Back in the 90's when I was a freelance photographic stylist I was working on a very commercial (ie:not creative) project in Manchester for 3 weeks and hating every moment of it-towards the end of the project I slipped out of the studio to 'get lunch' and found myself in the Hermes store.
I REALLY REALLY needed to treat myself to something as a reward for getting through that job without having a breakdown.
I spotted a black box CDC silver HW and brought it for the princely sum (in those days..) of £370.
(Looking back at the prices then I feel like blasting out the Cher hit 'If i could turn back time"..)
But anyway..back i went to the studio with my H carrier bag containing the bracelet and of course the (not terribly nice) women who were my clients asked "oooh! did you buy something?! At Hermes!!! what did you get?"
I opened the box full of joy and excitement and one asked the price..I told them still happy and excited by my purchase.
one of them screwed her face up and said it looked like something from the heavy metal clothing store in the nearby market (she had a point) and another woman told me i "obviously had money to burn"..
They went on about the bracelet for the duration of the shoot as I wore it every day.. sneering and saying things like "oh you've got your Hermes bracelet on again" and telling anyone who was there for the day how much it cost.
Its now 2022 I still own and love and wear the bracelet..Which I'm sure cant be said of their cheap 'Elizabeth Duke' jewellery and Fake Chanel bags they purchased in Turkey.

I guess I am very lucky (like @336 until yesterday) that no one has ever been snarky. My friends don’t really know or care. Since retirement, DH has bought me premier designer RTW and H, but I went for decades buying my own stuff, so I would have a real issue with anyone ‘allowing’ me to do anything lol. I started with RTW stuff from my mom, grandmother, or aunts, and went from there. And, no one MIL, mom, aunts, cousins, friends, and my cleaning woman would think of being snarky when I now gift them with bags, shawls, rtw, stuff that is either new or that I no longer use.

Ladies,
I haven't experienced any nasty comment since a long time.
But I have an excellent answer I gave to my boss, who once sincerely complimented my Jumping boots (and she knows her H, like she knows what my Victoria is).
As we share the same sense of humour, I answered:
"Thank you, company XXX gifted them to me"
Which, in our professional context, meant the gift made me grant them a huge controversed contract, haha...
Hope this may inspire you !

Yes quite remarkable how your critics can come round to your & DH’s opinions when they get gifted into the club!

Hilarious if you stop long enough to think!
