Sometimes you can get a compliment with a semi-mean comment attached Several years ago i was visiting my mom in FL and since she had no internet, we stopped at a Starbucks so I could check my email. I was carrying my orange Kelly and set it on top of the table as we were having our coffee. A total stranger came up to me, complimented the bag and color and asked it was "real" and then stated that she watched Real Housewives of NYC and learned the price of a Birkin from the show and would never pay that herself and thought it was stupid to do so. I smiled, said my bag wasn't a Birkin and then said "have a nice day." What can you do?

Wow. Who comes up to someone and berates their handbag? I hope that person felt ridiculous when she left your table.

I only have two pieces of hermes, a clic h and a twilly that I saved all my babysitting money for! Im very young but worked SO hard for these pieces...Anyways today I was wearing my blue electrique clic h when some girl was like "ewww that bracelet is so ugly! what does the 'h' stand for? hideous?" her posse snickered. Granted this girl knows very well about designers as well...I just stood there wanting to cry or scream at her...she was so loud and obnoxious..I don't understand why people are so mean!:shucks:

The only thing I will tell you-you have an exquisite taste an it's a rare gift. Doesn't matter what whoever think or say (and that girl is just jealous), as long as you are happy with your clic clac, this is all that matters.

Also, whenever someone starts criticizing your things-just say-"I like it, you don't have to." Works 100% all the time.

Never. But I also don't discuss my purchases with anyone. I buy for myself, and I can afford it, so it's not a big deal to me. Everyone has their "thing". They may not spend on H, but they will splurge on something they enjoy. So I care less about what "haters" say.

Hello, I would like to add my own experience to this discussion too!

In my family, we fit into the "middle class" status, and logically we are not used to attend rich and big parties, neither to excessively consume expensive cars or to afford designer clothes / bags. I am 27 and graduated three months ago. I have been always working hard, and earning money during my studies, and also after my graduation. Recently I wished to owe a Birkin bag, and I found that it was possible to afford it if I saved my money during the waiting period.

The first negative remark came from my mother, who said it was too expensive. But she cannot really persuade me to cancel the order. But then, at a cocktail reception with her friends, we were discussing our purchases. and I told about my Birkin-plans, without any constraints, but received some weird feedback. They said that hermès bags were too expensive and that I could owe other nice bags, less than the 1/2 price. Also, they said that I did not yet have the status to owe any. and this really was too rude for me, as I work hard, graduated, and would spend my own money and not anyone else's money etc. And for me it's not to show any status or whatever. Neither to throw money out of the window to tell anyone I am rich...
Honestly, I cannot really say that your status has to match your hermès purchases... if you can afford it, and you have great taste, and should go for it. why do they always have to make rude comments?
Anyone wants to add his own opinion to this?

I think you're kidding yourself when you say it's not to show your success/status. If not, why on earth would you talk about it to your mother's friends when you already know their opinion. If it were just about your taste, you would buy it and use it for times when you're not with your family and their friends. Hermes bags ARE enormously expensive! Do you own a car? An apartment? If not, you would be much better served by acquiring those before you start on Hermes.

When we acquire the trappings of the very rich and we're not, it will put a distance between us and friends and family. And what about boyfriends? Will you be seen by them as high-maintenance? I can promise you that it won't attract wealthy friends and boyfriends, but it can lose what you already have. When you get older and have achieved success in your field, you can do as you wish to some degree. But even then, one must be careful not to court envy in the work place.

i think it's sad that some people make judgements of others based on the bags they carry. i wouldn't talk about bags to anyone but my DH who understands it cos it's obvious how negative some people are.

but i still say if that's the bag you want, go for it! no one should tell you how to spend your hard earned $$ :)

With all due respect, this is your opinion. Owning a car or an apartment is not a prerequisite to carrying a Hermes bag. Cars and apartments don't fit into everyone's lifestyles. (actually I'm a bit offended by your comment ;) )

Wise words! I love Hermes and own a couple of little things, but I NEVER discuss purchases with anyone except my husband and tpf.;) I certainly just buy them because I am mesmerised by the design and finish rather than to show my non existent wealth. In fact sometimes I am very judgemental of anyone carrying Hermes in an exurb ant way. Ie open Birkin held chest high like a shield with stamp in full view, accessorised with h belt and other bits and bobs. I see this look on some women charging through Harrods and it makes me shudder. Sometimes the Birkin isn't even real....

Agreed and well said! Ones personal business is their business. I choose to spend my money how I wish and frankly do not care what others think or how they choose to spend their money. It's none of my concern. I own Hermes pieces as I appreciate the brand, craftsmanship, and the historical lineage to the equine world.

People can be very negative, as you mentioned, so I do not discuss my pieces with others on a one to one basis either. If someone pays me a compliment, I politely thank them and move on.

+1. I don't judge anyone by the way they spend their money. It's their business. Some people buy expensive cars and I am simply not interested in cars. Does that mean I get to judge whether or not they should buy one? No.

Agreed. (I still can't figure out how to multi-quote :p)

This is presumptuous, IMHO. Perhaps the OP was merely excited about the prospect of saving for a bag she really wants.

Well, it is true that birkin bag is linked to high status symbol. Just like when you drive a nice car, people will immediately have the impression that you come from money.
However, not all people buy birkin to show their status or to make themselves look wealthy. Some people like the design and some like the quality.
Thus, it is not fair to say that all those who buy expensive birkin bag want to show off their status.
She just graduated and she has been working hard and use her money. It is ultimately her decision. She can get whatever she wants as it is her money. I think she deserves a treat for working so hard

thanks and i agree. it's not my concern how others spend their $.
but i must say i find it strange to see a couple of not-so-nice comments particularly in this thread, the irony of it makes me  maybe i thought TPF members all share the same passion for bags, that's why we are here :p
