new rule - no Kelly or birkin to walk ins??

A while back one of my friends was at the Hermes store in Vancouver and she saw a 30cm Crocodile Birkin in the window and told her SA that she wanted it. SA told her that it was display only but she wasn't going to take NO for an answer and said that she wouldn't leave without the bag. (she is a loyal customer at Hermes, with 4 birkins and 3 Kelly bags) The SA finally gave in and sold it to her so anything you see in the store is for sale.

Wow! I'm not sure if certain displays are the same in Paris as in the US or Vancouver, but in Paris I was told that some displays were demo models and not made up to the normal standards as the bags for sale.

Knowing the effects sunlight and harsh display lighting has on regular leather and exotics, I don't think I would want a piece from the window display! I think you are right as that is the rule, but there are always exceptions it seems :p

Hi Im new to this forum and I am looking for a birkin - I do have contacts at hermes through friends and family who have purchased numerous birkins but where is the most cost effective place to purchase one?

I would say the most cost-effective depending on the exchange rate is in Europe. Taking conversion into consideration for the US, you can buy a B35 for about $8000 after VAT return where as it is $11,300 in the US after taxes. But, that is assuming you can even get your hands on one and there would be limited choices on what is available. If you want your choice of color/hardware, it's best to establish a relationship where you live and go from there.
Hope that helps.

Yeah any of the Bags that they get at the Vancouver store aren't demo models.
I think the only stores that have demo models are in Paris because there are many people looking to buy and order them so they want to see what they are like.

That's definitely the case at FSH--my DH was told that window bags often aren't finished inside (no lining, pockets, etc.). But I know at Madison, for example, people have been able to reserve and purchase bags once they came out of the window displays, so the "faux" bags may only be at the Paris location(s).

ETA: Tinklemd, are you a urologist or nephrologist? :D

Yes still can walk in & it's all by luck. DH walked in an US H boutique by himself for the first time a month ago & was offered a club B35 GHW. Turned down because 35 is too big for me. Back in March I was in FSH the first time, on second day & got my K28 box sellier. Just keep your hope high! Good Luck!

ceci, i wish i had been into birkins when you posted about this. i am now dying to find the etain club b35!

but to answer the OP's question, yes, I too got lucky just walking into the waikiki boutique for my first b35 in december of 2012! i believe it's all about being in the right place at the right time and being persistent in visiting any H boutique that you happen to be near.

I was wondering the same thing!!

for those who got their dh/bf/etc to ask for one and got it, did they just go in and straight up ask an SA? going to use this tactic when going to lv/san diego/bev hills LOL.

I've seen this tactic backfire big time at my boutique, which gets tons of tourists. The men usually look like deer in the headlights and totally out of their element and they just blurt out a request for a B/K, which often sounds closer to a demand. I don't think they are trying to be rude, but they clearly have no interest in shopping, in H, or in any of the merchandise. The SAs turn them away in droves...

I do think so much of it depends on luck...which of course is not the answer anyone wants to hear!

i think this "tactic" can work depending on what kind of guy your DH/DF/DBF is... is he a "smooth talker"? is he comfortable shopping at stores like Hermes or is he like a fish out of water? not all men are the same, so i think it CAN work, or like luvbolide has pointed out, it MAY NOT work either (granted that the store HAS a B or K in the back to offer)

My fiancee just walked in and asked for a B. Sa called in 3 months. .. he doesn't dress up at all. Lululemon pants n a tee shirt is the most he dresses up. The yoga pants are way more comfy then jeans :)

The general rule at H boutiques in the U.S. are no B, K, or C to walk-in customers. Of course this rule may change if the individual spends a large sum amount on RTW, fine jewerly, or home items.

To be honest, I don't think it's possible at these 3 locations if you only want b/k. These locations don't even have enough for their own local regular customers. but doesnt hurt to try. good luck!
