Hi Lanvin Lovers:

I was in Nordstrom today, and I saw the most beautiful bag--a black Lanvin Happy shoulder bag in quilted calfskin with brass hardware. I don't know much about Lanvin, so I did a little research, and I have two questions/concerns that I hope you can help me with. Here goes:

(1) Do Lanvin bags tend to be delicate? How do they hold up over time? Would I be better off spending twice the price on a Chanel flap?

(2) Are Lanvin bags seen as copies of Chanel because of the flap and the chain strap?

Any comments would be appreciated. I love the bag, but I want something that's going to last. It won't be my everyday bag (I have a couple Prada bags that I use on the weekdays), but it would see some fairly steady weekend use. Also, I think the bag is prettier than the Chanel flaps, but what is the general mindset on Lanvin? Where does it rank on the handbag social ladder?

Thanks in advance!

Hi mommylawyer,

I have no idea where Lanvin ranks on the handbag social ladder. But they are (I think--someone correct me if I am wrong) the oldest couture house (that is still operating) in France. I don't see them as copies of Chanel at all. To me they are quite different, and I'm not very convinced tha Lanvin needs to copy Chanel to get customers. ;). However, more people will probably recognize that you are carrying a designer bag when you carry a Chanel. I think it's just more widely-recognized by people in general (at least in the U.S.).

I own Chanel and Lanvin, and I think how delicate either one is depends greatly on the materials the bag is made of--for example I have a Chanel that is deerskin and is pretty delicate. The caviar leather is much more durable. And I have a calfskin flap that is middle of the road as far as durability goes.

I'm not rough on any of my bags and I haven't used my Lanvins or any Chanel flaps as an everyday bag, but I would guess that they would hold up about the same if you are talking about similar leathers. I have noticed on some of the Chanel bags the chains that were used are much lighter weight than some others (and I avoided buying those particular bags since I was worried about durability). All of the Lanvin's I've seen have similar chains. I haven't seen any that seemed less sturdy.

Maybe someone who owns a quilted calfskin Happy can tell you more about the durability of that particular bag. Good luck with your decision.

Thank you for the comments, La Comtesse! I think I need to take another look at both bags and decide which will work best for my particular lifestyle. A caviar Chanel flap would be timeless, but there's just something about the Lanvin bags that I really like.

if you look on PurseBlog.com and do a search on Lanvin they discuss the Amalia bags and have some comments about whether Lanvin resembles Chanel too closeley. As they say, everyone can't be accused of stealing Chanel's aesthetic whenever they use chains or quilting.

I LOVE my Amalia bag and my mini-pop and would love to own a Happy bag too. I think they are a little hipper without being trendy, and the Chanel is a beautiful classic. As you said, figure out what works best for your lifestyle.

I'm really into the Lanvin bags now too. And I love the Happy. Even though to some the Chanel flaps and the Happy have very similar features, I think of them as two very different bags. You could always get one now, and the other later. :D And if you don't like too much repetition in your collection, maybe you could opt for an unquilted version of the Happy. ;)

As alisonanna pointed out, they featured a lot of the Lanvin bags on the purse blog. You may want to check out the different styles, if you haven't already.

One thing to keep in mind though is that if you love a particular style of the Happy, they may not bring that style back every season. You may want to check into that. I like some of the versions from past seasons, and they don't seem to be available now.

Good to know! I really like a snake-embossed version that's out right now as well as the quilted.

Thanks everyone for the comments. My instinct when I first saw the Happy was just as you said, alisonanna, hipper without being trendy.

A friend recently purchased a beautiful Lanvin tote, and after inspecting it (we're close friends ;)), I noticed the label inside didn't have "Made in Italy" under the Lanvin logo. Since I recently had read about Givenchy and Prada having somewhat hidden labels showing where their bags were made, I began to look further into this tote. I eventually found the "made in" tag in the zippered compartment on a small piece of black leather (making it difficult to read against the black Lanvin lining). But the bag was made in Spain. I also noticed that Barneys had some Lanvin bag descriptions stating that the bag was made in Italy and others had no statement as to where the bag was made.

Do any other Lanvin owners have bags made in other locations than Italy? And does it affect how much you are willing to pay for the bag depending on where it was made? (My thoughts being that if it is cheaper for them to produce it somewhere else, the price should be less for the consumer). Any thoughts?

For the Amalia tote owners, do you prefer the larger or smaller size? Is the bag dressy in person or too slouchy? Like could I wear it with a suit in the fall? How does the leather hold up? I'm looking for a new fall tote bag and thinking about an Amalia in camel or red (would love taupe, but I don't think they are making that color anymore.)

Hi guys, I have a question about my lanvin happy bag that I just got. The ribbon (not the end with the bow) is loose. There is a little bit that is just out - should it be attached to something? or tucked in? I'm not sure I know how to explain it...

Yes! that is exactly what I meant. However, mine is not knotted - perhaps I should knot it?

Also I would like to ask another question. I notice there are a lot of variations between the bags (such as calfskin/buffalo etc) some have two leather handles others have only one. Are these seasonal variations or are the difference made within the same season?
