LV QUALITY CONTROL --- WHAT IS GOING ON??

my thought is that machines are doing a majority of the sewing now to keep up with the increased demand for new styles. LV seems very fast fashion now with so many new styles released regularly. machinery contributes to manufacturing defects across all the models, which is why it's not just one model with complaints, but several.

They have always machine-stitched their items. Who knows what's going on. Workers are probably told to just work as fast as they can as the demand for the products is incredibly high.

LV has been using machines to sew for a looong time, if not always. Using machines themselves are not the issue.

I have one lower price range Hermes bag, loves it. I'm like you, not loving Chanel I don't know why just don't. I'm saving for my next Hermes too.
I've been thinking about venturing over into Hermes for awhile. The Evelyne caught my eye. I wish it wasn't open though bc that's what's holding me back. I was thinking about getting an empreinte speedy but I'm afraid due to the quality issues I've read about

Vuitton used to be "haute couture" ; for me, now, it's no more the case.

I am curious as to what you define as haute couture, as my understanding of it is custom, and hand constructed from start to finish. I don't think that has been the case for LV for any of our lifetimes or beyond. Sure, a select few clients in last few decades (and now) can still get "custom" products, but I still doubtful those "by hand start to finish" part. I have definitely never had any impression of LV as haute couture.

well, manufacturing defects in bags are caused by machines and not people, so machines contribute to the issue for sure, and i'm sure they use more of them now than they ever did in the past b/c the market is larger and they need to make more bags. the majority of the complaints about LV are manufacturing defects first and foremost, and that people (secondarily) are not checking for those defects in QC. people don't cause the tears in leather and canvas, or missed stitches, or misalignment, but machines do, so you have to blame some of it on mass production of their items. it ultimately doesn't matter to me b/c it's not for me to figure out. it's LV's problem, and they need to fix their production flow so that the prices they charge for bags are justified.

??? The term manufacturing is not restricted to manufacturing with machines, it includes everything involved in production of something including handwork. I guess I don't follow as people handstitching can cause defects too. I sure have had my share of sewing fails! Yes, including misalignments. Machines are much better for even stitching, etc. But yes, the point is LV has been using sewing machines for, well, likely since they started making bags. If anything machines these days are more reliable, more programmable, and far better...so I do not blame the machines, but the people operating the machines, rushing product through, and QC.

Yes, increased production may mean more is being rushed or slipped through but I do not understand the premise that machines themselves are to blame. People do still operate and program machinery, and people do still inspect product (supposedly) for quality control.

This is a huge reason why I've been really into the pre-loved market and looking for vintage bags. Even the bags 10 years ago were of much better quality.

My Papillon 19 is fully leather lined, no popped stitching, durable thicker canvas, and just overall really well made. The Favorite MM in DE that I got in 2015 has popped stitches and is starting to get that weird line across the length of the bag on the canvas. The pleating on either side is far from even, and the canvas is showing wear. Now, I know that there is normal wear and tear on bags, but my Papillon 19 is 14 years old and has aged much better.

So lets be real here – ALL designer bags have their share of quality issues whether Chanel, Hermes, Gucci. . .whatever. And ALL those designers have been through a period where stuff was just bad for a stretch. Honestly in my years of buying LV I have only had two issues with bags from LV and the problem was rectified immediately. Now I am not saying there are not problems because clearly there are but I also feel there is a false perception that a bag should be 100 percent perfect because we paid over a grand for it. Nothing absolutely nothing is perfect but we can ask for darn near perfect – I get that. I also know that the excitement of buying the bag takes over our senses to actually look over the bag before leaving the boutique. Now when ordering over the phone from a boutique unless you have an SA who really knows you and how you are when buying bags you are not going to get someone who actually tries to make sure the bag is darn near perfect for you. At the end of the day they are trying to make a sale and with them all on commission now believe me the sale is first and foremost. Ordering online yes there absolutely should be someone in a quality control type roll who is looking over the bag before shipping. Does this happen before something is shipped – maybe, maybe not. I have purchased online and in the boutique and have had a great experience with both. Will I generally buy a bag that has been on the shelf – NO. A bag that has sat in a drawer – sure if after I have looked over and it meets my standards. But honestly I have my SA order the bags I want to purchase from the warehouse and she will only let me know it is ready for pick up after she has looked it over. Then I look it over once I get to the boutique. Has there been a time when a bag arrived and my SA text me and says she is ordering another because I will not like the one that came – only twice. To give LV the benefit of the doubt some of the things are a little hard to detect upon first glance. Now bags for sure you need to make sure you inspect are the Neverfull and Speedy’s- these bags have been known to have something or the other wrong with them that one person or another may not like. These two bags there needs to be a few to look at to choose from. That has been that way for quite some years now and I believe that is due to the amount of them that are made. Yes do machine play a part – absolutely. When I hear someone state the bags are hand made I want to laugh because that is not true any longer. No possible way would LV be able to keep up with the demand if all of them were hand made and stitched. Now are there bags that are just prone to issues – sure but that’s when you do your research before buying and decide whether you want to take the chance or not. Some bags wear differently from others and not all of them are meant for daily heavy use. For instance I have a Pouchette Metis – have had it going on the third year and it is just fine (looks great actually) – where others have had problems. Am I saying I won’t have a problem – I do not know the answer to that but will cross that bridge when and if it happens. This was a bag that has had issues and I decided to take that chance. Also these bags are not indestructible just because you paid thousands none of them are and there will be wear just like anything else. You have to take care of them properly.

So with all that been said I think we need to be our own quality control. If a bag does not meet your standards return for a new one or choose something else or yes a different brand. Asking everyone else’s opinion on whether you should return something or not is useless – if the bag does not fit your standards of darn near perfection then it is what it is – no one else’s opinion is going to change that – right? Same goes for asking is this normal – what may be normal for someone else may not be normal for me. Only your opinion really matters at the end of the day. So does LV need to step it up sure maybe but I think we as buyers need to as well. . .

WOW, I DID NOT KNOW THEY ARE ALL ON COMMISSION NOW. Really? They are all on commission? Wow.
I am not expecting bags to be absolutely perfect, but I am expecting them to be near perfect. Quality has to be up there for a luxury item. You wouldn't expect a five-star hotel having more bedbugs than a regular motel would you?
I am extremely careful with my items, to the point that I baby them, and yet they still turn defective (the favorite mm and the epi neverfull were both living in my closet, taken out fewer than 5 times each).
And finally, what I have observed is a declining in quality and quality control, based on my personal observations and experience. My quality standard has been constant over the years. My expectations have not changed. I have always had a very sharp eye for differences in pattern, straightness of things, that kind of stuff. And what I have observed is that new LV bags on a large scale are becoming less "done." The stitches, the glazing, the straightness of pattern, the evenniss of the canvas.... It is really a sad business.

The biggest concern about buying bags at LV used to be the availability (somehow stuff I like are always more limited). But nowadays, I HAVE TO inspect the bags in person, and to select one among few, if they even have any extra (they often don't for the stuff I want).

I just don't want to do it anymore. Who has that kind of time to go to store that often?

The problem is, I still have a lot of credits there.... The long list of activities y'all see on the main post was my quest of using up that credit, because I really want to be mentally done about it. But even with credit, I can't pick up anything I like that has decent quality. I had to convince my husband to get a bag and a wallet (trust me, he is not into this at all) to spend some of this credit. But I still have some left. I think I just have to wait. Maybe November/December there will be something unique to pick up... But I feel mentally drain and I shouldn't feel that way by shopping at my favorite bag place. So I think its time for me to move on....

They're not all on commission. In Europe atleast. They do earn comission but figures are super low. It's higher for stuff like perfumes than it is for bags. Unless you get a huge whale that comes in and drops $100k on clothes and watches and stuff your comission is negligible.
