Hello, I would like to add my own experience to this discussion too!
In my family, we fit into the "middle class" status, and logically we are not used to attend rich and big parties, neither to excessively consume expensive cars or to afford designer clothes / bags. I am 27 and graduated three months ago. I have been always working hard, and earning money during my studies, and also after my graduation. Recently I wished to owe a Birkin bag, and I found that it was possible to afford it if I saved my money during the waiting period.
The first negative remark came from my mother, who said it was too expensive. But she cannot really persuade me to cancel the order. But then, at a cocktail reception with her friends, we were discussing our purchases. and I told about my Birkin-plans, without any constraints, but received some weird feedback. They said that hermès bags were too expensive and that I could owe other nice bags, less than the 1/2 price. Also, they said that I did not yet have the status to owe any. and this really was too rude for me, as I work hard, graduated, and would spend my own money and not anyone else's money etc. And for me it's not to show any status or whatever. Neither to throw money out of the window to tell anyone I am rich...
Honestly, I cannot really say that your status has to match your hermès purchases... if you can afford it, and you have great taste, and should go for it. why do they always have to make rude comments?
Anyone wants to add his own opinion to this?
