Scarves MYH's Scarf Showcase - and philosophical ramblings about how I built my collection

So while I had time today, I thought I would show one more scarf. Since I'm on a CSGM role, I thought I would showcase the second CSGM I bought. It wasn't soon after I got that Graff scarf, that I acquired this one too. Once you rip that band aid off and you have "accepted" the price, there are just so many to consider. So I remember this clear as day...I walked into the boutique and was convinced I wanted the black Tous Les Bateaux shawl. I thought it would be a perfect neutral that would go with everything. See, even then, I was obsessed with B&W and neutral scarves. I figured, if they were going to cost a pretty penny, I better pick a few that would go with everything in my wardrobe. So I was fixated on getting the design and cw I researched onlinel but when I tried it on, it was too...well black. I have black hair. I wear black clothes. And the background on the shawl was black too. I was drowning in black! It was a slow day at the boutique and several SAs came around to weigh in and I saw frowns all around! Uh oh! So then I spied this Echec au Roi out of the corner of my eye. It was black, grey, red and white. I threw that one on and it was much better! The main background color was whitish creme (much better for my coloring) and it still fulfilled my neutral goal. But it had a bit of red in it...but I decided it wasn't that big of a deal and so this is how I acquired my 2nd CSGM. I know it sounds like I must have many CSGMs in my drawer, but actually, that's not true. I only have 5. The first two I bought in quick succession. Then after that, I slowed way down.

I also learned that day to be open minded when I try on scarves/shawls. I can research my little heart out online and think something will look good on me, only to find out it doesn't work. I actually think that's half the fun of Hermes. Lots of times the boutique won't have the cw or design I want, so sometimes I have to re-adjust and make decisions quickly on another item(s). And here are some photos of my Echec au Roi.

The blocks of red definitely adds a little something to this CSGM. Love love this!!

Love reading about the whys and wherefores of scarf choices , it's so interesting especially the Graff shawl which looks fantastic.
It was too out there for me then when it came out , but now I totally get it and can see it's two things I love: edgy and flattering . Also thumbs up for the large amounts of ivory in both shawls, bringing light to the face.

I ripped of the H plaster with La Femme Aux Semelles de Vent and have never stopped adoring her.
It's all too easy to grab the CSGMs now ,I'm never out of them from October to April , so useful.

Both shawls are fabulous on you! And I adore your accessories. This echec is especially great. Love red/white/black!

I just realized that none of my shawls (or large moussies) has much white. Hm. I think it's because I have long white hair, and get a lot of pop from that! Like frou frou, I am wearing CSGMs most of the year and they take a lot of abuse.

Two fab shawls MYH, thank you for sharing them both. My slippery slope on GMs began with the la femme shawl. Same as froufrou, I was delighted to have found one of the last remaining neutral ones in the country. It took nearly a month before I could bring it out to be worn because I did not want anything happening to it.

My most worn one is the blue ELK. that is the one I usually take with me when traveling. I am up to a good thirty or more GMs, and I prefer the GM size over 90 because I enjoy the scale of designs more on me. Still, I would agree with PT, there is something so lovely in feeling to have the silk twill on the neck. Sublime!

Hearing your CSGM score makes me feel so much better ! The great designs just keep on coming :graucho:

Both are beautiful!
I had over 40 scarves before I bought a CSGM. I have 2 now. But, I am not sure how to pick the right ones. Should the pattern be large scale like ZP? Or small scale like pays de oiseux? Or something in between? Is it better to pick one with just a few colors in them, as yours are. Or more of a riot of colors?
My first CSGM is cavalier du caucus with the black background. All my coats are black, and black is usually a travel to Europe neutral, so this seemed perfect. It has a riot of color, so figured it would go with nearly everything. However, I don't really like the yellow/gold bits in it, so I tend to fold it to minimize that.

I love the look of the echec scarf, but I am such a klutz so wonder about your experience with the light background?

Hi Scarf1 - you have some good questions to ponder! I really should discuss the design scale part a bit. I think I will in my next post.

I really love this one. I didn't know that you have it. I have seen it on eBay. I definitely would have bought it if it was rouge h. But reds are tricky for me. And at cashmere prices I don't take chances. [emoji23]
I would have loved it in Rouge H too. I can do red if there's not too much of it. Sometimes a red top makes the skin on my face look red. :no-good:

This is one of my very favourites on you, so clever, so chic, so arty (but effortlessly)

I can't buy many CSGMs. Firstly, I find silk 90s very versatile, portable and useful but also I love the sheen that the silk gives to some designs. A design has to actually look equally good or better in the matte CSGMs before it begins to tempt me. They also have to have a grandeur that befits such a large format. Evidently, EaR in this striking cw does and has (on you, it would be too high contrast for me.
PT - your comments are so sweet. I love the outfits and scarves you post so I consider this high praise coming from you. Thank you! I also, agree, sometimes a 90cm does not translate well into a 140cm and sometimes it's even better. But yes, my black hair does allow me to wear black and white very easily and for that, I am grateful. Over the past year, I have found the 90s to be more versatile than I once thought. I too was on a "no more 90s ban" for about a year but I gave it up quickly once I put some effort into playing around with the size and found a few knots that I could use all the time.

Thank you for posting these! I love them and they remind me of a question:

I saw a shawl I love, (Panthera in the gold CW). It looked great, but I didn't buy it (yet) because I am afraid of all the white area in it. I notice your shawls have a lot of white area too. My great fear is I will get it dirty right away and not be able to clean it perfectly. Have you had any difficulty? Looks like you use these beauties in many situations, so I would love to hear how they fare as far as becoming stained or dull looking?
The white bits on my scarves have not become yellow or dull. The biggest stain crimes I have committed are coffee and they come right out at the dry cleaners or even if you wash it yourself.

I love your CSGMs!!! Great post
Thank you! I have 3 more to show so please check back soon.

How do you use your cashmere brush? I have the same one but it has been sitting on the shelf lol

Sent from my SM-G9350 using PurseForum mobile app
Ahhh....the cashmere brush. I will go over this too in my next post.

Yes, it was very bold and out there when it first came out I agree. But the cw just sang to me and I loved the idea that H had a graffiti design. LFAS - that is a beautiful shawl! Would love to see it modeled if you have time dear.

I like you in bold colors MomaS - lots of white doesn't work for everybody so thank goodness H makes multiple cws of each design. And even then....sometimes I still don't find one. Like Sieste au Paradis this season - I so wanted a shawl but could not find one that worked for me.

Swooning at the fact you have a eLK. I had the chance to buy the one with the light aqua waves in the corner but I didn't think it looked that great on me so I passed. And I nearly fainted when you said you have 30 shawls! I think you are the next candidate for a scarf showcase thread!

I also agree with the gorgeous feeling of a silk 90cm on my neck. I find the CSGMs soft, but still a tad itchy. That's why I'm also addicted to giant silks in 140cm too.

Yes! Me too! I'm interest to know how to use cashmere brush
OK, I will show how I use it in my next post.

yes, Lanit's CSGM count makes us all feel virtuous!

Beautiful. So elegant, and perfect with your accessories.

I admit to being your secret sister on this one. :ghi5: It's only a secret because it just arrived, right on time for 80's and humid weather. Who knows when I'll get to wear it but I am very excited. I liked this design ever since I saw it on you ages back in the 90, but couldn't find a 90 cw I liked or at least suited me. Sentimental too since my son plays chess and is good at math and my grandfather was an architect. The design reminds me of both things. Anyway, I have the ivory/gray/pale rose one. Love how you've tied yours and will remember for future reference!

That's the best. Sentimental + useful scarves. I must admit - I almost bought a scarf the other day only for sentimental reasons but then a good friend asked me if I will wear it. The answer was no so I passed on it. If it's sentimental and you will wear it, that's perfect!

I am happy to hear you are my sister from another mister! Can't wait to see you model your lovely cw dear.

For those that asked how I use my cashmere laundress brush, here's a quick tutorial.

First, I lay out my shawl on a flat surface. I usually fold it in half so it's actually 2-ply on the flat surface. Make sure the surface is flat and smooth. You can do this on a hardwood floor of your home if it's nice a smooth (no grooves or splinters) or sometimes, I even use an upholstered leather bench I have. You can also use a firm couch or a firm upholstered chair.

Look at the weave of your shawl closely. There is a grain to it. Make sure you brush with the grain of the shawl, not against it. I will orientate my photos vertically so the weave runs north/south up/down so you can see what I mean. I can not express how important this part is. You must brush with the long grain of the weave. So my brush strokes are bottom to top OR south to north.

So identify some fuzzy pilly areas and get your brush out. Now this is the scary part. You need to find the right pressure to push down on the brush as you stroke with the grain. If your pressure is too light, nothing will happen. If it's too hard, you run the risk of creating snags. So start lightly and start applying more pressure as you gain confidence until you find just the right amount. I actually hear kind of a scratchy sound as I do this. It sounds scary at first but you will get used to it. And voila! You will magically see the furriness of the cashmere subside.

And that's about it! Here are some before and after photos of a corner of my shawl that I just brushed. Do you see the difference?

I use my cashmere comb from Brora for my sweaters and also for my CSGMs
I think it's quite a bit more aggressive than yours as I usually remove a little piie of fluff , so maybe I'll try to order the Laundress one.

Oh goodness! There is going to be a "run" on the cashmere brushes. Pun intended! :D I'm glad you all liked my brushing tips. Scarf1 - strangely, for me, the brush does not work on my cashmere sweaters. The brush seems to work best for a cashmere that's a really fine weave with almost no pile. My sweaters all more "hairy" than my CSGMs and I find the brush gives me no results. :nogood:
