This thread is really interesting...because I always thought you needed to have a relationship with one of the SAs in order to be offered a Birkin. My mum is going to Paris in May this year and she's never purchased anything from Hermes before (even though I have) and I've asked her to try and find a black with GHW. It'll be interesting to see what they say...

I've got my first B (30 cm, etoupe color, white hardware) from H store in Marseille in December, 2012.I asked about Garden Party in etoupe or orange, but they didn't have. When I asked about B or K, SA told me they did not have any B or K and that orders were only possible in Paris. I was not too surprised and upset as I knew how difficult it was to get one without having relationship with SA. SA asked if she could help me with something else, but I replied that I was only looking for a nice bag in etoupe. They had Victoria II in etoupe, but I didn't like the model. Then SA asked me what bag I wanted more - B or K? I replied that it was B. Then she asked about size - I wanted 35, but she replied they didn't have 35, but it was possible they still had etoupe B in 30. I decided to look at it however I generally like bigger bags. 30 size was perfect for me, 35 would have been too big as I am what they call petite :) That is how I got my baby without buying anything else in Hermes (except for Garden Party in Italy for my sister).

Funny - when other customers (one Asian and one Russian couples) saw I got B, they asked for B or K also, but SA replied that I had pre-ordered my B and just came to collect it. Actually that time I went to Hermes without any hope for good luck as I had been hunting for B or K all over the Europe for about one year by then. SA from LV told us it was generally easier to get B or K in Marseille as the city itself is not very fashionable and they didn't have a lot of tourists coming for shopping there. So it could be a hint for those who are still hunting for their first B or K.

It just depends on the SA and their prerogative.

I was in the Sydney store Yesterday and the sales person told me they had no stock and that they do not even put people on the waiting list anymore!!! So frustrating especially since I am desperate for one!!! :shucks:

I think at Madison it all depends on who are you working with.

Last time, I went there to look for a SA called "Bukky". I have never met her so I didnt know what she looked like. When I went down to bag section, I saw an rather older SA and I asked her :"Hi, I'm looking Bukky." And because my pronounciation is not clear, she heard "birkin" instead of "Bukky". She immediately said :"write down your name for me, I'll check in the back to see what do we have."

I have never met this SA and the first sentence I said to her (at least in her perspective) was to ask for a birkin. And according to my experience, when an SA is willing to take your name, she will have something in the back that she is willing to sell.

So a good SA is all you need to score your dream bag at Madison, it's such a large store and it's very rare that they "don't have it".

Not to be negative but actually most of the time they ask you to write down your name and number to check your purchasing history; and whether you will be offered a "coveted" bag or not might be determined by your history.

As for this new rule. I haven't heard any official from H. While I think stores that has a lot of tourists traffic (i.e. Vegas, Paris, Hawaii, possibly NYC) should be more open to walk-in clients; but I understand most boutiques wants to reserve their best inventory for their best clients. Hermes isn't the only house that does this. I'm not saying in any way that walk-in clients shouldn't be offered certain items, just that I understand why (if) some stores prefers to offer their best inventory to long time/loyal clients.

+1 When I was in Hawaii recently I asked about B/Ks I was asked to write down my name/info on the card and the bags I was interested. Only AFTER the SAs looked up my history and realized I was for real and not just walking in cold trying to get a bag were they more receptive to my inquiries. HTH.

You just never know with H. Everyones experiences are so different.

Definitely wish I would have tried the Paris store, but I tried the Florence store a couple days ago. It was my first time, and I ended up buying 2 clic clacs. The SA was a lot nicer than I expected and when I inquired about B's and K's after deciding to buy the bracelets, I didn't get the feeling she was lying. Maybe I'm being naive, but she was really helpful and explained my best bet would be to try the H store closest to where I live because I would need to check regularly.

I started to wonder for a second if she was being truthful because when I was waiting to pay there was a Russian family that had just purchased something in a VERY large box, and I started to wonder if it was indeed a birkin. But their total was only a little over €4000 so it must have been something else. Nonetheless it was fun to see them pay in cash lol.

You'll never know if she was lying. SAs suggest you to ask for b or k in your local store because they also have local customers to deal with. And local customers can spend more than a visitor, so I guess that's why they don't usually sell nice bags to visitors.

Best luck looking for the bag you want!!

True. Oh well I just saved myself some money then!

Went to H on bond street in London today and it was such a madhouse! Saw a local (carrying a B) trying on a jypsiere but she told the SA she prefers a B. SA was trying hard to sell that jypsiere or convince her that she can put her on a wait list for other colors but not for a B. Not sure of the outome because I didn't want to stick around any longer if they didn't have any B's to sell today.

A while back one of my friends was at the Hermes store in Vancouver and she saw a 30cm Crocodile Birkin in the window and told her SA that she wanted it. SA told her that it was display only but she wasn't going to take NO for an answer and said that she wouldn't leave without the bag. (she is a loyal customer at Hermes, with 4 birkins and 3 Kelly bags) The SA finally gave in and sold it to her so anything you see in the store is for sale.

Hi Im new to this forum and I am looking for a birkin - I do have contacts at hermes through friends and family who have purchased numerous birkins but where is the most cost effective place to purchase one?

Since you already have contacts, I would say the most cost effective way is to have your family and/or friends help you get them ;).
