like rose, but I'm picky about it. The Lutens are they only two predominantly rose scents I've tried that I really love. Une Rose sounds like I might want to give it a try. I've never tried any FMs.

I also have a fairly limited selection available, so decants are my only way to try a lot of the fragrances.

I actually love how it works out with decants. Spraying something on one time at the store doesn't always help much. Sometimes I need a few days of adding a scent to my daily routine to decide if I like them. Like the Coco Madamoiselle, sometimes at first whiff I love something but can't handle the dry down. Then there are scents that I want to hurry and get to the middle or bottom notes. It's great being able to really think on something before spending $$$. I don't know if the place I used to order decants from is still in business. Will be checking that tonight!

Thank you for the suggestion! I went looking for Feminite du Bois original by Shiseido this evening (such a unique bottle), but wow, there are not many of them. Will also check out the decant places. Seems like there's more of the newer Lutens versions around though. L' Arte di Gucci is on my watch list too, lol.
I know what you mean about spelling getting worse since covid. I think I have also gotten more absent minded over the last year or so...

@mariliz11, welcome and enjoy! What are your favorite scents? As you've probably already discovered, perfume collecting can be quite mesmerizing...

I have been searching my favorite SLs since posting here, and I mostly keep finding scents I've never heard of. I have found a couple I want to try though.

agree re sampling via decants. I used to wear a lot of the older Lutens, but I forget which lutens have prominent rose accords (omitting of course ones like fumerie turque which doesn’t read as a rose in my mind at least) filles des berlin? I think the FM style is very different. An analogy might be FM is more structured (Imagine a fragrance pyramid with a distinct evolution) as opposed to the sensual kind of gourmand, sweet orientalist bois with Amber, leather, resin, and powder finishes.

i used to order from Surrender to Chance

Thanks! I think my perfume profile leans towards sweet, gourmand, creamy & vanilla notes with a long silage. My current favorites are YSL Libre intense, MFK Gentle Fluidity, Baccarat Rouge and Kilian Rolling in love.

When I’m not able to test a perfume I’m interested in (sold out or not in store) I have found that trying a designer type perfume helps. There are stores that replicate the scent (not copying the brand name though) and for a fraction of the price I can see if I like it or not for a while before purchasing online the actual one

Decants would be an even better option but unfortunately I haven’t found an online or physical store where I live

I always ordered from the Perfumed Court, after some googling I see Patty and Lisa split to start Surrender to Chance. Interesting. Much has happened in the decant world since I've been away. I'm happy to see both sites are still in business, and also that Perfume Posse is still around! I had forgot all about Perfume Posse.

I'm so glad I wandered out of the handbag forums! I hadn't realized just how much I have missed sniffing things lol. I can't wait to find some old favorites and try some new things.

Not sure where you are located, but I used to have decent luck with decants and samples on ebay. Depending on where you are the shipping costs could outweigh the benefits of purchasing such small amounts.

I'm not sure where to even find scents/stores like you describe.

We do have Sephora and Ulta now, so I'm a little better off than I was before.
