OK, sneaking in sometime this evening to write a post. I finally set aside time this afternoon to wash some twillies that were looking a bit grungy. Gross. And I got to thinking...how many do I have? I don't even know. (I just counted. The answer is 14. That's not too bad) And to be honest, I only realized last night as I was gathering them up that I think I am missing one. So I searched high and low and found 2 (only thought I was missing 1

) in a suitcase pocket neglected. Yes, I have a twilly problem. I can't even keep track of them.
OK, first a little about washing. I use the Laundress silk soap and dump some (read instructions) into a huge mixing bowl filled with cold water. I do this in my kitchen sink. I don't wash like colors with like colors. They all go in the same batch. They will be fine. The ones I feel are especially filthy, I will rub soap onto directly and rub between my fingers and palms to really work the soap in. Then I swish and swish for a couple of minutes in the soapy water and then I grab all of them at the same time and plunge the whole lot into another bowl of cold water to rinse. I dump out the soapy water and rinse and repeat about 3 times until I feel like all the soap is gone. Then I squeeze some water out with my hands and transfer onto a towel and roll up the towel with the twillies in it to get as much water as possible to absorb into the towel. Then just lay them out on a bed to dry. In about 2 hours, they should be pretty much dry and I then run an iron on silk heat setting right over them. Good as new!
OK, back to why I love twillies. There are so many reasons. First it's function. Now I consider myself a clean person but I do realize that there are times I have sunscreen, lotion, sticky hands...and I cringe at the thought of getting my bag handles dirty. So as soon as I bought my first kelly, I bought some twillies. At first, I didn't give much thought to the cw or design. If I liked it, I would buy it. But like all collections, I started rounding out the colors I didn't have AND I'm still working on it. Now unlike scarves, twillies don't need to "light up your face" or match with your spring, summer, fall, winter coloring. Thank goodness. This is the beauty of buying twillies. It's so much easier. All you have to do is make sure it looks good on your bag and H bags by definition are attractive objects so pretty much any twilly looks good on it as long as the colors coordinate. I do know some people think twillies on bags is too fussy. I think it's all in what cw and design you choose as well as how you tie it. I myself am an asymmetrical one-tail gal. I think if you like a really streamlined look, you can even go no tails. Just tuck the tail in so it doesn't show. Two-tails to me is too symmetrical and a little fussy for me. Also, I tend to not choose a twilly thats a complete contrast from my bag. I kind of like the twilly to have at least a little of my bag color in it and some other fun colors as well. I will show you some examples in a moment. So it's harmonious but not completely match-matchy. I don't know if any of this makes sense. Sorry. I will let the photos do the talking.
Oh and for those of you who feel you kind of have a scarf buying problem - guess what? The good news is twillies don't count! Yes you heard me. It's true. They are just little pieces of silk and you don't need to count them in your scarf collection. So if your spouse says in an exasperated tone "You are going to buy another scarf?" You can say "No, twillies are not scarves! They are strips of silk and they don't count!" MYH said so on TPF. Just direct them to me. I will explain why.
I know some people wear twillies around their necks but I don't. Sometimes I will tie it onto a farandole and create a farandole/twilly necklace but I don't use it as a scarf. I like it on others and those with slim necks can do the mors ring scarf ring thing, but I can't. I have accepted it. I have also seen people tie them around the handles of their picotins and it looks great. I've just never tried this myself. I kind of like it as a bow on my picotins. It's really easy to be creative with them and I've even tried tying them onto non-H bags. My sis has a vintage BV bag and I tied a twilly onto it by weaving it through the grommets. I took a photo and showed it below. Use them on your non-H bags too! Don't be shy.
The things I do use my twillies for:
1) Create a twilly/farandole combo necklace
2) Make a bracelet
3) Tie it on a summer hat
4) Tie it on my kelly handles
5) Tie it on my evelyne for a pop of color
6) Tie it as a bow onto my picotins
Things I know other people do with them:
1) Use it with a mors scarf ring as a cute necklace
2) Headband
3) Scarf
4) Tie around ponytail
5) What else? I'm sure there are a million uses
Oh and also, if you want to learn how to tie the twilly rose, check out this youtube video by The Family of Love. I hope it's ok to post the vid here. She shows six ways to tie a twilly and the rose is one of them. This is a great video.
