Nordstrom Return Policy Thread!!

If Nordstrom's changes the return policy, I think there will be some very unhappy customers.

I think their return policy is great, sometimes almost too good to be honest. But, I like the idea that if I need to return something I can.

I like that the SA's are very helpful (almost all of them anyway) and go out of their way to help. That is one reason why I like shopping there!

Hello, lovely TPF-ers!

I know Nordstrom has a "discretionary" return policy, wherein they have no set time limit by which you have to return an item, but it is up to the sales associate's discretion whether or not to accept the item for return.

I bought a trench coat online from the Nordstrom website almost a year and a half ago, but I have never worn this trench coat in all the time that I've owned it, as it's too small for me in the bust area. The reason I kept it, though, is because my sister owns the same trench coat, though in a different color, and I thought it was "cute" to own matching trench coats.

Well, I'm currently doing some massive spring cleaning of my closet, and have decided that I won't keep items that I don't wear, no matter how "cute" or "sentimental" the item is to me. Hence, I am letting go of this trench coat.

I have debated putting this item up on eBay for sale, but I figured I would first ask the advice of our seasoned TPF-ers - do you think I should even bother trying to return this item to Nordstrom, even though it's been a year and a half since I purchased it? The item is new, but it doesn't have its tags attached. On the other hand, since I did purchase the item through Nordstrom's website, I have a copy of the "invoice". Ultimately, I would just like to get back as much of my money as I can.

Thanks in advance, lovely TPF-ers!

1st - it's not up to the Sales Associate to accept your return (they don't set Nordstrom policies). If you encounter such problem, you need to contact the department or store manager.

Since you purchased it and never worn and you have the invoice, you can take it back for a full refund.

Thanks for correcting me! This is my first time (potentially) making a return to Nordstrom, so I'm not up-to-date on proper procedure regarding returns. :smile1:

if Nordstrom takes it back...why not.
but i would feel weird after 1.5 years to take it back.....

Yeah, that's the thing - I feel weird too. But it's either try to return it, or sell it on eBay. After hearing all the horror stories about eBay on TPF, I'm a little wary about going that route (although this isn't a very expensive trench coat, so I'm probably being overly paranoid).

I guess, ultimately, there's no harm in asking/trying, except for a bit of potential embarrassment to myself. :p

I buy stuff all the time from nordstrom. I bought some boots last year during the anniversary sale, and I just returned them this last weekend. I had never worn them and they were still in the box. The timing doesn't matter. As long as you know approx. when you bought it and if you have some type of receipt or invoice.. they'll return it for you. I've never had a problem.

Nordstrom probably will accept the return. I once returned a dress to Nordstrom after a year. It was unworn with the tags still attached, but I no longer had the receipt. The SA was extremely friendly and issued me a store credit via gift card without any problems at all. Good luck!

If the tags were attached, along with the transaction sticker, you could have gotten a return in the same method you paid--e.g., cash or credit card. If you paid with a credit card but didn't have the tags, the SA could have ran your card through the system and found the transaction that way.

they won't embarrass you.. If you feel really uncomfortable, take your return to customer service.

Oh, I didn't mean that I think they would embarrass me. I was talking about getting over my own embarrassment at returning a 1.5-year-old item. :smile1:

Thanks everyone for the lovely advice and encouragement! I will try to return the item tomorrow; we'll see how that goes. :p

Question: The credit card that I used to purchase this item has since expired, but I have a new credit card that was issued by the same bank to replace the expired one. Will this be an issue?

just explain it to them, they will probably ask if you'd like cash back instead..

It should be fine (I think the new cc has the same number as the old one, and it shows up as the same account), but if you don't feel comfortable you could always ask for a store credit.

Yep, you're right. The SA offered to issue a credit to my debit card, but I asked for a store credit because I knew I would be shopping again soon. :D

So glad to read this! I bought a pair of shoes at Christmastime, they just don't fit right and have been sitting in the box w/the receipt for a few months. I thought it was too late to return but now I won't feel bad

I worked at Nordstrom and they have an amazing return policy. I have bought shoes that I though would work for a special occasion, but never ended up wearing them. I returned it at least 6 months later. When I returned them, the guy tried to sell them back to me at the hugely discounted sale price. I figured if I hadn't worn them in 6 months, even at a great deal I probably wouldn't wear them.

If you don't have the original card that the coat was purchased on, you can always get a gift card with the amount on it.
