Is the Hermes "Birkin" worth the money and the wait? Is it obtainable?

GF/all-

I own a togo Birkin but it's just a few years old. However, yesterday I received an Hermes Pan pochette in black box leather which I purchased from Luxury-Zurich. It's a g circle which I believe means it's from 1977. That's nearly 30 years old. Yet it is as beautiful and functional and classic and stylish as when it was made. How many 30 year old bags- other than H- can you say that about? The exterior looks amazing and the interior is as soft as silk. I can tell from the hardware that it was used by the prior owner and not just stored away. It doesn't need it at the moment, but during the next 30 years of use I can bring it to H to have the leather reconditioned. Imagine buying any other bag and asking to have it serviced (by a craftsperson who knows and understands its needs) 40 or 50 years after it was first purchased. Yes H bags are over the top expensive but these are bags for a lifetime.

^This says it all!

I sooo wish this one day will come for me!! I have adored and drooled over all your bags...now, I just have to save up and hopefully when I am ready, I am lucky to covet one of these beautiful Birkins!

Can one get Birkins easily in Paris???
How abt other part of europe??
No way I can get 1 here (in my country)...got to be on a long waiting list..

U see the problem I would like to "feel" & see the product in person b4 making a purchase..guess kind of of difficult ....

so if I can fly to Paris..that doesn't guarantee me a Birkin bag of my choice of 35 cm ...Black rite???

Maybe I shld simply give up the idea of buying 1..??

From what I read on tpf it appears to be much easier to get a Birkin in Paris. Sometimes people luck out on the first try and sometimes they go to the store everyday until they get one. The prices are better there too.
With Hermes, there is no guarantee (but that is true with everything in life I think...)
If you really want one, don't give up.

I think all H bags with the exception of maybe the exotics are
obtainable. I dislike reading articles where the journalists make it seem
like only a celebrity can carry a Birkin (Kelly, Bolide, etc.)--as this
forum proves that's not true. As long as you aren't going into debt
to acquire your bag, you can certainly obtain one. It might take
some longer than others, but if you are determined to own one,
you can. And some women are very lucky to have received H bags as gifts
from their significant others.
I've wanted a Birkin for a very long time, but after seeing the gorgeous pics of the Bolide here on the forum, I might go that route
first. The fact that you can have a bag serviced decades
later proves that is worth the money to me. And how many
handbags can you pass down to the next generation?
H bags are well made and timeless. You can't go wrong
with one of their bags. It will last a lifetime.

This is what I know about the Birkin:
1. That it may be the best bag purchase because it implies the greatest status.
2. It is timeless.
3. It is very very expensive. It costs $5,000 for leather and if you want crocodile, that'll set you back about $19K.
4. It is hard to get a hold of, waitlists etc. If you want to buy an Hermes Kelly back you will have to join a waiting list for up to a year.
5. All the "it" people have one or more.
6. Hermes is reputed for naming their Kelly Bag after Grace Kelly. The bigger version is called the Birkin.

Am I right? Is it really timeless? Does anyone know how expensive the least pricey Birkin is? How long is the waitlist? Is it more worthwhile to save your money towards one birkin than spend money on fads that pass through the years? Any information appreciated.

I just bought a "basic" Birkin a few weeks ago. It was $7400. It was a 35cm. I am not sure if the 30cm is less or not. As for the question about saving to buy a Birkin or any other investment Hermes bag, instead of spending money on the "it" bags, that is a purely personal decision. I think on this forum, most people would answer YES.

I beg to differ - I think H bags last more than just one lifetime. It will still last through your daughters and their daughters' lifetimes too

Yes, the birkin is worth both the wait & cost. It's very much obtainable, regardless of size and leather. The only caveat is whether the chosen color/leather combo is still in production.

pyrexia--True. ;) Another reason why you can't go wrong with
a H bag. I did mention the next generation, but with great care
even your daughter's daughter can enjoy your H bag.

hermes_lemming--I'm having trouble editing my post. I was trying
to say that it might be easier for some (such as myself)
to purchase a non-exotic bag first since the exotics run a bit more.
But of course, anything is obtainable.

It is indeed nice to read the replies...from u gals... thk
In fact..just sms my brother in switzerland to check out the Birkin 35 black....in Paris...

In btw...which type of leather is "easier" to maintain?? so that I can inform my brother...I left out the leather part...it is clemence??? Thks in adv.

Hi everyone ... :smile1:

I just got a JPG KP (my 1st ever Hermes) and I am already thinking if I should get another one in other colour. I have to control myself really hard to save up for a birkin instead !!!

Anyway, I am not sure which thread I should post this, I hope it is okay to post it here, but since I am new to H, I would like to know more on H re-sale values.

I have heard some stories on H owners who re-sold their bags for a very good price (There is even 1 stylist featured in our local magazine who has so far owned 3 H bags and sold them later on with profits). I am not saying buying H is for earning profits, but I am really glad at last to find a good handbag brand really worth investing in. Unlike some other designer brands that chopped the value of your bag in half the second you carry it :hysteric:

What's the story behind Hermes that makes it way more expensive than other brands? I admit they look so classic and simple, but give me a reason to justify the $$$$ they ask for:p

Now I see the benefit of being a star....you can feel free to let your Hermes bag lay on the ground without worrying about it:amuse:

I'm not a Hermes expert but I believe that their bags are handmade and all come from the workshop in Paris that produces 5 bags per week for the whole world! (Hence the long waits and $$$!)

I am 45 years old and I hope to own a Kelly and or a Birkin by the time I turn 50. So I have a little box that I just pop money in from time to time. I will probably have to buy used as I don't want to buy things from Hermes that I do not want, simply to establish a relationship with a SA. I already have about 9 Hermes scarves, a scarf ring and a Hermes watch so I am not really looking for much more smaller things. The store in Sydney is quite small and I am sure that there are many VIP's so I wouldn't have any chance to order one. So I will just drool away at all the gorgeous pics on the H forum until my dream comes true.
