Review of Linjer The Doctor's Bag (navy) and The Sling Bag (chestnut)
I bought mine direct from their website
www.linjer.co since their indiegogo campaign was over. Delivery was very speedy and I received the goods in a few working days. As others have mentioned, the packaging was elegant.
I love both the designs!! Would have very much preferred Champaigne instead of Navy for the Doctor's bag, and Tan instead of Chestnut for the Sling Bag, but well, those were the options available.
The leather looks good and the stitching is high quality, though not perfect after checking the bags all around.
As 1 previous reviewer has commented,
the Doctor's Bag has definitely shrunk! It is way smaller than I expected. I had ordered it based on the pictures I had seen on various sites on the internet, including on this forum and thread, and was willing to pay the price, expecting to be able to use it for work. But the current size is too small for this purpose. It is probably my mistake too for neglecting to check the measurements (stated on the item page), and for assuming it to be the same as the previous batches featured on various blogs.
Future buyers do take note of this!!
It definitely will not take a regular 8 inch tablet. A mini tablet, maybe. I was really bummed by this. If you are like me, who carry more than the bare essentials for work, the current Doctor's bag will need to be complemented with a tote bag.
The tightness of the frame which made it difficult to open (as posted by various reviewers) has been improved, I assume due to feedback and returns. I have no problem opening the bag at all.
The color of the Doctor's Bag is not so much Navy Blue as a dark Teal-Blue. It is also duller than what is shown in the pictures on Linjer's online shop.
I still love the design though! It's sooo adorable and yet has so much character. It looks great hand-carried, slung on the shoulder to one side, or flunk cross-body to the back! (if you don't worry about pickpockets)
The Sling Bag is lovely too. I'm not a big fan of the Chestnut color, but I love the tear-drop shape. And it's just the right size for a fuss-free, casual day out.
Ok. Now on to the
Biggest Disappointment I have about Linjer :
For bags that cost hundreds of dollars (US$345 for The Doctor's Bag; US$245 for The Sling Bag), and especially when Linjer prides itself as using, I quote, "the same material used by Europe's most prestigious luxury houses", "to create minimalist, high quality products",
the hardware, namely the push lock, the swivel snap hooks, the buckles, are all shockingly low-quality and downright appaling!!! From the moment I unwrapped the bags, I was simultaneously thrilled by the beauty of the designs... the "high quality, luxury house-level leather"... and whammed by the discount bin handbag-quality hardware. They are the kind of cheap, plasticky locks, buckles, and snaps you see on pvc handbags that typically cost tens of dollars. Such a jarring combination. What were the manufacturers thinking of??!!
I am not sure if snap hooks of such low-quality will not break, in time, from the swivelling and the weight of a stuffed bag.
Granted, Linjer brands itself as using top-quality leather yet "without the luxury markup". One may reason that less markup means less profit, thus, something has to give, right? Come on, if profit margin is the issue here, I am certain fans of Linjer would not mind paying a few dollars more to exchange the plasticky hardware on their beautiful Linjer bags for decent, high-end hardware worthy of "top quality Italian leather". I have never, ever, seen such hideous, substandard hardware in any bag of mid-priced brands which cost a few hundred dollars.
Would anyone who have purchased their bags from the Indiegogo's campaigns care to chime in as to whether they used to use higher quality hardware? I wonder if it's an issue of the designer's oversight, or that of the manufacturer cutting corners?
In conclusion:
It is obvious that Design is Linjer's strong suit.
Linjer has to get this:
What is the point of using quality Italian leather when the snaps and locks are rubbish?
The dubious quality of the hardware not only dents customers' confidence in the brand, it also makes us wonder: if the company has to save on little things like the hardware, is the leather truly of such top-quality as is claimed?
