^^ chanelspell, have you read it?

I didn't think she would be able to convince me, but it is so well written and researched, that I feel much more knowledgeable about the luxury market. Read it and tell me what you think!

Jayne I've been just searching posts about this book!I realised that the last sentence cited above is not linked to the previous paragraph.
This means taking and "glueing" excerps only to justify our point, and this is unthinkable of course!
On the other hand I remember that when I had too become furious at the possibility Chanel bags "are made" in China, a Fellow Fer said that the book
excludes some brands, like Hermes,Chanel and one more -I don't remember which-from the list of those who have their products really made in China!!!
I have not read this book yet and to be honest I don't want to buy it because I have really got pissed off at the thought that we might have been targetted as potential buyers...of it ,if that makes sense!
I will do appreciate though ANYONE who has read it to tell me what exactly the author says for Chanel!!!

That's exactly how I felt! I didn't want to read the book and get pissed off! It made me sad, not pissed off though.

Actually, I don't remember reading that Chanel was not made in China. I got the impression that some Chanel bags could most certainly be made in China. Does anyone here, know for sure?

I know this wasn't addressed directly to me, however I am no fool chanelspell. Your thinly veiled snide comment above is transparent. I am more than happy to document where I got the information and it's not the first time I have copied & pasted this excerpt. As I posted, it's an excerpt from one of the many editorial reviews. Go to google, select a sentence from the excerpt, C & P it in the google search box and voilà.

Oh by the way, feel free to ask me clarify anything as I read this forum too, although I'm definitely not the most prolific poster.

An Example of one of My Well Documented Posts:http://forum.purseblog.com/chanel/is-that-just-plain-inflation-194503-4.html#post4154715

I also recommend you borrow the book from your public library or buy a copy so you can read it for yourself.

Considering that a former Gap corporate exec is now running the show at Chanel, it would not surprise me in the least bit if the bags were made in China. She would have the contacts in China to make this happen. Imagine being in the board room and someone is touting substantially lower production costs, higher production numbers and couple it with the price hikes we've seen of later, it would be such a temptation not to test the waters and see the result.

It's not out of the question that luxury goods are not being made in China. Manufacturers are given the build specifications and cost limits and they make the product within those guidelines. Depending on what the specs and constraints are will determine the quality of product produced, ideally.

I do know that in the 80s when I began loving Chanel, the bags were made in Europe. That's what 25 years ago. A lot changes in 25 years. There is no way we are going to know the truth unless the company put it out there or someone does an investigative report (and it sure as heck isn't going to come from Chanel.)

All the hoopla aside, I love looking at Chanel jackets, shoes, purses -- although sometimes I laugh and choke at the item and the price asked, but that's me. Look at the couture line sometime on their website. It's a work of art, ethereal beauty, sometimes unworldly -- look at the silhouettes, the use of fabrics, the cohesiveness, the drape -- it's spectacular. It didn't come from a woman who came up through the Gap. It's Karl's creation and you can love it sometimes, laugh at it sometimes but it always makes you stop and stay for a moment or a while longer. It's the art of Chanel (without the corporate baggage).

I wrote Chanel last night. I asked them:
1) Why the price increase
and
2) Where are Chanel bags made, and are any pieces of the bags made in China?

Here's the response I just now got:

Dear Jennifer,

Thank you for your inquiry regarding CHANEL Handbags.

CHANEL uses only the finest-quality materials in the world, along with
superior craftsmanship. A single handbag alone can require a process
involving 180 steps, all of which is produced by hand in France.
Although the cost of production is considerable, CHANEL does not want
compromise this high level of quality; subsequently, the increase in
price.

Select styles will have their prices increased beginning in November
2007.

Thanks for sharing your response purly. Was it by email? Just curious.

It looks like a boilerplate response and I did not see any disclaimer re: China.

The reasons given sound great although there's too much information out there in the public domain for us not to know some of the reasons behind their astronomical price increase strategy.

Hmm. Not the most definitive answer, that's for sure. I still think the flaps must be made in France... but the others? She never really answered the question.
