This is what we did with my e-ring. I sent a bunch of options and he chose the one he wanted to buy/have me wear for the rest of my life. He knew each piece suited my taste, but he had the final decision and it was still a surprise. As I previously posted in this thread, I do find how others (not on TPF but in the real world) are looked down upon for buying their own jewelry ridiculous. It is an old fashioned way of thinking, but that is just my opinion and we are all entitled to our own opinions. Most of my pieces I buy with my own money on my own and I kind of like that because I can pick out exactly what I want, and it feels really nice to know that I worked for the piece. But on one or two major holidays a year, I do receive jewelry gifts from SO but he usually gives me a price range and then I go out and find jewelry I like within that price range, and send him a few options that he can pick one thing from. (This was actually his idea, to have me hand select my choices and let him do a surprise pick of the final one he decides upon rather than a total surprise. For example, I might show him three different pieces from the same vendor within that price range, and he will pick one of those out and give it to me to open. I feel like he prefers this method, as it is a lot of stress for him to try and find a random piece of jewelry that I am going to like.)
That is also fine by me, because while I feel like I would like anything that he bought me because of sentimental reasons, there are simply things with jewelry that will make me really love the piece even more. Like I really love round cut diamonds, I'm not really fond of princess cut diamonds at all. I definitely prefer YG over WG, don't really like white gold for some odd reason. (You've got men who are clueless about jewelry, as well, and they find shopping for this stuff very tedious and stressful.) This way it ensures we are getting and giving things that we really like, and I don't feel bad about it because like I said, he would rather it this way because of the stress and the options that I pick are within a price range that he makes up in his head and gives to me. Usually my much more expensive pieces (2k and up) I buy on my own because we have two different kinds of jobs right now and I don't have any bills to pay or debt and he does pay for a ton. So it's the best of both worlds.
Wait a minute, there are people in the real world who think that buying your own jewelry is...is...not NORMAL? Wow. I learn something new every day.I am in northeastern PA. Now i am not in the more city like direction (which would be like king of prussia/philadelphia/allentown) and i am not in the country either (no bloomsburg, no lancaster etc.) but i live in a middle class suburb. Resteraunts and stores everywhere even right down the road from me, but most places aside from apartment buildings have green grass and a yard.
I do have much older elderly relatives who still have this mindset that jewelry must be a gift. Now my mom and aunts totally get it. But my great grandmother always scoffed upon it, as well as my grandfather's soon to be wife.
I prefer picking out and buying my own jewelry AND my own car! If it's for a special occasion, I just hand over the bill..............All the time. DH's isn't really a fan and he has very different taste than me. His good taste is in cars [emoji6], I'll let him buy me those.
