I only realized it later, but I bought a Prada from an outlet and it was MIC. While a sister of mine also bought from another outlet, a different style, and it was made in Italy.

That is interesting! I have noticed the quality of their items is not as good as other brands which is disappointing- I still love it just makes me hesitant to purchase again..can't win[emoji53] lol

When people say that a MIF or Made in Italy tag doesn't mean anything.... the same applies to the Made in China tag!
The Chinese also subcontract to.....Vietnam or even......North Korea ( yes, you read it well) and then put the MIC tag! Unknown to their European or American clients of course....
Profit is on all sides !

Not surprising re: NK. Another industry, but most European animation studios subcontract to North Korea as well. European animators only draw key frames and North Korean subcontractors fill in the rest, which is bulk of the work. Some will admit to doing it, many will not due to non-marketing-friendly rep that NK has.

Then again, Disney did too.

Yeah that is true too. I saw a marketplace tv show report that said brands are also making items specifically for outlets only and then marking down prices from original costs that are already too high from their actual value. I also frequently purchase clothing and shoes from outlets and have seen last season stuff as well. My experience with tory burch and kate spade has been made in china. I have not experienced it with prada but do not have an outlet here in Canada so only can purchase from holts or boutiques and have only seen made in italy so far but yeah who knows now so many tricky things happening!

It's true! Some items are made for outlets especially.
We also saw that on French TV. The journalists , with the help of Ralph Lauren staff, compared a polo shirt from the outlet to a shirt from a RL boutique.
The fabric wasn't the same...

I used to work with a young man that was involved with the production end of handbags for several well known companies.
This is what he told me:
Hardware on most bags comes from the same 3 or 4 hardware manufacturers. Coatings are what make the difference.
There is little to no difference between a $50 handbag and a $1500.
Materials: leather or not. Not leather once again comes from 3-5 makers and doesn't really differ between brands.
The biggest factor is SEWING. The competence of the person sewing the bag is the biggest differentiating factor.
Low end bags sold at big box stores are mass produced and made to last one season.
Truly high end bags usually have the best of all craftsmanship and materials. However, hardware only comes from a few places.
Hope this helps ladies.

Sounds about right lol. Kinda like all the "secrets" of the beauty products world. All boils down to how it's all put together.

The prices all go mainly by the name(brand) some are capable of commanding the large figures, other lesser known(or not designers) cannot, yet qualities can be of equal standard or even better on the lower scale of pricepoints/lesser known names.

The dirty little secrets of luxury goods.

My Prada bag and wallets are all made in Italy but were purchased from the boutique. I read somewhere on tpf made in china items are usually from the prada outlets that exist? I'm not 100% sure but i made sure to check my items given the cost..

Outlets are a whole other (related) topic

Most high-end designers that also own outlets have:

1. Bags and other seasonal items that did not sell in up-town stores and so after seasonal sales are 'exiled' to outlets for (the same) discount as in seasonal sales. One year later they are often reduced again.

2. Bags and items that are samples only.

3.1 Bags and items made for outlet only. These have never been on sale anywhere but in outlets and are usually made in simple shapes to use up leftover materials and therefore are naturally cheaper to make. These are often made in different cheaper cost factories which is why they be MIC when the 'normal' stock can be made in Europe, USA etc

3.2 For outlet only items often make up the numbers in outlets since they don't ever want the shelves to be bare.

This ^ is not the same as independent outlets who bid for large bundles of assorted past-season stock

Very good information to know! Thank you

That is also what i saw in the program too! And the comparisons in quality were different.

I wonder if this only applies to bags or other goods also. I have not purchased a bag from an outlet yet, but clothing and accessories from yoox.com for example.

I bet it's valid for clothing and accessories also. My boyfriend is a huge fan of Armani, all the Emporio Armani clothing line is made in china or india.

Wow thanks for explaining!

That would be a total game changer then! If one thinks buying outlet is a good deal and simply a last season, quality item...but in reality it is a lesser quality item? :wtf: 😱

It would be good to know what brands do this and if it applies to all outlets or just certain ones. Yoox is sponsored by Net A Porter, so I had high expectations. I have purchased CO|TE at Yoox which is not a well known brand and the item was from their 2014 collection.
I recently bought a silk foulard by Roberto Cavalli which seems to be of amazing quality. I would be surprised if it was a cheap, MIC outlet version.

Another MIC brand. Sophie Webster.
The made in tag is tiny and squeezed at the bottom of the bag!
The SA had to get a pair of glasses to be able to read it!

Ha! yes! the tiny "ghost" tags on clear material with microscopic font size. I've seen these on mid-range clothing that one might expect to be made in the USA, as the companies do manufacture some of their clothing in the States (Rag & Bone, Theory, come to mind.). I'm guessing they don't want to remind buyers that only *some* of their products are made here.

How sneaky! :D I will have to take a closer look at certain labels.

Oh and I just wanted to say, I am definitely still going to do the list, bit as I am very pregnant and possibly in labor I just wanted to say it will happen after baby ;)
This will also give me enough time to research on sleepless nights as a human milk machine ^^.
