Is the Hermes "Birkin" worth the money and the wait? Is it obtainable?

I really do like the quality of their purses. If you really think about it, say on average a birkin in regular leather is about $7000, divided by 18 hours on manual labor to produce, that equates to an average of $388 per hour; versus, say a another maker of high quality leather bags that are machine sewn...say Chanel...it averages $2000 per bag, but it only took 1 hours to produce...that's $2000 per hour.

It's the initial sticker price that is shocking. I rather have an Hermes and forgoe buying other a bunch of other brands for a period of time, which would have totalled to be more that $7000 at $1500-$2000 a pop.

Well said:tup:! But I must say that as much as the quality and labour should be taken into consideration there are other factors that cause such hype about this bag.....Marketing is a huge part of all this. If they produced more bags, it would bring down the cost and therefore, it would be easier to attain and then more people would be able to afford it. Therefore, the hype wouldn't exist along with the waiting list and wouldn't be so desirable to some people.

Now, having said all this, I STILL want one:p. I still think it is an investment and a classic bag that will carry you from your 20s and 30s into your 50s and so on.... That's my two cents .

I'm not a Hermes expert but I believe that their bags are handmade and all come from the workshop in Paris that produces 5 bags per week for the whole world! (Hence the long waits and $$$!)

I would challenge that information. If the Paris workshops would only turn out 5 bags per week, the company would be broke. That would mean they only have 2 craftsmen.

While I think that the bags are worth the wait and the price and I don't want to carry anything else ever, I have to point out that at the end of the day it's just a bag. A wonderful, super duper bag that makes you feel like a million dollars, but it's just a bag. I understand the desire to own one but it's not worth going into debt for. It's an accessory, that's all.

IMO: 2 words: HELL YES!!

The style of the bag transcends time and age barriers. And...as far as resale value is concerned-refer to ebay. There are reputable sellers that are sure to be making a small fortune on their H collections.

FMP, the Birkin is worth the wait. The craftmanship is impeccable. I have different true designer brand bags and Hermes quality tops them all. I consider myself a purse enthusiast so I will continue to purchase other handbags of different fashion houses. Each bag serving a specific duty. Two to three H bags will probably quench my thirst for a lifetime. I believe if you can go for it, do so. You won't regret it.

IMO, also yes, most definitely. I LOVE bags (unsure why, just quite shallow, I guess!) and have had all sorts over the last 10 years or so since my addiction began - Gucci, Prada, Chloe, Mulberry, Miu Miu, Balenciaga, Bottega Veneta, Chanel (second favourite) and, of course, Hermes. I have a Birkin and a Kelly. No matter the pull of the latest addiciton, I return time and again to my Birkin. It's gorgeous, practical, built to last for many years, looks better as it ages and makes me feel great to use it! Also, Hermes service is excellent. I had to get some stitching redone, my bag went on holiday to Paris for 6 weeks for that purpose and came back looking better than ever with no charge.

GET ONE!

i use to debate this question before i got my first Birkin too. its pretty common and understandable why people would question the money value of a birkin. 7-8k is not a small amount and you can get a car with this amount. Though I must say that after i have now owned a birkin i completely understand what all the fuss is about. Handbags are the ultimate toys for women and we use them everyday. We should definitely use only the best in quality. I love the quality of H and I love the low key beauty of the birkin. Now I regret not getting into the bag sooner. I should have started my collection of birkins years ago instead of wasting money on other brands. If only i had been smart back in the days...now i would have at least 10 birkins! *sigh*

So true. I too wished that I'd gotten in Hermes years ago instead of wasting money on various brands which I'm not quite fond of anymore. Except for a few exceptions of limited edition things here and there, or really iconic designs.

With my kelly and birkin, I can really see myself wearing them for a long time, and if requested, passing them on to my daughters or even grand daughters.

These handbags are like the ultimate toys for women. I've been approached by various women appreciating and admiring my handbags whether they were Hermes fans or not.

Of course, I would never go overboard and purchase things I cannot afford after all these are luxury items, not what I would call investment items: stock/ bonds/ real estate...etc. I'm on a purse ban this year, unless my SA calls me with my dream croc kelly. Then I'm all done. Really done.

So to answer your original questions. Is it worth it? Yes. it is to me. I grew over time to appreciate it. If you had asked me the question 5 years ago, I would have said no. I was too young to appreciate it.

I second that! Each day I come to love and appreciate Hermes more and more. I'm at the point now where other bags don't even excite me anymore. It is all about Hermes bags for me. The quality is just...:girlsigh:.

Everyday I still kick myself in the butt for not buying the birkin that was offered to me when I was fresh out of college and working at my first job. I thought $4k was way too much for a bag, and if it were $2k it would be do-able. Whatever was I thinking???

hi everyone! *waving* i don't have a birkin yet, but i'm determined to get one asap! however it seems like everyone's debating whether or not birkins are worth getting, but nobody has laid out the logistics to actually order one.

if someone wouldn't mind explaining what the process is for special-ordering, that would be much appreciated! i'm really really coveting an exotic skin, so if that process is different, that would be great to know as well! :flowers::winkiss:

TIA, and sincere apologies if this isn't the right place to be posting - search function's broken and i've spent 2 hours digging thru the threads already

ps - if it helps, i live in SF, but i don't mind flying to vegas or LA, and i'll be visiting manhattan in june (but last time i visited nyc hermes, they were pretty mean to me so i'd rather not go back there if i can avoid it :sweatdrop:)
