The photos of Joies d'Hiver just keep getting better and better! You got the couple skating right on your stomach!!! At first, I thought it was two ladies but it's actually one lady and one man and I'm wondering why he is wearing a feather head accessory!

I absolutely adore how you bring out the red and navy in your scarf. Just wonderful! You gals have given me so much inspiration. I'm going to work on my outfit instead of being so lazy and just wearing black.
Awww, thanks so much MYH, it is actually quite unusual for me to not be wearing just black, but somehow with this festive design I kind go all out so to speak...although looking at the pictures I can see that the red pants and blue sweater was a bit of overkill LOL!

LOVE! LOVE! Especially with your red sweater. It looks great on you. Your navy border looks way more vibrant than mine. I blame it on my condensed pic. Thank you for sharing. You got alot more of the scarf to show in your cowboy knot. I must work on that.
My own pix actually look awful on my laptop. Everyone else's look vibrant. So go figure. But thank you! The cowboy is more of a "throw" than a "knot." I'm pretty sure I didn't make it out of the house without making it more secure, LOL!

MYH, thank you so much for your usual insights into H design and history. I also own Joie d'Hiver, my only holiday scarf. I do love the intricate detail on this design, and the little jacquard skaters are adorable. Here are a couple of archive pics of me wearing mine!

Look at you tiny thing wearing it as a blouse!!! Awesome. And that tie with the accordion flair. So envious of your tying skillz.

Hi Silkies! How have you been? Sorry for being MIA (again) but I was away on a Thanksgiving destination vacay and was a bit busy trying to get my life back to regular working order when I came home. I'm sure you all know how it is! If you're in a part of the world that celebrates Thanksgiving, happy belated turkey day.

So we are officially in the home stretch for the holidays and I thought I would show one of the vintage holiday scarves I have. My fascination with this scarf began when I was deep in the throes of collecting and I became fascinated with jacquards. This was before H issued the tattoo scarves that many of us have. I wanted to see the pattern woven into the silk that everyone talked about! So I considered many...luna park (love carousels), napoleon (bees -), Les Fetes du Roi Soleil has fireworks - my head was spinning. I needed to see and own a jacquard! So after careful consideration (haha), I decided on Joies d'Hiver. I loved the ice skating people and the costumes they are wearing in the scarf. Luckily, there are many for sale on evilbay. It must have been a super popular scarf when it was issued because there is no shortage of this design on the reseller market. But I wanted one in good condition and finding one is not that easy because it's vintage and well - I'm sure the owner has worn it. And I was and still am a bit nervous to wash it. Has anyone tried? Will the dye run?

So I zeroed in on a cw and and found one that looked like it had been well cared for. When it arrived, I was overjoyed! I'm usually not a vintage scarf gal, in fact I prefer the more modern designs, but this scarf is so charming. In it, there is a man helping a woman put her skates on (seriously, don't think I have seen this happen at the rink ever). I have only seen a man help a child put on skates but not their adult GFs or wives. And there is a ice-skating group of two men on either side of one woman and skating with her. Perfect - two guys for every girl. And ladies dressed in full-on poufy dresses skating. I think I could actually benefit from this kind of skating outfit because if I fall on my rump, I'll be well padded. LOL. I love the trees in the corners with snow on them and I love the ice skaters interwoven in the silk. They are so pronounced and stand out alot which I love. So whenever I move and the light reflects off the scarf, the ice skaters interwoven into the silk stand out. I don't have many "vintage" scarves in my collex, but this ones a keeper. Whenever I look at it, I'm transported back to a different time. Nobody in the scarf is skating and looking at their cell phones!!

So with this scarf and the navy border, I gave up trying to wear navy with it along time ago because most of the time, the navy top I have on clashes with the wide navy border in the scarf. So I usually just wear a black top with it and I think it works fine. There are so many different shades of navy and it's just too hard trying to get it right with this scarf. I can actually tie this scarf so it's more subdued and all you really see are trees. But I think it's more fun to show the ice skating gals in the corners so I usually just go with an old-fashioned bias fold secured in the front with a scarf ring or knot.

And it helps that the green in this scarf picks up on my malachite kelly. So here are some pics for your viewing pleasure. I know many of you have this scarf and if so, by all means, post it! I love seeing the other cws and it will help us all get in the holiday mood. And sorry again for the black bars in my photos. It's actually quite frustrating because I have to take screen shots of the originals on my phone because tPF is still telling me my original files are too big. And the screen shots are much poorer quality and look a bit dingy. Argh. Very frustrating.

As always effortlessly chic and stylish! I love love love reading your thoughts dear MYH behind your scarf choices! This scarf is perfect for your malachite K[emoji173]️[emoji173]️

You absolutely nailed it Bova!
Thank you both momasaurus and eternallove4bag, but I have to add that I rarely take to time to tie the more intricate knots lately...I am more apt to throw on with a simple bias fold and double knot or MYH and pocketbook pup's, bias fold wrapped closely around the neck Parisian knot... I forget the name it was dubbed :confused1:

You know how I have fallen for green lately MYH. This is such a darling scarf, especially the jacquard pattern on it too. I love my few holiday silks. I try to wear them as much as possible since literally it is two months of necktime. There was a thread about the older scarves and how the dyes might run. It would be best to test a small corner perhaps before attempting? I think as long as it is cold water and quickly swishing and moving the silk it should be okay. The dyes were less stable at a point before the 70's? I am guessing scarves before the 60's might be at risk. Someone to ask might be birkinmary as she has a blog about the vintage scarves, or seton. HTH!

My CW is navy, same as yours! Archival pix: the famous ascot cowl and a cowboy. View attachment 3541552View attachment 3541553

I'm loving this design more by the minute, it's the nostalgia thing…so so romantic.
You both look truly lovely in it too .

Frou frou - I'm with you!! I have barely liked any of the recent offerings as well and definitely feel like less effort and attention to detail have gone into recent scarves. In this scarf - I see alot of shadows giving it depth and I haven't seen that recently. Many of the scarves look flat to me unfortunately. Honestly, I think the scarves are not a high profit margin category for H and they want to scale back on it even though it was what drew alot of us into the maison. And I think that's a real shame. So I'm holding onto my older scarves for dear life and hope to enjoy them into my old age.

I'm sorry to have lost that scarf madness that made me comb each Season's thread.
It may be a case with me of having reached a point where I am scarfed out , however if the wares were on a par with previous years maybe I'd be less jaded...

I think we are right about the relative flatness of the designs . I notice a preponderance of very graphic geometric scarves. I love those but loved them more when they were the exception rather than the norm .

I have a vintage H scarf from 1959 and I've washed it at home. As you mentioned, cold water and quickly swirling without letting it soak idly is the key. I also added a bit of white vinegar to the water as I've read on TPF before; not sure if it made the difference or not but I didn't get any running. Of course, my 57 year old scarf was definitely "loved" and thus not pristine to begin with. If it was near perfect I may have been more apprehensive about washing it myself. Also, never wring them out; just gently press the water out and lay them flat between two towels to dry.

Thanks for the reminder Boston. I also use a color catcher for bright silks just in case they are prone to running, especially since I have a lot of white background scarves too.

There are more 'flatter', less detailed (or should I say fine) designs. Apparat des Plaines a rare recent exception with more that 34 shades on my caramel cw and shading 2die4. I don't mind if a scarf's 2D-ness is part of the charm (like most of Alice Shirley's) I'm guessing that these have proved popular and not just with me, but there seem to be fewer elegant scarf designs in the manner of Passage a Moscou, Pegase d'Hermes and Quintessence from only a few years ago which is such a shame. I'm glad I like a few popular scarves because it seems I'm usually out of step with the majority. I get that H want to entice a 'newer' set into wearing scarves and I do like some of the quirky/graphic/animal print designs but there's a limit, and I preferred those more when they were a bit 'different' rather than the H norm. Still buying the Appaloosa though!
