No, the Chinese workers made the bags which the manufacturer had subcontracted to them , in their own houses or apartments......
I watched the programme 2 or 3 years ago.
At that time I had written about it on TPF .
It was an Envoyé Spécial programme, I don't remember the date unfortunately.

Oh, I understand now... that is a serious matter if indeed that is true. Thank you for clarifying & sharing the info.

Here is a bag that is entirely made in the South West of France. The leather is from France too.
I got it on sale. Original price was €245.!

This is very nice! i am currently in a bag handmade in Toronto, Canada. So it is possible to make things this way but often you don't get the "designer" name but i do question sometimes really what you get for it beyond that name. :shrugs:

It is true. Envoyé Spécial journalists are real investigators.
The programme is followed by millions of people, in France and on TV5 Monde.
Everyone was talking about it the following morning.

I re-read the thread and realized I totally misunderstood your post- I presumed the Chinese workers meant they are in China. Now that I read the post you replied to, I see that you probably meant Chinese workers simply as an ethnicity and they are in Italy... do I understand you correctly? So an official manufacturer for Chanel in Italy would subcontract Chinese workers, who are also in Italy, and those workers would bring the bags to their respective houses/apartments (again in Italy) and make them? And presumably bring them back to the manufacturer (for QC and whatnot)?

Sorry about all the questions!

But MCM bags are still of high quality, even though they're made in Korea. MCM bags that cost 1000€ and above are made in Italy.

What do you mean "even though they're made in Korea"? Do you mean that bags made in Korea are generally of low quality?

Just wondering since that hasn't been my experience at all. I have a beautiful Lovcat purse that was made in Korea, which still looks great after 10+ years. Just last visit a few months ago I was totally coveting my mother's Nimue (sp?) purse... very simple, reminiscent of Valextra.

Also fake bags made in Korea are known to be best quality among those who like that sort of stuff, though it is harder to find made in China ones apparently...

Yes, we should not assume that a bag produced in a non European Country is of lesser quality.
My MCM bag is of amazing quality. Possibly my highest quality bag so far.

I am also fine with brands like RM producing in China to keep the prices low. Most of my RM bags are of good quality.

But seeing that Prada produces in China...and the prices are outrageous when the cost of production should be lower...well I can see how not everyone would be happy about that and maybe opt for another designer.

Another worry could be exploited workers...I am wondering how well high end brands in China pay their workers. Likely not close to the salary of Italian Craftsmen.

Yes, that's it! Those Chinese workers are in Italy. No need to say they are exploited by the official manufacturer...who makes profit out f them.
Chanel said they would investigate after the Envoyé Spécial journalists showed them the video.
This was 2 or 3 years ago.
Things must have changed since the programme..... At least I hope so....

I remember one evening in a Middle East electronics boutique.
Three Chinese ladies asking for a made in Japan walkman.....whatever the brand..
The sale assistant said he had none!
Everything in his shop was made in China.
The ladies left empty handed....
I think they would have been delighted to show their friends a made in Japan Sony Walkman, just because......Sony is a Japanese brand...

Same with Longchamp. The Chinese ladies want MIF Le Pliage when they visit a French boutique....
Because Longchamp is a French brand...

My Prada bag and wallets are all made in Italy but were purchased from the boutique. I read somewhere on tpf made in china items are usually from the prada outlets that exist? I'm not 100% sure but i made sure to check my items given the cost..

When people say that a MIF or Made in Italy tag doesn't mean anything.... the same applies to the Made in China tag!
The Chinese also subcontract to.....Vietnam or even......North Korea ( yes, you read it well) and then put the MIC tag! Unknown to their European or American clients of course....
Profit is on all sides !
