MISSONI for Target?

Have you ever considered that perhaps many of us purchase designer goods because of the quality?

Yes, just as I stated in the above post, I think most people buy designer pieces because they believe they're buying something "special". And by "special" I mean quality, design, fit, etc not just a label brand name. I wouldn't pay the extra $ for designer items if I believed the quality was poor-no matter what the brand name is!

Chanel could easily do a Target line with costume jewelry and tweedy flaps. I mean the regular costume jewelry has only gone up in price and down in quality anyways. I love Chanel but I'm over the priceing. Its nuts.

As for Missoni, I love the Target line. It got me to try out some colors/prints I wouldn't have and I ended up ordering regular Missoni towels because of it. I also remember being younger and loving fashion but not having the funds. I think its great people have so many options now.

I agree with you about the Chanel costume jewelry going up in price and down in quality. Some of the pieces feel so cheap. It's sad.

I also remember what it was like being young & in college and just dreaming of owning a Chanel bag one day! I couldn't afford it then & that made me appreciate it that much more when I finally got one. :smile1:

I'm absolutely not saying that I "liked Missoni because the label is expensive and not everyone can have it". Chanel suits and other various pieces of their clothing line are very expensive and I do not like them @ all. I like Missoni because they produce unique items that not everyone else wears! Well they used to.....now anyone can just go to Target and get a "Missoni" dress or scarf. BUT, I will say that I believe people buy designer items because they think they're buying something "special". If everyone could go out and buy a $15,000 Hermes bag they wouldn't be so coveted and cherished and there probably wouldn't be a forum dedicated to them!

I haven't seen the Target items so I don't know if they're cheap, etc but I'll take your word on it.

Actually, the irony of the whole thing is that I CANNOT just go and buy the Target pieces that I want. I haven't seen them in person either and I may never see them in person-- (I refuse to pay M Missoni prices for the Target line and that is what some of the pieces are selling for on ebay). They are too hard to obtain. The crazy thing about this collab is that some of the pieces seem to be more coveted than main line Missoni. I don't understand it. I know I have gone through much more trouble to get the few items of the Target line that I have, than I have for any of my other Missoni pieces. :confused1::laugh:

As for exclusivity, I went to a function earlier this year where at least 95% of the women there were carrying Birkins. You would have stood out in a positive manner, imo, if you were carrying a Walmart bag. ;)

Also, this is only the second designer collab that I have bought anything from--and the other one wasn't at Target. I'm staying away from their collabs in the future. It would be much less stressful for me to just go and by more "regular" Missoni. :D

That is the ONLY reason I would pay the higher price for these items. And I'm finding more and more that some luxury brands have turned into just "labels" and the quality is not there anymore. But for the ones that continue to produce quality goods, I think the price is justified. ;)

I purchase designer goods for the quality. I have a love for fancy. Fancy fabrics and fancy prints, certain signature things certain designers do. But rarely do i ever pay full price for anything. Lol. Just my bags, because LV never ever goes on sale...

Maybe when the European financial system collapses the dollar will finally go up and Chanel prices will go down. :smile1:

i wanted to chime in that it depends on the item. Some of the knits of the Target line are amazing quality. Better than my Vince, LaRok, Halston Heritage, Theory, and other contemporary brand sweaters. Like anything, depends on what you buy. i personally think this line for Target was done brilliantly and extremely well and that it in absolutely no way cheapens the brand. I usually am very against collabs but this one was genius. Besides, let's be honest, if Missoni did "sell out" wouldn't it have been with the M Missoni line? It is like the difference between Donna Karen and DKNY... Do you still carry your Marc Jacobs bags even though he has the much less expensive Marc by Marc Jacobs line? Of course you do! But if this is a "sell out" isn't that a sell out too? He is My Favorite designer btw! But i don't have a distaste for my LV bags because they are designed by someone who also has a line of $200 bags... Just sayin'!

I own Missoni orange label and I did pick up a dress from the Target collaboration, so far I don't think it cheapens it or that they have 'sold out' so to speak. I guess it's a matter of personal opinion in this case. Just that for me I think it's good for brand awareness :)

I don't get some of the comments along the lines of ..'now that missoni sold out to target I don't even or won't even wear my missoni orange label or m missoni anymore..'

I think anyone who, buys items for the love of brand, quality and look would not care. I think it sounds foolish. If you were comfortable in your own skin, and wear your items because you think they look good, why would it matter..? lol

Also, there where a few comments on oohh chanel would never do this.. ect. Didn't Karl Lagerfeld just do a colab with a major department store in the US?

I think that the actual Missoni for Target items themselves were cheap and something I would never personally be interested in; however, to say that you are not interested in wearing something you were once enamored with simply because a less expensive line was produced comes off as rather pretentious. So basically you are saying that you only liked Missoni because the label is expensive and not everyone can have it? :shrugs: That is how I am interpreting this -- correct me if I am wrong!

I completely agree with you Jenay. Some people like to wear certain lines because they are expensive brand names and not everyone can own it.

Oh goodness. Cmon now. No one called you "elitist". Here is your post from the other thread (the bolded is what I responded to):

BUT, that's exactly what high priced, beautiful designer items are made for, an elite group of people who can afford them! You don't have to be rich to afford designer items-some people have to save up for that awesome, $3000 Chanel bag. It makes it that much more special when your able to actually buy it! If everyone in the world was able to walk around with a coveted Chanel or LV it would make me much less likely to buy them!!

My response:

Um...I wouldn't consider people who have designer bags "elite". A bag doesn't define that. Anyway, perhaps you should keep these comments in your new thread and leave us at peace with our thread over here! Keep the drama at bay

Like I said in that thread, let's just not start drama. Okay? :smile1:

OMG that made me crack up :roflmfao: "elite group of people" I'm not elite, I'm 21 years old and can afford a Chanel (and own many!) does not make me "elite"!

if you go to yoox.com you won't find chanel, hermes or louis vuitton on sale there. ever. or the outnet

but you will find lanvin, jimmy choo, alexander McQueen, missoni and so forth

that's why those labels do collabs

I think this collaboration did not water down the Missoni line at all. I do have some of the Orange Label "Made in Italy" scarves and yes...there is a difference (one would expect that!). But this line did not disappoint.

I think it speaks volumes about the Missoni family and their great quality control over the items licensed. And I think the broader appeal is that they had a vast range of items to choose from and coordinate with. I understand there were over 400 pieces of merchandise and most items very top quality (especially for a "Target" item).

I have seen the spill over effect... Missoni items on other sites selling out quickly. Great marketing!

And some ladies in the Wardrobe forum report that someone asked (when they are wearing a "real" Missoni) ..."Is that Missoni for Target?" And they just smile and have the confidence that it really does not matter.

In the end... it's all just fashion anyway. :smile1:

BTW - Some of the other past collaborations I have seen were really disappointing and I wouldn't buy them either. Let's hope Missoni sets a new precedent!
