Scarves MYH's Scarf Showcase - and philosophical ramblings about how I built my collection

Gosh - the week has flown by and I have not contributed as much to the forum as I have wanted. But today, I have found some time and wanted to showcase another scarf.

I was cutting some feather charms yesterday and was reminded of a shawl I love with feathers in it. The story of this 140cm CSGM shawl is rather funny. After reading Unos thread for that season, I did not have any intention of trying it on at the boutique. I had even seen some pictures of this design purchased by others laid out on a bed or floor. The design and name of the shawl just didn't appeal to me and I didn't think it I would like it. Sous L'egide de Mars? A scarf about the armor worn by princes? Hmmm...I was not swooning. I don't know about you but when I see these exhibits at museums, I typically breeze through this section. I appreciate the work that goes into the armor of yesteryear and marvel at how heavy and hot the poor guys wearing them must have been, but that's about the height of my appreciation.

So one afternoon, I saunter into the boutique and my SA runs over and says they just received a beautiful new shawl design and she has set aside a cw she thought I might like. So I'm all excited and then she says it's the shawl about armor called Sous L'egide de Mars. Thud! My heart sank. Not that one! I'm not interested in that one. So I ask if she has anything else new (at this point, I was going to the boutique like twice a week, I know...seriously...I had it bad) and she said no. So since I didn't want to waste a trip down to the boutique, I agreed to try it on just for fun. She brought it out and opened it up in its entirety and held it out flat to show me. Hmmm...still not thrilled. But hey, I had already committed to trying it on and I didn't want to disappoint her. So she folded it for me and I flung it around my neck and then looked in the mirror. Instant LOVE!:heart::loveeyes::heart: What the heck just happened? I thought I was going to hate it? I didn't even like it when she held it up for me. I've thought about this many times and decided it's Hermes magic. There is simply no other explanation.

But logically, here's my explanation. The scale of the design gets lost when you look at this scarf several feet away. The delicate feather details and the funny people in the little circles just kind of blend together. But then, when it's worn and the design is close to your face, the scarf transforms because you are now looking at it much more close up and all these little details that blended before, now pop out! Wonderful! My favorite part of this scarf :cloud9::love: are the blue and gray feathers at the top. I love those corners to death. I'm sure they are pure fuzz by now because I almost always wear this shawl in cowboy with those corners showing. But I can't help it. Those feathers make me so happy.

So I'm not sure if you passed this one up but maybe take another look at it? I see it on eBay from time to time and I'm often tempted to buy a back-up shawl in the exact same colorway to use when this one wears out. And it's often for a good price because it does not photograph well. Seriously, when you take an aerial view of this scarf, I think it is one of the most unphotogenic Hermes scarves/shawls I have ever seen. But worn and appreciated close-up, it's so gorgeous.

Oh no!!! What have you done? I had zero interest in the shawl until you posted it. I can totally see where you are coming from not being interested and then falling hard. Hermes magic. It's lovely. I like your feather charms too.

Lovely! These colors are so you!

I've never understood the title of this scarf since the figures appear to me to be telling the story of the Trials of Hercules. What does the god Mars have to do with it? Am I forgetting my mythology? May need to re-read. But the man in the lion skin is traditionally Hercules. Of course, none of this matters aesthically; it's beautiful.

Hermès magic is too right. I had a similar experience with my Sieste Au Paradise; I get it.

Pirula - I was also confused but did some googling and found this youtube clip. I'm not fluent in french but maybe you are? Can you listen to it and tell me what it says? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJl_5Fkb0eo

PbP - you have me in stitches with your comments. I'm sorry if I have cost you another bundle. Well, not really! hahahaha. Thanks for your compliment about my feather charms. I'm quite pleased with how they turned out.

Okay. No I'm fluent in Spanish not French. But know enough French to know this translates roughly (or directly?) to "under the protection of Mars." Mars must've helped Hercules during his Labors? Excuse moi while I consult The Oracle. Brb. [emoji4]

Omg!!! I wouldn't have thought this shawl would look so stunning till I saw you tie it in so many beautiful ways! And the way you matched it with the charms... PERFECTION!!! Wow! You really are one elegant lady MYH[emoji173]️[emoji173]️

MYH I was so hoping you'd post another scarf soon , and preferably a less known one, so voilà my wish is answered!
Love the discourse on how the shawl came to you and the moment of realising it was wonderful .
What I like so much about this one is the way it has all the neutrals plus blue and black , and the gorgeous golds to light you up .
I imagine it's very easy to wear and still has that way of transforming a casual outfit into something special . Another great choice, but I'm realising you can't put a foot wrong in that department!

I love love love the first modeling pic! And I can't believe you made those feathers yourself - they're so intricate!

Hmmm. No. In fact H messed with M's kids during his Labors. So Mars, of course is the Roman god of War. So since armor provides protection, then QED.

The Labors of Hercules decorate the armor. Here they are:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Labours_of_Hercules

That's my best guess.
Good work Pirula. Your explanation is good enough for me. ;)

Thank you! It really snuck up on me. I'm blushing here at your compliment.

Oh my goodness frou frou. You could knock me over with a feather after reading your sweet compliments. I do love featuring the less loved scarves here on the forum. But trust me, I have had my fair share of not-so-good scarves too. It's a learning process.

I love love love the first modeling pic! And I can't believe you made those feathers yourself - they're so intricate!
Thank you K! The leather feathers came to me in the middle of the night a couple of days ago and I became obsessed with trying to cut them. I'm happy you like the mod pics. Yes, for this scarf, cowboy is the way to go.

Beautiful things! Love the color choices. You have talent.

Thank you Keren16. There are lots of 140cms and 90cms for sale right now on evilbay. I just did a quick search and am now tempted myself. Oy! I enabled myself? A new first.

.

MYH I was planning on bidding for a 90cm Sous l'Egide de Mars before you posted your shawl , just reporting that I 'll be the proud owner soon.
I didn't want to spoil my chance of a bargain ,a girl loves a bargain, so I kept quiet!
I had tried it on at H when it was issued and although , like you, I didn't care at all for the design flat , it really was a transfiguration of me and scarf when tied . Hope the magic is still there when it arrives as it's a colour I don't normally find flattering.
I decided it would be one I would look out for on E*** , and I was waiting for a price I liked :graucho:
I'll post it here when it arrives

MYH, I have the same scarf and cw as this one and what you wrote felt as though it could have been written by me! I hated it flat. My SA kept trying to convince me and every time I shrugged her off. Finally I put it on to appease her and it was magic! Everything I didn't like about it flat came to life while tied about my neck! I took it home that day and started playing with it to see how it would fit into my wardrobe, well low and behold I have a lovely winter coat in the exact color of its boarder! Though I do wear this scarf with many different outfits, I always get compliments when I wear that coat and scarf together!

Thank you for this thread! It's been such a pleasure reading!
