Hi everyone! Anyone know how exchanges affect the SA? I received a gift from someone else that I would like to return and put the amount towards a more expensive item with my SA. How does that work?

Hi everyone! I would like to know your recommendation on how to return a kind gesture that my SA has had with us. For some time we established a fairly friendly relationship with our SA but he ended up moving to another job. And since then, a few months ago, we were transferred with a new SA. From the beginning she has treated us very well, but also, recently for my birthday she sent home some flowers that came in her name (I don't know if the store paid for it or it was her personally). The fact is that not the new SA, but the previous SA, as we were quite friendly with him, one day he told us that it was his birthday soon... but he made it very clear that they were forbidden to receive gifts and that we should please not bring never any detail for him. I also don't know if this is the inflexible rule or it was just his personal opinion. But the fact is that I would like to thank the beautiful gesture that our SA has had with the flowers, but I also do not want to bring her a gift or something if that is not allowed and it will be a problem for her. Any recommendations or similar experience? thank you

You could send something like cookies or cupcakes that could be enjoyed by all staff.

My home store allows no gifts at all. I found this out recently as I wanted to give my SA a little gift to say thank you, and she said they have the policy set across the board for all staff members. I thought if any food/chocolates could be shared by the staff, but apparently not allowed. Not sure if this is the same in other countries, this is in Australia.

I don’t think that would have a negative impact on your SA as you’re not returning something you bought from her.

But I read somewhere that when you exchange or get store credit it has to be used up in one transaction? I’m not sure if that’s true or not but for example if you have $10000 in exchange, you have to get $10,000 of goods in the same transaction. Someone even said it had to be from the same department. But I don’t think that’s true bc I’ve returned mensware in exchange for FJ. But the amount thing might be true as it may be to cumbersome to keep track of credits?

I think what you’re describing is for exchanging items originally purchased in another country. In essence, an exchange is really just a return and a new purchase with that store credit. @rebeday Do be advised though that the return will hurt the account of the person who gifted it to you. I’d personally be pretty annoyed to have a gift returned against my account without being given the opportunity to make it right myself.

Thanks for pointing out the nuance of returns for different countries. That makes sense.

On another note, what if your friend doesn’t want to bother you or offend you by returning smth. Unless both of you are regular Hermes shoppers I think most people would just take the gift in and exchange for something else more suitable to their taste without letting the gifter know?

The gifter will most likely find out the gift was returned; if they had a good relationship with their SA, the SA would probably make a comment while reviewing their purchase history/profile. So it may be best to give your friend a heads up before making the return IMO.

Correct. But most people that don’t shop at Hermes probably wouldn’t assume that the gifter could find out.

Edit: but yes in this case if the OP was going to return and she’s starting to build a profile and her friend also shops at Hermes then yes probably better to just keep the gift altogether.

My SA once told me that they thought someone I gifted something returned it (it turned out to be some other completely unrelated person who happened to return the exact same item at my store soon after I bought my gift. I knew this immediately because I hadn't even gifted out the thing yet when my SA told me this!). It wasn't even a big ticket item if my memory serves. Something like tableware or perfume. Like this wasn't even something on my profile (since it wasn't my friend) but my SA just chatted with me about it wondering if that's who I gifted. I do have a very casual / friendly chit-chat relationship with my SA so this obviously can vary per everyone's relationship and situation.

But yeah I'd say it's definitely possible that the gifter finds out if you returned a gift. So if you can, letting them know would be a good idea IMO!

Your sa should have been more careful. Could have started a feud on accident

I include a gift receipt with a gift so the recipient can choose something more to their liking if they prefer. My SA and store know and respect this and never update me. I always hope to pick a great gift but if the gift recipient can find something more to their liking and - I hope - have a fabulous experience at Hermes picking out something for themselves, it can be a great outcome.
