mine puffs out at the side too!? unlike that pic - i've had mine for a week! i think 1999 it's just the way their made now :S damn italy!

i don't think so as the new french made ones are fine and don't puff out at the sides. both are the new caviar. te construction of the italy made jumbos seems really bad and i wouldn't be surprised if chanel have had loads of complaints already.

chanel is a french designer brand....why cant they stick within france for production? it makes it more original, and it keeps things the way it used to be.
Money. The company makes a huge profit if they find a factory that makes the bags cheaper. We're still paying top dollar for our bags, but the cost to them is much less.

My new Big Baby Cabas is made in Italy and so is my new MC tote. I always thought "Made in Italy" was a good thing. The Italians know their leather!

Of course, after reading the Dana Thomas book, I know that they were probably made in China with the handles attached in Italy.

I'm starting to feel like a real idiot.

I'm really mad at the thought that our beloved and costly Chanel bags are not even made in Italy!
We pay the heck for the guaranteed Chanel craftmanship and this is supposed to be "made in France"!(on the classics at least!)
I don't say that I mind bags made in some countries as long as they are wellmade but on specific high end brands I want the originality and legend they so well advertise! :cursing:

Chanel purses are only ever made in Italy or France.

Fake Chanels are made in China, but they stamp it as made in "France" or "Italy". (lies)
Some of us think that Chanel makes some bags in China and adds the handles, zippers, etc in Europe, to be able to stamp "France" or "Italy" on the bag. It's just the way things are, in the marketing and manufacturing world.

^^ Maybe not the Flaps, Swanky, but some of the other pieces could be.

After reading the Dana Thomas book, my perception of the luxury world is forever changed. :shrugs:

Me too Jayne1.

An Excerpt from one of many editorial reviews re: "Deluxe: How Luxury Lost its Luster"
"The book, Deluxe: How Luxury Lost Its Luster, is written by Dana Thomas, a journalist who has covered style and the luxury business for The Washington Post, Newsweek and The New York Times Magazine from Paris for the past fifteen years. Thomas digs deep into the dark side of the luxury industry to uncover all the secrets has written an exposé on luxury goods and designer bags in particular."
"...Enter the villains of Ms. Thomas' book, the 35 leading luxury brands that now control over 60 percent of the global market. The list includes Prada, Gucci, Giorgio Armani, Hermes and Chanel, all of which have revenue in excess of $1 billion a year. But the "Mr. Big" of the big luxury is LVMH Mo‘t Hennessy Louis Vuitton, an $11 billion conglomerate whose labels also include Dior, Fendi and Berluti."...

A Post Re: QC issues with highend bags
1. "...the profit margin is astounding: for most luxury brands the profit is between ten and twelve times the cost to make the item. At Vuitton, it's as much as thirteen times." According to Miuccia Prada, "The handbag is the miracle of the company."

2. "Yes, luxury handbags are made in China. Top brands. Brands that you carry. Brands that deny outright that their bags are made in China make their bags in China, not in Italy, not in France, not in the United Kingdom.

...Each brand made the manufacture sign a cofidentiality agreement stipulating that he could not reveal the fact that he produced their products in China. Furthermore, the manufacturer doesn't let the competition know who else he is producing...The change came in the mid-1990s when Coach decided to move a small portion of its production from the United States to China. Coach's stock value increased a whopping 1,270 percent in the first five years ...other luxury brands quietly began to look into producing leather goods in China.

3. "The brands have little tricks to get around the China label. One brand's "Made in China" label is actually a sticker affixed to the outer package. The luxury brand rips it off when the goods arrive in Italy and replaces it with a "Made in Italy" label. Another has the entire bag made in China except the for the handle. The bag is shipped to Italy, where the Italian-made handle is attached."

4. The following lists are not complete:
Louis Vuitton Moet Hennesy (LVMH) --It has more than 50 brands. Some are Louis Vuitton, Givenchy, Dior, Bliss, Michael Kors, Marc Jacobs, Celine, e-Luxury.com, Duty Free Shoppers (DFS-majority owned)
Gucci Group--YSL, Sergio Rossi, Stella McCartney, Alexander McQueen, Balenciaga, Bottega Veneta

Independently owned--Armani, Versace, Dolce & Gabbana, Hermes, Chanel..."

Note: I believe companies, e.g. Chanel, have no incentive to change or improve the quality control issues of their products if people keep buying them. Also I believe written feedback by the customer to the manufacturer is prudent as well as helpful.

I don't know about Chanel for sure, but you are RIGHT ON for many other "luxury" brands.
