Ooh Maedi - which new 90cm did you receive?

Thanks!! I do hope this chest of drawers works out.

Thanks for the cheering man!! And for letting me know you enjoy reading this thread.

FF - I think you are being far too generous. It’s kind of you to say it’s a 10 on me but I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I can’t muster up enthusiasm beyond a 6 personally. But I guess we all have our own grading scales.

And you are totally right about how it’s not that easy to find a scarf to wear with all black. It sounds like it should be easy but it’s not. Ugh.

Love your vibrant moussie hon. I’d also like to know how you tied it. You are very good at making them look like cotton candy around your neck. And your 90cm tie...please tell us how you do that as well. Love both these scarves on you.

I guess I’m more of a cheapskate than you ladies!! My 90cms need to earn their keep in my scarf drawer. They’ve got to do double duty as art and scarves lol. That is crazy Hermes is closed on a Saturday in Boston. The only excuse for that is if someone rammed their car through the window last night.
Re your comment about someone “ramming their car through the window....”
This actually happened in Houston at Hermes several years ago during the holidays!! Crazy!’

Hi MYH! Happy new year! Glad you're back on your great thread. Your thoughts on “scarf-aging” is quite on point. I frequently tie, re-tie, and then abandon the effort. Something just isnt right. Now i can go reassess, whether it’s color, scale, stiffness ...I like your 1-10 scale. I think this will help “reason out” why some work and some don’t. The 140 silks just are too much scarf for me; allergic to cashmere (gasp) so no comment there. Love the 45’s lately..particularly tying2 complementary patterns ..plus it’s less fabric around the neck for my N. CA climate! I also bought a few things at the sale and have yet to wear it (i think it might be the small scale print). I know many are wild for Annie Faivre, but they are too busy on me. And i agree on the more screens, the more desirable..but I find that I am liking the neutrals the best. Too much color and I start to look pretty busy! But on this new years eve, I resolve to to reassess and grade my scarf collection a la your 1-10 scale. :drinks:Adore your new constance!! What a great color. I am partial to all shades of grey! Finally...erm :whut: the B is still a nice shelf decoration (omg) but will be pulled out for 2018!

Well, I can agree with you MYH. I love the astrologie nouvelle...but in the emerald green-ish color blend. I wish I’d gotten that. I have never seen it on the resale market and am hoping it will show up at the H sale this coming summer (assuming it will come to SF again..please) Anyway, love how you tied it in the 3rd pix above.

Hi Essiedub! HNY to you too. You are not alone in the tie, re-tie, and then flinging the scarf on the bed out of frustration. I think this happens to all of us. We know when something looks off but dont really necessarily know how to fix it. I am quite jealous you are able to wear the 45s! They are priced “well” and do look so cute. My little sis is petite and they look so good on her too. I am in complete agreement with you about Annie Faivre. I love the artistic value of her scarves but I don’t like the busy small print either.
Good luck wtih finding AN in emerald green! I like that one too but am afraid of the yellow in it. I will definitely let you know if I ever come across one.

Mod shot of Metamorphoses par Hermes Paris.

These are for you, MYH. I only have the mod shot for the 90. The picture was taken by a bad phone a couple of years ago, and thus bad quality. The other one is 140 giant silk, a recent find from sale.

Hi Darma - I am so excited to see you are RosedeKalb! Do you know everytime I see Mao Mao in your IG photos, I smile really big because I am so happy you rescued him. Your story really touched me. Also thank you for your photos. They are not bad quality at all. I can see your scarves very clearly! love how you have paired b&w tiger print and stripes with Metamorphoses. I also heard people say the faces were creepy but I think when it’s tied, it just kind of looks more like an abstract design. To me, this totally works because you kept the color palette simple (black & white) and used prints that vary quite a lot in design & scale so they stand out but then also work harmoniously. Your classic astrologie probably falls into a category I would call “traditional” cause it has a lot of gold in it. But with that said, I do think your cw can look “fresh” because it has bright pinks and purples. I also like how you have tied it.

Also, there is absolutely no shame in having a lot of scarves. I think to most of us they are like wearable art pieces and you know what, I think they will last forever (as long as we take care of them). And a big congrats on your Astrologie Nouvelle giant silk. I have never seen this print at a sale!! Lucky you.

Hey scarfies!! Happy New Year!! Hopefully, you are not nursing a hangover from last night. Luckily, I am not even though I had a few drinks so I am a happy camper.

So....I have been asked by quite a few people if we could circle back to the “aging scarf” topic because they find it fascinating and want to learn and hear others opinions. I’m willing to give it a try but thought some ground rules might be good? I think the discussion can only be honest and frank if everyone feels comfortable sharing their true opinions without fear it will cause animosity. So here’s what I was thinking....I’ll try not to be too verbose.

1. Please don’t take every word literally. We are not professional writers and for some of us, English is not our first language. So if someone uses the word “old”, it doesn’t mean they are ageist or prejudice against someone because of their age. Perhaps a more accurate word could be older, mature, matronly, oldish, frumpy, etc. Just read for the general gist the writer is trying to express. Quick example, I have a male friend who loves Hermes scarves. When we go scarf shopping together, he will ask me “Does this make me look girly?” He does not mean he thinks girls are ugly, he doesn’t think it’s inferior to be a girl vs a boy, he does not hate girls, he doesn’t think it’s wrong to look like a girl, and he is not sexist. But I know what he means. Does this make sense?

2. Can we not post pics of scarves tied on ourselves and then ask everyone if the scarf looks aging? I would say most of us would not feel comfortable giving our true opinions because it’s now become too personal. If you really want an honest answer, I would suggest laying the scarf flat on the floor, tie a knot and lay it on the floor, or take a screen shot from google images.

3. Let’s not turn this into a debate about who’s wrong and who’s right. If some people engage in this discussion with the goal of only proving their point, I don’t think it will be productive. I dont’ think there are any right or wrong answers and we may all have differing opinions. But as with any discussion, I think there will be a majority and a minority. If you’re in the minority, that’s ok. Your opinion doesn’t have to be the same as everyone else’s.

4. If this is a really sensitive topic for you or if you know you will get upset if some people say some negative things about scarves in your collection, then please skip this thread for the next couple of days. Know yourself and what you can handle.

I myself am curious to learn too!! I have my own opinions but they are not set in stone.

OK to kick off the discussion, I thought we could do a poll. Let’s play stylist. You have been invited to a casual birthday party. This is your outfit (I hope most of us agree this is a good outfit). Do keep in mind the jeans can be blue or another color. But this is the general look. If you hate this outfit, perhaps it’s better to not participate in the poll.

You want to wear a 90cm Hermes scarf but want to keep your look “fresh” and not “frumpy”. Rank the following scarves in order of favorite to least favorite. Which scarf would you choose and why? If you really dislike all of the 4 options, please post a pic of a scarf you like better. After we get some responses on the scarves, we can talk about which scarf knots you think would work.

Fun game! I pick the top right (not sure on the name). Maybe as a belt or long necklace like maitai or more adventurous/fresh as a headband(xoxogossipgirl [emoji23]) Hope Pinterest snapshots are okay-

Realized I might have jumped the gun on knots, sick on the couch all day and bored of tv I like the floral one for freshness due to the colors. Bright and lively.

OK, in case you dont know the names of the scarves:

Top left Pique Fleuri de Provence
Top right is Fleurs d’Indiennes
Bottom left is Colliers de Chiens
Bottom right is Chasse en Inde

I like the fleurs d’indiennes best for an elegant tonal look. Second choice colliers de chien for a fun pop of color. I have the chase en indie. The outfit is modern and sexy enough to pull off this scarf if tied the right way in part because the colors are low key, but I have to be very careful how I wear this scarf. The pique is my least favorite option. The small print and varied colors are hard to wear. In fact I had this scarf and I sold it because I couldn’t get the image of an old table cloth out of my head.

The scarves that I have that are small prints that I like are all very monochromatic. Like this

How fun- My picks: CdC, second choice FdI- great ground rules dear. I like the CDC for graphic impact and a bit more color pop to this neutral outfit(very similar to my everyday uniform). Plus i am a yin yang girl, i like balancing warm and cool tones, so the blues in CdC help balance and contrast against the pale rose beige sweater. FdI is okay too for the scale, but sometimes the florals overwhelm the face imo. My least favorite are the chasse en inde and last choice is pique flueri due to busy design and too much symmetry. I had the pique flueri in csgm, and it always made me feel like i was in Bavaria lol. I have Chasse en Inde in brighter colorways, in klein blue summer silk, fuschia 90 fringe cashmere and hot pink and orange. This blue one shown is a bit too pale though ok for understated look.

I’m stepping out of my lurking-mode of this thread, because I want to play stylist!

The only option for me to keep the outfit “fresh” would be the Colliers de Chiens.
I want the overall “vibe” of an outfit to match with the “vibe” of a scarf. This way it becomes part of and complements the outfit, rather than the scarf being the “star of the show”. This outfit (modern, clean lines, few colours, no frills, not girly etc) needs a scarf that has the same characteristics and a strong print. Even the CdC is a bit too busy to my liking, because of the borders. I would pick something like Hermès Electrique.

Oh this is fun!! As a guy who loves H scarves, I find that the rules are a bit different for me in regards to what is ageing vs what is not. Sometimes I feel like [at least in my own mind HAHA] I could get away with more "matronly" patterns just for the sheer irony of a 30-something man wearing a 90cm H scarf with small flowers on it. Not that I gravitate towards small, floral patterns [most of you know that I don't] but I do wear a lot of different styles with different knots and I never feel self-conscious about any of them ageing me [not even my maxi-twilly tied in a Thatcher-esque bow! haha]. That said, I can understand how some ladies may feel the way they do about particular patterns and ways of knotting. I do feel rather strongly, though, that it's mostly about the attitude and confidence displayed by a wearer of any sex as to how a certain look is perceived by others.

In regards to the activity:
Fleurs d’Indiennes would be my first choice. I love the colorway and as it has sorta a retro-70s feel to it, the outfit pictures would be the perfect one to showcase a scarf like this. Chasse en Inde or Colliers de Chiens would both be good second options. I love that the Chasse would create a soft, somewhat monochromatic look whilst the Colliers has similar colors but is bolder.

Pique Fleuri de Provence was never a fave of mine and that particular colorway even less so. It reminds me of a quilt and though I'm sure it would look great on certain people, it is not the most versatile in color or pattern.
