Scarves MYH's Scarf Showcase - and philosophical ramblings about how I built my collection

Thank you again, @MYH, for your posts and for the EYE CANDY! Your pix here and on IG make me drool, seriously. I might almost be able to understand the lure of pornography. LOLOL.

There were a few other HGs when I first started collecting. Remember the teddy bear scarf? People used to be crazy for that!! Also Les Triples, the cartoon characters doing touristy things in Paris? I will mention one of my HGs, because the prices are already ridiculous, even for a ratty old one with holes and rips: Mont Sanct Michel. I'm a crazy medievalist but not going to spend more than 1K on this!! Another HG for me with a similar theme is Gloires de Guillaume, the Bayeux tapestry scarf. I just can't find a CW that I like! Any suggestions?

Anyway, count me in on the cruise! And for going to the opera. I don't have a Turandot scarf (YET!!), but can give you all sorts of pointers because I'm also an opera nut.

Love you, @MYH, for this thread!!

Speaking of the Gloire d G, I share your thoughts exactly - the CWs are either very intense or almost washed out, so I'm still on the fence like you. Furthermore, I desperately wanted the Les Normands before I went to see the Bayeux Tapestry, so I got hold of a cream one, with pale, salmon pinks and pale turqoise to wear on my visit. Only worn a couple of times since, because it is simply to washed out for me. So I stalked the evil bay et al to lay my hands on the one with the blue border, and loadsa' gold and white, scored it and never worn it! The blue is too blue and the gold has never sat aparticularly well with me in any H scarf. I feel cheated :-) - but I have some other nautically themed ones that will come with me on said cruise!

Hi Silkies! How have you been? Sorry for being MIA (again) but I was away on a Thanksgiving destination vacay and was a bit busy trying to get my life back to regular working order when I came home. I'm sure you all know how it is! If you're in a part of the world that celebrates Thanksgiving, happy belated turkey day.

So we are officially in the home stretch for the holidays and I thought I would show one of the vintage holiday scarves I have. My fascination with this scarf began when I was deep in the throes of collecting and I became fascinated with jacquards. This was before H issued the tattoo scarves that many of us have. I wanted to see the pattern woven into the silk that everyone talked about! So I considered many...luna park (love carousels), napoleon (bees -), Les Fetes du Roi Soleil has fireworks - my head was spinning. I needed to see and own a jacquard! So after careful consideration (haha), I decided on Joies d'Hiver. I loved the ice skating people and the costumes they are wearing in the scarf. Luckily, there are many for sale on evilbay. It must have been a super popular scarf when it was issued because there is no shortage of this design on the reseller market. But I wanted one in good condition and finding one is not that easy because it's vintage and well - I'm sure the owner has worn it. And I was and still am a bit nervous to wash it. Has anyone tried? Will the dye run?

So I zeroed in on a cw and and found one that looked like it had been well cared for. When it arrived, I was overjoyed! I'm usually not a vintage scarf gal, in fact I prefer the more modern designs, but this scarf is so charming. In it, there is a man helping a woman put her skates on (seriously, don't think I have seen this happen at the rink ever). I have only seen a man help a child put on skates but not their adult GFs or wives. And there is a ice-skating group of two men on either side of one woman and skating with her. Perfect - two guys for every girl. And ladies dressed in full-on poufy dresses skating. I think I could actually benefit from this kind of skating outfit because if I fall on my rump, I'll be well padded. LOL. I love the trees in the corners with snow on them and I love the ice skaters interwoven in the silk. They are so pronounced and stand out alot which I love. So whenever I move and the light reflects off the scarf, the ice skaters interwoven into the silk stand out. I don't have many "vintage" scarves in my collex, but this ones a keeper. Whenever I look at it, I'm transported back to a different time. Nobody in the scarf is skating and looking at their cell phones!!

So with this scarf and the navy border, I gave up trying to wear navy with it along time ago because most of the time, the navy top I have on clashes with the wide navy border in the scarf. So I usually just wear a black top with it and I think it works fine. There are so many different shades of navy and it's just too hard trying to get it right with this scarf. I can actually tie this scarf so it's more subdued and all you really see are trees. But I think it's more fun to show the ice skating gals in the corners so I usually just go with an old-fashioned bias fold secured in the front with a scarf ring or knot.

And it helps that the green in this scarf picks up on my malachite kelly. So here are some pics for your viewing pleasure. I know many of you have this scarf and if so, by all means, post it! I love seeing the other cws and it will help us all get in the holiday mood. And sorry again for the black bars in my photos. It's actually quite frustrating because I have to take screen shots of the originals on my phone because tPF is still telling me my original files are too big. And the screen shots are much poorer quality and look a bit dingy. Argh. Very frustrating.

I'm so disenchanted wit the current offerings and the turn H have taken in [IMO] cutting corners, so what a delight to see this beautiful jacquard.
It is totally charming and one I've often contemplated, s thanks for showing it.
I really like your pairing with a black dress too, nice and modern and pared down looking.

Thank you again for this informative post, @MYH! I wasn't aware of the different weaving process. So neat! I think your photos look great, especially with your beautiful malachite K! Looks great with black. So puts me in the mood for the holidays. I love this time of the year!:heart:

Oh we are twins!! Your pix are beautiful and I love the knot with the lady on your chest, LOL. For once a person is not upside down in a scarf knot! I will post some pix soon. I have been waiting for THE HOLIDAY MOOD to wash over me, but maybe you're right - we should bring it on ourselves. Thanks for this, myh!!!

Frou frou - I'm with you!! I have barely liked any of the recent offerings as well and definitely feel like less effort and attention to detail have gone into recent scarves. In this scarf - I see alot of shadows giving it depth and I haven't seen that recently. Many of the scarves look flat to me unfortunately. Honestly, I think the scarves are not a high profit margin category for H and they want to scale back on it even though it was what drew alot of us into the maison. And I think that's a real shame. So I'm holding onto my older scarves for dear life and hope to enjoy them into my old age.

This is such a sweet vintage find for the holidays. "Charming" is certainly the right word. Thanks for sharing this one.
You're welcome!

Oh yes! There are scarves call jacquards and some say (I don't know if it's true) that the counterfeiters don't bother trying to copy these because it's too hard and time consuming. They are really charming and darling and very unique.

I was thinking the same thing!! Thank goodness the skater is not upside down.I believe you have a red one? or is it a more unusual cw? my memory is failing me. Can't wait to see you pics.

MYH, thank you so much for your usual insights into H design and history. I also own Joie d'Hiver, my only holiday scarf. I do love the intricate detail on this design, and the little jacquard skaters are adorable. Here are a couple of archive pics of me wearing mine!

The photos of Joies d'Hiver just keep getting better and better! You got the couple skating right on your stomach!!! At first, I thought it was two ladies but it's actually one lady and one man and I'm wondering why he is wearing a feather head accessory!

I absolutely adore how you bring out the red and navy in your scarf. Just wonderful! You gals have given me so much inspiration. I'm going to work on my outfit instead of being so lazy and just wearing black.
