Moynat has recently experience two changes that will affect their creative direction — Knightly’s departure and a strong new demographic — a demographic with $$$$$ that loves the Gabrielle clutch and the Gabrielle. I’m excited to see if Moynat’s creative direction embraces styles like these.

I think specific bags will be made in France, but thanks to LVMH taking over, most will be made in Italy (or Spain) in LV factories.

A friend schooled me about excellent (non-chipping) black hardware. How it’s made is amazing. I hope Moynat chose infused black hardware and didn’t go the way of old-school, YSL and cheapest-manufacturing-possible Chanel plated hardware. I’ll try to find out and post here if I get a reply.

I, too, love the blackout look.
I remember Hermès not attaching the strap rings for the So Black Kelly when it was released, because of that exact chipping issue.

Do we know more about Knightly's departure? Was it ever announced publicly, and is there a replacement? It all seems very hush hush, considering there was a lot of press when Knightly took over Moynat.

I know a wee bit about his departure. I’ll say one word — Ugh! :whut:
I haven’t heard about a replacement, but (supposedly) 2024 will bring design newness. Moynat’s upper management (LVMH era) is finally listening to clients’ opinions on the latest designs, and we backed up our opinions with our wallets. I hope LVMH and Jr. don’t mess up again.

A little bit more info, please? I do not know how to interpret "Ugh! :whut:"

I don't know if that ugh was good or bad. Can we have two words? :D

So far for 2024 what I need is a Kelly-style (handle and shoulder strap), canvas and barenia bag that is bigger than the mini Kelly, and I think a Gabrielle PM canvas fits exactly that. If I get that I will be happy.

+1 on liking more info on your "ugh" @Sourisbrune - whatever you can share would be appreciated.

I have been away from buying Moynat for so long now that your comments @allanrvj really made me think. Personally I am totally fine with never needing another "Kelly-style" bag - I have realized the huge benefits of cross-body and shoulder bags that were designed from the onset to be worn that way. The Kelly, much as I love the ones I still have, just isn't really great beyond hand-carry. It's boxy, etc. The Gaby seemed initially to me an excellent modern compromise but I eventually rehomed them. The lock was always a bit fiddly (similar to Kelly) and the strap is narrow and dug into my shoulder. And the shape is, even though softer than Gabrielle and Rejane, also a bit boxy and doesn't "hang" all that well when worn cross-body IYKWIM.

Still I am looking forward to seeing where the company goes now. There are obviously enormous assets in their craftspersons, sales professionals, tannery relationships, etc. The key will be having the right CD and execs to shepherd it to the next phase without marching towards turning it into a niche mini-LV.

Thanks for the comments about using the Gaby as a crossbody bag. I was hoping that might be the answer to my eternal question but apparently not. The search continues with hope that the new CD will have some ideas.

Also curious about Knightly’s departure; there doesn’t seem to be much in the way of official info; I’d like to hope that there will be a different design direction….

From what I gather, there’ll be no gift exchange at Christmas. :wtf: Knightly’s designs didn’t do as well as expected. Moynat clientele mourned Ramesh era designs.

LVMH had a vision (to grow the brand/make it less artisanal). Those who didn’t share the vision left. In comes Knightly, eager to lead Moynat down their new path. Well, we clients, for the most part, didn’t like where it was going. Bosses don’t fire themselves so … I’m sure y’all can figure it out. Not a fairytale ending. :frown: Equal blame in my eyes. Not every little company needs to be ruled heavy-handedly by a major corporation. Some of us love little luxury brand artisanal bags.

As for H Kelly bags v. Moynat Gabrielle bags, I agree with Bagnut1. The Kelly tends to be a little too fussy for my liking. Irl, the Gabrielle is gorgeous. And the colors :girlsigh:!!!!

Don’t give up on Gaby yet. Try it out at the boutique. I love my Gaby PM.

I realized this year that I really like carrying bags by the handle, and I also really like the option to carry it momentarily crossbody if ever I need both my hands. And the Kelly seems to fit that bill but it looks so incomplete/unkempt when the straps are undone, and it’s just the turnlock keeping the bag closed. Compared to the Gabrielle where there’s no straps, just that M lock.

I wanted to love JD’s Diane but the excessive hardware is not my cup of tea. Maybe I’ll change my mind if they come up with a barenia-toile version.

Hi everyone!

I've been a long time lurker of this thread and I really enjoyed reading all your threads!

I just received my first Moynat yesterday (a Rejane!) Anyway, I really wanted to see your aged versions of Moynat! I would be really grateful if you could share pictures of your old Moynat. I'm so curious about how the leather and hardware ages over time with such great quality!

I'll share pictures of my own soon! <3

To add to your comment — H says to keep the sangles secure in the turn lock (for reinforcement) whenever closed. Without them, the weight of the bag may cause excessive wear on the locking mechanism. Having to undo the whole closure (every time) would be annoying to me. I love the Kelly and had always wanted one until I tried it on and repeatedly practiced the open and close routine.

I like top handle bags with crossbody straps, too. The Gabrielle would be incredible for hand carry, but the strap is too short for me to wear crossbody. The Diane is lovely. The strap is crossbody length. I’m also looking forward to its future leather choices. Their Tempo leather, a bit like the Gabrielle’s leather, is perfect for my city’s climate. I’m crossing my fingers.
Both are beautiful bags!:girlsigh:

I have dealt with handles on no-handle crossbody bags with a twilly (Jypsiere and Diana messengers function well this way). I've also recently been using my Gucci Aphrodites with just the long crossbody strap (no handheld options this way) and have gotten used to it.

I don't mind handles and crossbody straps worn together, it's just that so many bags feel hard/sharp if they are top handles with a rigid bottom. Metier has done a brilliant design fix for this by slightly curving the bottom inwards in the middle so it rests comfortably against your body when worn that way.

But perhaps my real issue is that the classic sorta old-lady look of a Kelly or similar was fine until I started to become an actual old lady. Now I seem to want a younger vibe. ;)

ITA the Diane!

I would personally prefer it either to have the metal engravings on the side or the nice metal clasp by itself only

Having both seems a bit overdone. That said, the silhouette is still v v elegant!

Even though I am in my jammies, I decided to grab two pictures for you as I love my M bags so much. One is of my Gabby BB and the other is my Quattro. I also have a wallet, but it's in my purse downstairs..and like I said jammies...but can post picture of that gem tomorrow. Here is the history: My Gabby is a BB and I got it at the Moynat store at Selfridges in 2019 as I was going to the Bafta awards and, of course, needed a perfect black bag for the evening. This is my go-to bag for going out as I just love it. The lock can be a bit fussy, but it's worth it. The other bag is my Quattro which I bought used in 2022. This bag is a workhorse and I tend to grab it often. Both bags are aging VERY well and still look great. I am hard on my bags when I use them and also baby them storage wise (the Gabby needs a bit of cleaning I think). Sorry for the awful pictures, I am terrible at taking photos of my bags. I blame my phone...LOL

I literally just received it and I'm so stoked and impressed by its quality!

I was completely influenced by Charles Gross (yes ,I am weak) I saw his rejane bb in tourterelle and its the absolute perfect site, colour combo and style for me!

I would absolutely love to see your pics of how your Moynats aged over time so do share it with me!
