Scarves MYH's Scarf Showcase - and philosophical ramblings about how I built my collection

I'm back with a crowd pleaser today. Since Chinese New Year just passed and it's Opera season at the moment, I thought I would showcase Turandot. I'm sorry or not sorry, definitely one of those options, for the B&W scarf hunt I sent some of you on. But you will thank me in the end! But this one, ack!, is not so easy to find. My hunt was a nerve-wracking one that had a happy ending but I'm not sure if I would have done it all again.

I'm not sure where and when I became obsessed with this scarf. My scarf collecting has lasted a couple of years now and some of it is just a blur. I think I block some of it out because it's kind of crazy how many scarves I own. And to make a little confession....I broke down and just bought a CSGM from H.com that is being delivered Monday. Oy! I wasn't supposed to buy anymore CSGMs, but there you go. Anyway, back to the story, I knew I needed this one. So the online reseller search began in earnest several years back. One day, I see it pop up on evilbay for $425 BIN. Hmmm...was it real? Could I trust the seller? Seriously you guys, her other listings were for cheap toys and car parts (or something like that). No other Hermes items. Nothing in the price range of this scarf. No Hermes stuff in her selling history. And her story in the description was that is was a gift. We've all heard that one before right? The problem is I can never tell if it's true or not. So I watched it and checked on it over a couple of days and it was still sitting there. Was there a reason it was still available after a couple of days? I studied every inch of this scarf using the magnification feature on evilbay and it seemed to check out ok in my eyes. So I decided to take the plunge. I figured I could always open a case if it turned out to be fake. So I bought it and waited...and waited..and waited...she was in the U.S. and it should have taken a couple of days to arrive. I think I must have waited 2 weeks. By the beginning of week 2, I was convinced I had been scammed. Perhaps she never had the scarf. I figured she found some pics online, posted those, and just took my money and intended on sending me nothing! I contacted her and asked about it's whereabouts. She didn't have a tracking number. She told me she sent it and that I should be patient. It will arrive soon. Seriously?!?! No tracking number? Be patient? I was beside myself. And just when I was about to open a case....it arrived. I couldn't believe it. I opened up the package and it was magnificent. It was authentic and in mint (perhaps never used) condition. I was so relieved. I cried tears of joy (I think)! Now if I had to do this all over again, I'm not sure I would. I literally couldn't think about anything else for a whole week while I waited for this scarf to arrive. So I took a chance with a iffy listing and ended up scoring.

Now for the story of Turandot...this princess is really a character. I think TangoTosca probably went over the storyline before in her thread but in a nutshell (from Wikipedia), it is set in China and involves Prince Calaf, who falls in love with the cold Princess Turandot. To obtain permission to marry her, a suitor has to solve three riddles; any wrong answer results in death. Calaf passes the test, but Turandot still refuses to marry him. Poor guy...gotta feel sorry for him. Perhaps not the best story before Valentine's Day. :lolots:

I adore the details in this scarf. The little fish, the peonies. Peonies are my favorite flowers. The color is quite hard to capture but I tried my best. The tough thing about this scarf is the blue. It's tough to find a top that goes with the blues in this scarf. I should make a note to myself to go and buy some nice white T-shirts. I'm not sure why I don't have any? As much as I love this scarf, it does have a downside. The big navy border. I'm not a fan of big borders because much of the design in the middle doesn't show when tying a cowboy knot. But I'm willing to overlook this small flaw for this scarf.

So here she is, one of my most prized possessions....Turandot.

Love all of this MYH...the story, the details and that fabulous orange Picotin

Well MYH, since I must blame you for my recent obsession with finding a black and white scarf, lol, I thought I would share my purchase on your thread :graucho:
I was wavering between Zenobie, Reine de Palmyre and Collections Imperiales. So, in trying both IRL, I found the CI to be closer to the true B and W look I was hoping for. Although I also loved Zenobie, it read more white than B and W, while the CI was a bit more balanced, despite appearing like it would have too much black. I think having the white medallion in the center and a relatively prominent white border is what balances this design out in this CW. Thank you for letting me share on your thread...although my pocketbook does not thank you at all!!
So glad you got this. I was thinking the CI might be the best one for you. This white border is so bright and fresh! I know you'll have fun with this scarf.

The most perfect colorway of one of the most perfect scarves H has ever created. This is toward the top of my grail list!! It looks so lovely on you!

Omg another HG that's impossible to find now and in the most perfect CW. I just dug up my entire scarf collection (all 16 of them) and declared myself completely unsatisfied.

Sparkley - oh no! That was not the intent of this thread. I'm sure you have many gems in your collection! This is a dangerous place to hang out. I will concede that point. A collection of 16 is large for many. I'm sure you have chosen well.

So glad you got this. I was thinking the CI might be the best one for you. This white border is so bright and fresh! I know you'll have fun with this scarf.
Thank you so much my friend momasaurus! Of course, being the over thinker that I am, I lost much sleep over this one last night...I'm afraid in looking it over at home and in the pictures, it is a bit harsh/severe, especially with my primarily black wardrobe...so I may make another long trek down to the store this morning and look again at Zenobie...and believe it or not, although the bright white border truly helps to balance all of the black in the scarf, when I put it on that is all I see! The border on Zenobie is a softer look. Argh....see, if you had been shopping with me I would have had a second valued opinion lol!!

Well, going to the boutique is always fun, isn't it? Even if it's for an exchange. Is your SA helpful on these matters, like if a scarf is really too severe/harsh for you?

But have you tried the CI with a brightly colored blouse? I know you favor black, but you have something royal blue, yes? Or you might NEED something royal blue?? :graucho: Good luck and let us know how it goes, dear Bova. Whatever the outcome, it will be silky beauty.

Thank you so much momasaurus, I am trying it with other colors this morning and will make a decision...and yes, I don't mind going to the boutique, but it is so d*&$ cold this morning...:snowballs:

My unsolicited opinion:

I was for Zenobie over CI from the beginning. But Bova, I was very surprised by how well the CI looked in your modeling pics. Beautifully becoming. I agree there's a lot of border. But it seems to me that's what's softening it. I was wrong. Not that Zenobie won't also be beautiful, and definitely softer. I just want you to know that the way you wear the CI convinced me that it's a winner on you. Yes, it's bold. Yes you can carry it beautifully.

In the end you have to love it. That's that. Just believe me when I say you rock the CI; that's shouldn't be the concern.

Please don't get me wrong. I love the ones I have but after reading your thread I see so many missing. No B&w for example. This is an enabling thread. Thanks.

I have about the same number as you (including my HGs: point d'orgue in silk AND mousse), but just like you, it suddenly seems like I *need* a B&W scarf ;)

Haha! I know. Tpf makes you feel like you need a lot of things. I save photos of what I like on my iPad and if I keep coming back to things in my mind and my heart over several months I know it's love. If you jump at every impulse you will end up with 100 scarves. Ask me how I know this. [emoji23][emoji23][emoji23]

Bova As a serial second-thinker and returner of scarves I feel for you.
If I take a glance or see a photo of myself in a scarf and feel it doesn't look great on me ,I usually return it . It has to look great too !
It's a hard one because it does look good on you and you've had some honest and positive appraisals , but in the end if you don't love everything about it whatever others think is immaterial .
I would keep it and play around with different outfits and ties for a week before deciding.
Just a thought: my Mother always favoured 'showing skin' above strong pattern or colour .What if you try with a scoop neck or camisole under a jacket and tie the scarf lower?

a beautiful scarf, and this CW keeps that "asian" feel. I do see what you mean about the shades of blue difficult to coordinate. I like it best with your white top.

and love all your stories! please keep posting!
