Honestly, they would take it back, but it's kind of crappy of you to do that. When you wait that long to return things, they probably can't even sell it anymore. Yes they have an outlet they could maybe move it to, but give me a break it's not nordstrom's fault you bought something too small and then kept it for 1.5 years..so rediculous. Reminds me of the lady i saw bring back completely used perfume bottles and say she didn't like it anymore and try to get her money back. If pekople take advantage all the time nordstrom is going to change their policy from losing so much money and everyone will be mad because legitamate returns will be impossible.

and what about the salesperson who works hard for their commission. you know that if you return they lose their commission, right? how would you feel if you worked hard to sell all the time and put yourself out there, got your paycheck and then 2 years later all of that commission you earned was subtracted from your next paycheck? ...pretty inconsiderate to everyone.

She is following Nordstrom's policy, period.

First off, many of you are arguing that Nordstroms loses out because they can't sell the item at full price when it is returned a long period later. We don't know if she (or others who return much later) paid full price. I never pay full price. For all you know, she got it on sale at 60-70% off, returned it at that price and they sent it to the outlet store at 40% off making a profit or at least break even at 60-70% off. Second, you are making the assumption that the item would have been bought by someone else if she had not bought it originally. Again, we don't know that anyone would have bough that coat - MANY items go on sale or are sent to the outlet because they were not bought originally. Finally, Nordstrom and other department stores severely mark up items to account for losses like this.

If you don't like their policy, don't shop there. I won't shop at stores that have final sales unless I am 100% sure about the item. I will shop at Nordstroms and Bloomies over Saks and NM because they have more lenient return policies. You have that same right. But don't get mad at other people because they follow the policies of the store they shop at.

she purchased it online, so no one would be losing commission here. it wasn't used and the tags are still attached.

Ok, why do people keep saying the tags were attached? OP clearly stated that she did NOT have the original tags and no tags were attached. However, she had the receipt.

I don't care one way or another, but just wanted to clarify the whole tag issue.

this is Nordstrom's policy. So if they don't have an issue with it, neither should the customer!

Return on, ladies!

I saw some return something purchased in 1999 a few weeks ago! I was STUNNED. But they handled the return as if she purchased recently. She had her receipt, too!

Whoa!!!!! Doesn't bug me, but that is just unbelievable. I couldn't have gone through with that. Just WAY too out there!!!

OP didn't break any rules. Nordstrom is known for letting their customers return items freely. Again, if the store doesn't have a problem with it, I don't see why anyone else would.

My thoughts exactly. I know many have opposition to their return policy, but they have a return policy for a reason. Someone in their corporate office thought it out well, and chose to have a lenient policy. That is their choice, and if they don't have a problem with it, then no one else really can either.

coming from someone that worked at nordstrom's...i sincerely believe people abuse their return policy. being as though we worked on commission - our paychecks take a hit with returns. no matter how long ago it was from. i think they need to fix that.

i understand that her purchase was online. but that crap happens in the stores too.

I think that a good way to remedy this would be to say that if they return it after say.... 3 months or so, that it doesn't take your commission. Because honestly, it really shouldn't at that point.

this is why i shop at nordstrom. i frequently buy items-on sale-not sure if 100% like it and then never use it or wear it. but i can still return it.

if those who work at Nordstrom have a problem wit the return policy--maybe you should work somewhere else.

i keep way more than i return. i value having that option and great sales associates. nordstrom knows that that is how they can keep customers coming back

I agree. They wouldn't have the policy if they didn't want to deal with this stuff.
Not to mention I am a pretty independent shopper and I rarely use an SA for assistance, which means I'm not taking away any commission.

IA.

i only have one for shoes. i do most of my shopping online bc im too lazy to drive to the store/try stuff on, etc.

so who is this mythical sales associate im hurting? the computer system?

and as a sales associate--this is the nature of the business you are in. it's like a garbage collector realizing that garbage sometimes smells. i'm going to be entering a client oriented field [law] and when you deal with people you deal with their fickleness. it's just part of the job. of course you can complain about it--esp on here--but i don't think it's wise to suggest that Nordies change their policy since that is actually a cornerstone of their corporation. it is what defines and differentiates Nordstrom from other stores.

how many times do people complain about stores not accepting items they did not use?

it shouldn't be an issue of "finding somewhere else to work" the company should be accomodating to both customer and employee. I mean it is US selling the stuff not any of the brothers running Nordstrom. Unless you have personally experienced this one can't fully understand.

like i said before their return policy is abused. i'm not sure why someone would keep something for so long and then want to return it. They would complain if they purchased something that someone did the exact same thing with and its not "brand new". Folks dont want your stuff that sat in the closet for months. Common courtesy, atleast return in a reasonable amount of time. i dont even work there anymore but i know how it feels. ok i'm done.

ETA: and regarding the SA and commission statement. Their system is designed to require a employee number. regardless if they helped you or not. a number HAS to be entered to complete the transaction. so if months down the line you return and that person still works there. they paycheck will be hit.
