Scarf1 ,I'm in absolute agreement about ageism .Hate it .
I'm old [ who cares anymore ] and not afraid of looking it . I like the new wave of women who have confidence about themselves ,don't need reinforcement of how they look or seek to appear different through medical means.
Having said that I do expect a scarf to do the lift for me , and the one I showed earlier didn't.
It enhanced my dark circles and flyaway hair somehow and Linda Rodin didn't like it on me.

You have a very harmonious elegant style and we all love that.

Here's the incredibly beautiful Jardins de Sintra cw 02.See that crazy gorgeous yellow hem ? And the dragonfly?
Love it to bits after seeing it modelled in the AW 2017 thread, and saw it for the first time in store last week . It looked sensational on others ,and it looked good on me at the time.
Pirula looks amazing in her scarves. It's a question of balancing colouring, lifestyle etc so there' no universal law
It isn't going to work for me largely because it drains the bejesus from my palish sallow skin ,and it makes me look too serious .
It's all so complicated because I still wear 90cm and love them .Mousseline is not my format and they've all but one gone . I think MYH has nailed all the reasons some scarves don't work for me , I'd never identified these before but reading her list I was nodding in accord.
My way is this .
I put the scarf around my shoulders first thing in the morning and peer at myself.
Then if I reckon my style icons [ Alexa Chung, Jane Birkin, Linda Rodin are some] wouldn't be seen dead in it , then neither will I .

Frou frou- I can’t really judge your skin tone from the photo but the green looks beautiful with your hair. Have you tried tying it as a long necklace? It might hide the yellow hem if that’s what’s clashing with your skin and make it less serious! I personally love jardin de sintra and have the grey cw. I hope to visit the garden in Portugal one day [emoji254]

That is a beautiful, very rich colored scarf. Sorry it doesn’t work for you.

Wow, I am stunned by some of the responses here. I seem to have struck a nerve. I’m not going to answer individual people because I don’t feel it would be productive. What I am going to say is of course there is nothing wrong with getting old. It’s going to happen to all of us.

I was operating under the assumption that most of us do not want to wear a scarf that makes us look older than we actually are.

That’s why I wrote about my observations. They are just my opinion and I said that many times. If you love small prints and flowers, then great!! If you love mousselines, keep on wearing them. I have 5 moussies myself. If you don’t care if a scarf makes you look older than you actually are because you love it, I support you!

I was just writing a post that summarized what I thought. If every word is going to be dissected and argued over, and people are going to get all bent out of shape, then I think this is really sad.

This thread is about how I’m building my scarf collection and the criteria I use to decide if something joins my collection or not. Chit chatting about this topic is supposed to be fun. I hope it continues on in that spirit.

MYH, thanks for coming back to update your thread.

As this is MYH's collection and thoughts on scarves/etc., might I gently suggest that if others don't share her tastes, they find another thread to which they might contribute? I doubt that any of her comments are meant to offend, and I think she outlined that above.

The thread is not about proving what scarves look "right" on specific people, aging, or which designs are "best." I hope everyone can enjoy this thread in the spirit in which it was created - a personal evocation of a collection.

Thanks.

While I agree that MYH never intended to offend anyone, she did specifically request discussion.

Did you actually just delete my post of the Queen?

Yes, I actually did - tthere have been reports asking for the thread to get back on topic. And I just did ask for people to get back on topic.

In her last post about this, she also wrote, "If every word is going to be dissected and argued over, and people are going to get all bent out of shape, then I think this is really sad."

So please - no further dissection or right fighting.

Thanks.

Coming together and chit chatting is the all MYH .
I vote you buy a few more shawls and scarves so that we can continue in that vein.
Come to think of it I remember your opening posts of a great collection some of which you still haven't talked about.
I think you have a special gift of storytelling to make us feel included n your excitement over not only a new to you scarf , but one that has a special feel to you.
If I read correctly your recent house move took precedence over the scarf buying.
Hope you're loving your new home and feeling that je ne sais pas about the new season .
I've recently splurged on a few long sought silks :yahoo:, so I'll be sharing them over on the G thread .

I have bought more scarves and am just about to talk about them!! Thanks for the kind words about my move. We actually downsized and it has been challenging!! But it did not stop me from buying a scarf chest :graucho: just to house my precious silks. There is actually lots of extra room in my new piece (to be delivered next week) so I’m afraid for my wallet. And yes, I do like quite a bit of designs in the new season so am super excited about it.

I cannot wait for you to share your new silks. I’m super excited to see them.

Well, that doesn't sound good. Is it the colors that don't flatter you, or what? Did someone - ahem - point this out, or did you notice it in pix? I find I can assess my good/bad colors better in pictures. Of course that generally means buying the scarf and bringing it home, then going back to the boutique, if necessary.
momasauras, I am like you....I need pictures to fully assess my "look". I haven't found any scarf bad buys that way. But....I can easily look at a picture and think "Well! That scarf just doesn't go with this jacket, or shoes, or purse." And I have also been scrutinizing lipstick matches or not that way recently.

I disagree with You, MYH, and found some of your comments offensive. In particular that looking older or being older are a negative thing. I am old. I look old. No matter what scarf I wear, no one is going think I am 20 years younger than I am. It is fine if you don’t like certain formats or designs.
Yes, I was bugged that some of the designs ( small floral) that you dislike are in my scarf collection. I wear scarf rings. Also, I now have quite a few moussies.
like others here, I don’t think it as simple as “all busy small designs are bad”. I think the colors need to be harmonious with your outfit as well as your coloring. Also, the scale of the print, style( traditional or abstract) can play a role on how your outfit looks.
I have a variety of scarf formats, styles - sometimes it depends on my mood or season what I wear.

MYH, you couldn't offend me if you tried! You did enter the caveat that it was only your opinion.
And yet, I can well see the points made by scarf1 and frou frou. MYH, and all our dear younger chatsters: Getting older, and
looking older are not as awful as many fear. For one thing, most women find that their self confidence increases while their give-a-darn (about others opinions of them) shrinks! So we always look lovely albeit some days are lovlier than others. I have some designs with small prints and love them, as does scarf1. I may model the scarf on the head pirate look some time for all, as it does work for me.

Finally, I just want to say that I truly enjoy this thread and look forward to new entries. You have marvelous fashion sense, and a true gift for writing. (((MYH, scarf1 and frou frou)))

Sale Goggles. As much as we would all like to admit we don’t wear them, I think we do. Or at least I do! The next scarf I’m going to show is a good example of this. I would never have purchased this scarf at full price. But at the SF H sale this year, I thought it was worth the sale price. I’ve always told myself, if I won’t pay full price for a scarf, then I shouldn’t even buy it at the sale price. I guess I break my own rules!

I bought it mid-year and have seriously not even worn it until yesterday. :facepalm:I opened my scarf drawer yesterday morning and was pondering my choices. I had on an all black outfit because I was being super lazy. Black cashmere sweater, black pants, black shoes, black and grey coat, and black bag. Now you would think that almost any scarf would match an all black outfit, but actually I’m really picky about what I wear with an all black outfit. I don’t think that all scarves work with an all black outfit. I like when the scarf itself has a little bit of black in it too but does not have a black hem or a black border. If it has a black hem or black border, it gets lost against a black top and loses its impact. It was also one of those days where I didn’t want to wear a super bright scarf either because I just felt like being low key.

So like a ouija board game, my hand floated over my scarves and the universe directed me to this one!! Carre Cube. Yeah, it was pretty arbitrary! But I decided to give it a try because there is some black in the cw and I felt like it could work with my all black outfit. Also DH and I were going to a modern art museum and it kind of seemed on theme. LOL. Sorry for the wrinkles in this scarf but I did not feel like pulling out the ironing board before I took the pic and I did wear it all day.

So this is a good example of a scarf I felt was worth the sale price, but not the full price. It fits some of my criteria for scarves I tend to like. Mid-large scale design. Check! Modern and abstract print. Check! So that’s about all it has going for it!!

The negatives for me about this scarf are that it’s a 90cm. I kind of have a hard time with this size because I find it hard to style casually. The colors in it are few and very simple and maybe even a bit weird. Mustard, colvert, grey, black, bright blue and white. There are only 5 colors in this scarf. OK 6 if you count white. For some reason, I feel like if something is going to cost $400, it better be labor intensive to make! I want to get my monies worth! When I hear a scarf has 20 or more screens in it, it actually makes me want to buy it more. AND, the border is a bright blue that seems kind of out of place to my eye. I’ve seen Hermes do this many times with scarf designs. The border will be a bright acid green or bright orange but does not relate to any of the colors inside the scarf. I typically don’t like that but in this case, the blue is a rather gorgeous shade of blue So I let it go.

The way I wore it yesterday was bias fold, then the two tails through a tube-like scarf ring with one tail thrown over my shoulder hanging in front and the other tail hanging down my back. I was wearing a v neck sweater and I kind of like it when a little skin is shown between the scarf and v neck of the sweater. I debated about a pendant necklace or no pendant necklace and in the end decided no necklace. It did stay put pretty well throughout the day but I noticed that when I bent over to pick something up, the tail in back tended to want to come forward. But no problem! I would just toss it back again. I do hate knots I have to fidget with but since it didn’t involve retying the scarf, I was ok with that.

Here is my other favorite way of tying scarves. I’m not sure of it’s official name, but I call it the asymmetric cowboy knot.

Now for some strange reason, I don’t like this scarf tied as a regular cowboy. I think the design is not interesting enough to pull this off.

And since mustard is the unusual color in this scarf, I decided to highlight it with some accessories.

Thank you bobkat for your kind words. Of course, if you get a group of strong-minded ladies together, we will have differing opinions. I’m happy to hear you enjoy this thread.

This scarf is so pretty on you! Can you teach me how to tie the asymmetrical cowboy knot? I have seen so many of our lovely members tie their 90s this way. I am ready to learn.

Hi Ladybaga! So nice of you to stop by. The lighting is bad here since it’s dark so I hope you don’t mind if I steer you to an old instructional post of mine. I hope this link works. It’s actually post #145. This is my go-to knot when I don’t know what to do with my 90cms.
https://forum.purseblog.com/threads/how-to-wear-a-90cm-carre-silk-twill-casually.883586/page-10

MaiTai does have an instructional video called the asymmetric shoulder wrap but in her video, she uses a scarf ring and ties a small knot with small tails at the end which leaves way more material around the shoulders. I tie the knot with bigger tails and no scarf ring so it kind of becomes more of a cowboy knot. Also, she starts with the scarf around her shoulders where I prefer to just fold a rectangle in front of me on my bed. Once I pinch the opposite corners, I hold onto the scarf and flip it over my head. Her way and my way give the same results.

Give it a shot and if you still want me to post instructions, I will do it tomorrow.
